ARE THERE NO SACRED COWS?

Having read through the comments/blogs over the past year, I conclude that what was perhaps in a simpler time things one simply did not question without reason and the facts to substantiate. Although quite entertaining, when one from either political side challenges another, have we all lowered ourselves to name calling and accusation slinging. We have begun to display military medals to cloak our insecurity, change our names to protect our thin skins, and then demand apologies or censorship. Can we not just state our opinions and be done with it?
This site can be so much more should we be the adults we pretend to be. Post dialog, point then counterpoint. Surely, we would all say on this site nothing we would not say face to face. Or am I mistaken?

"Surely, we would all say on this site nothing we would not say face to face."

Double negatives ("nothing" & "not") cancel each other out.

So, did you mean, "Surely, we would all say on this site whatever we would say face to face"? Smiling

And that is the point, isn't it?

Being able to look someone in the eye, the window to the soul, with a clear conscience.

Using "reason and the facts to substantiate" without name-calling is the moral high ground, but there are some who, by their very philosophy of life, refuse to distinguish between high and low. They demand ethics of others, but do not dare use the same level to evaluate them. They are their own standard, and that standard changes according to the whim of the moment.

Thanks for the reminder.

Mike, you’ll have to excuse the piling on. It was a slow night. Although if Denise is anything like my wife, a bottle of good wine and a discussion on the finer points of grammar is a pretty fun way to spend a Saturday evening. Throw in a rousing game of scrabble and, well, you get the picture.

Are you implying that I'm boring? Smiling

I also like discussing (debating, i.e., arguing) the finer points of literature, history, politics . . . . . .

Scrabble is a lot of fun, too!

Arguing incessantly about double negatives, or smothering the site by copying here hundreds of other people's opinions, or worrying about cats and dogs more than Darfur or Iraq, or our pitiful federal leadership, is confounding and dull.
If one says they are for something here and another disagrees, they not only disagree, they attempt to evaluate your intelligence, insult your reason for living, and pretend to be more intelligent than the writer.
When one sets rules of life and refuses to change them when they are obviously incorrect, you become polarized to the point of total failure in life. Our infestation in this country with excessive (to many) people of different colors, religions, heritages, and thought patterns, and who refuse to instantly change to our way of thinking, we are ready to destroy them, if possible.
That method used to work about 75% (with Europeans, and some Asians) but never has with African-Americans, Muslims, and many others in minority.
Either we will meet half-way or we will have chaos.
Adam and Eve, and then Noah, must have messed up!

"Arguing incessantly about double negatives" -- Gross exaggeration --

One clarifying question was asked because Maximus said, "I am having a little trouble deciphering your sentence."

"smothering the site by copying here hundreds of other people's opinions" -- As I've said before, you have the choice whether or not to read a post.

"confounding" -- Confusing or perplexing? Try re-reading and re-reading, if necessary.

If you're discombobulated, just take a deep breath and calmly re-read the posts.

If some posts confound you, do you feel self-consciously distressed or embarrassed? Try Churchill's advice that's given below.

Do the posts addle, befuddle, or bewilder you? Perhaps this is a pre-existing condition.

I don't think that the posts have put you at a loss for words. Coherency may be a bit of a problem, though.

"pretend to be more intelligent than the writer" -- Your comments speak for themselves. No pretense is needed.

"infestation" -- Curious that you use that word. Brings to mind roaches that need to be exterminated.

"insult your reason for living" -- Please cite specific examples. Perhaps the following advice will give you "a reason for living." Smiling

In my observation, the individual has reached his ceiling when he stops his self-education. The competent ones lift their ceilings day by day through self-education. Those who are “drop-outs” find their ceilings constantly getting lower. ~ Lavor K. Chaffin

Well, I tried. What I have been trying to say is that you are "preaching to the choir," not most of the folks on here.
The length, the quotations, the pretense, the assumption of ignorance of those with new thought, all tend to add to your being ignored mostly, you can continue how you write for the benefit of 2 or 3 on here if you wish. Mainly though you write for your own self gratification. Have at it.

