Tale of Two Libraries

Xaymaca's picture

With the groundbreaking of the new library in Tyrone I thought this might be a good time to vent about library in Fayetteville vs the one in Peachtree City. Now I realize that the Peachtree City branch is newer and that is fine but there are a few other differences that really annoy me.
1. Free Wireless Internet: PTC has it and F'ville does not. As a telecommuter it would be nice to be able to work somewhere wirelessly besides McDonanld's or Starbuck's
2. Sunday hours. Fayetteville branch closed, Peachtree City open 1 –5 p.m.

Does anyone care to start a list of local and National Wi-Fi hot-spots?

I use a Verizon Card and my treo as a modem when need be but it's not as fast as most wi-fi spots.

It's pretty amazing how many unsecured WiFi's are up and running just around the cart paths in town.

Fayetteville is not even on the list. Smiling
Hey my WIFI at home is pretty much wide open if people feel like parking in my driveway. LOL.

Obviously, Fayetteville did not. Wouldn't bother me if only PTC residents had WiFi access at PTC hot spots.

Wifi is also available at other areas in PTC, due to the City taxpayers PAYING to have it set up. It doesn't come free.

I wonder how much Peachtree City is paying to provide the service?
It would be kind of nice to have that as part of the "revitalized" Fayetteville Downtown Square district, provided there was a place to sit around there. Or maybe the old train station? But, at the very least having it in the Fayetteville Library would be a huge boost.

But it was set up at the Library/City Hall, Kedron Field House and the Baseball Soccer Complex on 74. Not sure of the ongoing costs. I know the Library/City Hall and Kedron are currently up and running.

I would assume like most technology pieces, this price will continue to come down. Especially the equipment need for initial setup.

10-12k seems a little high nowadays. I know that Gwinnett has been
talking about a WIFI and I found this article that talks about their initiative and it includes a link to their RFP:

The only problem is, Dawg, most places set up Wifi to make money. As aircards become less expensive, the cost to set up and maintain a Wifi hotspot goes up and the income comes down. So, unless those places buy cheap equipment (not a good idea when you're talking about information technology), it is fairly likely that they will not recoup their costs.

I know the city is not in it to make a profit.

I know one thing, I had a wireless router give up the ghost recently, and the one I replaced it with had more features and cost substantially less than the first one I bought 2 years ago. Well under half the amount. Both were Lynksys products.

It has always griped me that city and county services do not have hours convenient for working taxpayers.

Fayetteville City Hall is open from 7:30 a.m. till 6:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday to make it easier for working people.

Many, if not most, go to work too early to get there at 7:30 in the morning. One is lucky to get homein time to be there before 6:00 (I said before 6:00, since no one will stay after six if you get there at six.
If one tries at lunch time, most are gone to lunch, when you lunch!
Staggering shifts into the late evening would not be difficult.
What is the matter with Saturday? Workers take turns working, take another day off.

Is open late on Tues. You can get a driver's lic. on Sat or on-line. The Kroger deal was good but they did seem to have some free time.
