Two students at McIntosh High School have been charged with drug distribution on campus after a teacher found “an apparent drug transaction” in a school bathroom last week, police said.

The police investigation stemming from the April 23 incident turned up information that six students were “holding” prescription pills for other students, police said. So far, police have charged two different male students for distributing the drugs, one of which was Xanax, according to Police Chief James Murray.

Both students who face charges are 15 and thus their names are not being released because they are considered juveniles under Georgia law.

One of the students is charged with two counts of distributing a controlled substance on a school campus, two counts of possession of a non-controlled substance and one count of failure to keep prescription drugs in their original container, police said.

The second student was charged with one count of distributing an imitation controlled substance on a school campus and three counts of failure to keep prescription drugs in their original container, police said.

All eight students involved are sophomores at McIntosh and will face a disciplinary tribunal hearing unless they decide to waive it and accept the school system’s recommended punishment instead, according to a school spokesperson.

Police said when the teacher walked in the restroom, one of the students was “consuming what appeared to be a controlled substance.”

According to a report from the U.S. Department of Justice, Xanax slows down brain activity resulting in a drowsy or calming effect, but it can cause seizures, respiratory depression and an increased heart rate.

Murray lauded teachers like the one who discovered the transaction because they are willing to go into areas where students feel they can safely hide drug deals.

Murray added that in addition to being illegal, the consumption of prescription drugs can be deadly, particularly if taken by someone with a heart defect.

Cpl. K. Doyle, the resource officer at McIntosh, has conducted a thorough investigation on the matter that is still ongoing, Murray said. That means it’s possible that more charges will be filed in the case, the chief added. “It sends a message to other students that this activity is not going to be tolerated,” Murray said.

Murray suggests that parents should make sure they secure their prescription medication so no one else can get ahold of the drugs.

School officials have told police that the students involved in the incident are subject to school disciplinary procedures.

Anyone have any information on just who our little druggies are? Or, would hurt their self-esteem for the community to know? You know, we used to call that 'shame'.

You better get serious about drugs folks- and you better start with your own medicine cabinet.

This is an alarming trend that has exploded in our county over the years. It has been a known fact that all of the HS's here in the county have a drug problem, but we dont want to admit it because it may hurt our standings in the GA rankings. Also, the type of drugs available vary from school to school, this is mainly demographically based. At Starr's Mill and Whitewater it is one drug more than the other, and at FCHS it's a totally different drug. I strongly urge all of you to ask the principal of your childs school to allow walk through searches using a drug dog!! We can't just search the school without the prinicpals consent, unless we have direct evidence.

Someone, please explain why "school officials have told police that the students involved in the incident are subject to school disciplinary procedures." Does the school take jurisdiction over the local police and judicial system? Does the school have a jail? Why does the school get involved in determining punishment for illegal activity? Why do they have a disciplinary tribunal hearing?

I don't have children in the public school system, so this is confusing to me. I say, let the real police and courts sort this out.

all they will get from the court side of things is probation. The school needs to expel these kids from school and keep them away from the kids that are there to get an education not high. They need to give these kids a harder more swift kick in the behind then the courts are willing to do. That is why they have a disciplinary tribunal.

These same parents probably called the school to complain about their "angels" being picked on. I doubt seriously that the parents or the kids will get a clue or a "message" from this. I'm sure the "punishment" will be minimal.

Again F- to the parents.

No they won't receive that message as stated above. Most teeagers still don't make the connection. Just like when parents talk until they are blue in the face and the teenager still goes out and does the very thing or something similar to what the parent has been preaching about time and time again. If they do not skin their knees personaly, it doesn't matter the kid next to them did. Remember, they all theink it will never happen to them.

I have children. Yes, I talk to I am BLUE in the face but until someone is caught, no one understands. It could be a child doing/selling drugs, he/she will not worry until someone gets caught. Ok, maybe a child who is thinking about it, arrest someone WHO is doing it will be a good wake up call.

You guys, I have children, I can't say that I "never inhaled - I really didn't - but I did DRING my share of beer", but at sometime drugs/smokes/drinks will be offered to my children. I pray that my children make that right choice. If they don't (as most of us didn't as teenagers/college students). I will be the parent that picks up my child with no questions asked. I just don't like drugs (etc.) being advertised at High School. I think the ones caught should be EXPELLED FOREVER.