Dollar, your ignorance is absolutely profound. Is English your second or third language? I hope your understanding of the others is a little deeper. Do you even know what the term “preaching to the choir” means? You obviously don’t so I’ll give you an example: If I told my wife that I thought people should pay more attention to their grammar and spelling on The Citizen, she might say “you’re preaching the choir”. What she means by that is that she also believes people should pay more attention to such things.

I have seen it suggested here before that you use some of your immense fortune to pay for English classes. First get your GED, and then look into the nearest community college.

Vr,
Maximus

PS I saw a sign for some free ESL (English as a Second Language) classes in front of a church on 54. Maybe that would be helpful.

You don't make any sense---I know what preaching to the choir means, and my illustration was properly used!
Denise talks to those who like extremely long treatises, many quotes, emphasis everywhere, hint of christian influence, etc., just the things she likes also. To heck with anyone else's ideas!
Always saying everything is positive, and if isn't, just think of how bad it could be, etc. Never admit that those you favor have screwed up!

$, I talk to you, & I KNOW that you don't like "extremely long treatises, many quotes, emphasis everywhere, hint of christian [sic] influence, etc."

"To **** with anyone else's ideas!" I never try to suppress your expression of ideas, nor do I tell you how to say them (length, quotes or not, topics, emphasis or not, Christian or anti-Christian, etc.).

I have to ask for clarification more often than not because, well, you are a little hard to follow.

"Always saying everything is positive" -- Thanks! I'm seldom accused of that.

"Never admit that those you favor have screwed up!" -- "Never" doesn't leave much room for your making a mistake.

Just who do I "favor"? Who do you want me to yell at?

Pleasant thoughts! Smiling

Hardly, nor anyone else on here.
My complaints: I complain about idiots, politicians, war mongers, false christians, etc., you complain about how much of a problem children are, how they ruin your meals, have an education complex,
and a better than thou attitude. You never delve into what is messing up this world for many people because in my opinion, you have yours and don't care. Call that ignorant if you wish, but I feel good about such thoughts and actions as the opposite of most of that!

Denise Conner's picture

Yes, I must say, you do complain A LOT.

You say that I "complain about how much of a problem children are, how they ruin your meals." What????

You must have me confused with someone else.

I don't complain about someone educating himself; I love to learn and respect those who use the brains that they've been given. So anything you want to tell me, I'll listen, & then I'll try to verify it because I know that you won't give the facts to back up your statements. Just one little blue link will not kill you. Smiling

"You never delve into what is messing up this world" -- I try battling Basmati. Does that count?

Just "what is messing up this world for many people"?

"you have yours" -- What does that mean exactly, & how do you know what I do or do not have? You're sounding like the all-knowing Basmati now.

"I feel good about such thoughts and actions" -- Pleasant dreams!

Critique via disjointed commentary about random sentence fragments in the previous post, coupled with random quotes that are irrelevant to the subject at hand, adds nothing to the discussion. That's my opinion.

A suggestion? Why not try using some original thought for a change? Hmmm?

Denise Conner's picture

"original thought" -- To quote someone much wiser than I, "There is nothing new under the sun."

Perhaps you should follow my advice to $, try re-reading the post.

I gave credit to the sources for the "words of wisdom" that I quoted. What was "original" was my selection and arrangement of them.

Perhaps in reading them a glimmer of light entered. As long as there's life, there's always hope.

BTW, I can read your "original" thoughts if I go to MoveOn, Arianna Huffington, or at a lot of other such sites. Your posts bear a close resemblance to the rants that I see there.

I could listen to Rosie; she's at least funny.

You truly add nothing to the debate here.

lengthy cut and paste
Irrelevant quotations
thinly veiled personal attacks
mischaracterizing the position of people you disagree with
Lots of shiny blue links.
Tangential discourses.

You seem to equate quantity of posts with quality of posts.

Both ugly little men who hate women and want to rule the world Evil

Osama & Fidel look a little alike -- same beady eyes & unkempt hairiness. Maybe they're brothers, too.

I think Fidel's on his last leg, so Bas could step right into the job. He seems to have all the qualifications -- #1 is being mean. At least he'd be out of this country.

Bas is probably seething right now. I know that I'm getting to him when he starts dictating his blogging rules to me. Laughing out loud

Polarization has destroyed debate. Now, one must agree with EVERYTHING that your voting side says, and you must fight to the death those who say otherwise.
