Standing room crowd at PTC Council for annex voteThu, 05/03/2007 - 6:05pm
By: John Munford
Perhaps the headline “annexation showdown” in Wednesday’s edition of The Citizen was appropriate. As tonight’s Peachtree City Council meeting was gaveled to order, just about every seat was full and some chose to stand in the back of the room. Most, if not all of them, are likely here to witness the discussion and council vote on whether or not to annex two new subdivisions that would add nearly 1,200 homes into the Peachtree City limits. It is expected that citizens will speak both in favor and against both annexations. The pro-annexation crowd in particular favors the subdivisions because the two developers have pledged to extend MacDuff Parkway from its current terminus northward to Old Senoia Road and onward to Ga. Highway 74 north. The road would involve a bridge over the CSX railroad tracks and it would link up with Hwy. 74 at the traffic light already in place for the northern leg of Kedron Drive. Opponents of the annexation have complained that the subdivisions would put a strain on city services including public safety. Opponents have also pointed out that the developers' proposal would call for far more homes than currently allowed under the county's zoning designations. login to post comments |
