For the first time in history a Fayette County tennis team brought home the state championship.

The Starr’s Mill girls tennis team crushed Marist’s shot at a 13th consecutive state title in the Class AAAA state finals to win the championship.

In the semifinals, Starr’s Mill took out St. Pius to move on to the final round. County rivals McIntosh fell to Marist in the semis paving the way for a Starr’s Mill - Marist match in the finals.

Number 1 singles player and freshman Kourtney Kowal defeated Laura Patillo 6-0, 6-1, while juniors Jessica Lange(singles#2) defeated Alyssa Gale 6-0, 6-1 and Caroline Smith(singles#3) defeated Jenna Jackson 6-2, 6-2.

The number one doubles team of senior Lindsay Dillon and junior Adriana Acuna and the number two doubles team of senior Faith Hall and sophomore Danielle Davison were still on court battling when the three singles positions clinched the title for Starr’s Mill.

The team is coached by Lee Aversano.

Other team members that brought the team to the states include: Jamie Green, Haley Staples, Ali Noltimier, Mary McRae, Morgan Myers, Kimmie Miller, Alden Treadway, Becca Ritchie, Krista Ritchie.

The Starr's Mill girls' tennis team won with class... no article can really exemplify either the passion these girls have for the game of tennis or the camraderie they share with one another. Even without a state title, they would have been champions in my eyes...

Fayette County is officially on the tennis radar screen... Now, let's get some tennis courts built at all Fayette County Schools!
