State still hopes for commuter bus line to serve PTC, Fayette

Could commuter bus service be in the cards for Fayette County?

During last week’s meeting of the Coweta County Commission, Georgia Regional Transportation Authority representative Jim Ritchey provided the neighboring county’s commissioners an overall view of the success of the system in Coweta.

In fact, Ritchey hopes to have another route that would run from a lot on Ga. Highway 154 near Interstate 85.

“We’d love for y’all to help us find the right location,” he said.

But Ritchey also said the system plans an expansion that would have a commuter bus system running from Peachtree City to downtown Atlanta in 2012.

“I’m an eternal optimist,” said Ritchey. He was alluding to Fayette County’s long-standing opposition to any sort of public-funded commuter bus service.

GRTA currently operates the XPress bus service in 12 counties around the Atlanta region. Xpress uses 57-seat coaches to provide commuters a public transportation option to downtown Atlanta and MARTA stations.

Fayette County is the closest county to Atlanta that has repeatedly refused to participate in the program.

When the program was started in Coweta County in 2005, the County Commission pledged $850,000 towards the program, and GRTA provided more than $15 million in funds to complete local road widening projects, such as Lower Fayetteville Road.

Ritchey told the County Commission that the route from Newnan to Atlanta is often full, and some days there are folks standing on the bus.

“Gov. Perdue is a big backer of the program and we hope to get some state funds to expand the program,” he said.

He also said a route is planned to start up in south Fulton later this year.

2012 before they can get buses here? That's really annoying.

Fayette county needs to get it's collective head out of it's collective rear-end on this issue!

The X-Press bus service doesn't bring in the undesirables as has been the mantra for years around here.

PTC is facing 36,000 vehicle trips on the 74 corridor up to I 85 in the next 5 years. X-Press busses won't solve the problem with commuting, but it sure as heck won't add to it.

Plant that Park & Ride in the Industrial area and charge any out-of-county users a parking fee.

If this happens our home will never be the same and we will become a haven for thugs and criminal element.Remember how nice and pristine the Old National used to be? Then came MARTA.This is Fayette's fate if any sort of public transportation comes here. We must stop this at all costs.

Hey dude, did you ever live at Embarcaderro on Sullivan?
I was gone to Chi-town after that (76 - 80). Then around '82 there was this apt in Union City. I don't think MARTA changed the 'hoods.
Mass transit doesn't bring crime & criminals to an area. I'm telling you, THEY don't ride the bus. That would be as em-bare-as-sing as a 16 y/o in PTC riding the yellow taxi.

why would this be a threat? Old National is in Fulton Co. so they always had Marta.

No they have not always had MARTA. Old National was one of the most desirable areas south of I-20.Well kept homes, great property value and virtually no crime. In comes MARTA. Property values sink like a rock, businesses board up faster than they can buy nails, apatments spring up, the school system goes down the toilet, property becomes run down and crime skyrockets! This is in direct correlation to the arrival of MARTA in the area. This is not opinion but these are the cold hard facts. I CHALLENGE ANYONE TO DISPUTE THIS.

West End in Atlanta was a desireable area. Do you know where that is?
What is your house worth now? What is your house worth now compared to one in Cabbagetown? Grant Park? What is the 5 year increase?
Read my lips....Chambers / Randolph Co's, ALA. You'll be happy or happier & maybe less afraid. Behind a fence. W/ a big dog & oh, yes a gun w/ Talon slugs.

Your argument is antecedal at best.

Statistically, you're more likely to have an accident within five miles from your home. According to your logic, people should stay at least five miles from their home to avoid accidents.

BTW, most home accidents happen in the bathroom, so according to you people should avoid that room in their house.

I may give my true ID away here.
I had to call my ins. agent once & he found out my wife was traveling 25 miles to work. My rates went up. When I called him on this, I pointed out that most accidents happen w/in 5 miles of the house and therefore I should actually see a rate decrease.
Numbers don't lie but liars can figure.

Home values have risen dramatically in MD and VA because of the METRO being extended out into the burbs.

Please show me one case where a 'thug' boarded a commuter bus with someones TV.

have risen in Grant Park but my friend who lives there takes his pistol with him when he rolls the garbage to the curb. Is that what you want here?

I can remember old national when it was a 2 lane road and the only reason marta didn't come down the road was no one lived there. so if thats what you mean you win. but the fact is what we are talking about here is you're just afraid a black person will move in beside you, do you think all blacks work in Atlanta, they don't need a bus to move here, if all the thogs and gangbangers wanted to live here thet would already be here.

That's right, when the FACTS don't support you ( which you admit) you pull out the old race card. Its been a liberal tatic for years. BTW I don't care what color person lives next to me as long as they are decent law abiding citizens. If they are not, be they black or white I don't want them here. You may be able to bully others with the race card but not me. You've been watching Rosie too much.

Marta serves all of Fulton Co. therefore old national was served by marta. Marta was created to serve Fulton, Dekalb, and Atlanta, better check your facts again. I wish you people would decide if I'm a liberal or conservative I don't know whitch side to argue. I also believe we tangled before when you said PTC was the only place left on the southside that had any class, you were wrong then and you're wrong now,by the way I'm Scots-Irish so that race card thing ain't working here.

I don't consider myself a member of either party, I beieve I'll sart my own party, the commen sense party because thats what we are sorely lacking in Washington today. Everyone's so wrapped up in their platforms they can't get anything done. I vote the person not the party.
The only reason I voted for Bush was I couldn't stand the backstabbing that Kerry had done, if he saw so many war crimes he should have reported them, I knew some officers in the Navy like that and tried my best to stay away from them as they would throw you away just to look good at something. My biggest regret about the last election was that those two were the only choices.

In the US, is someone making it home safely from work a news story, or is the fiery crash what triggers a headline? Will more feel good stories bring success on the ground in Iraq, or will it take a cessation of the very bad stories? I don't think Americans are as concerned about how many buildings we construct in Iraq, as they are in the safety of our warriors. That's just my honest opinion.

Cheers,

Kevin "Hack" King

Sadly, the media dwell on the worst -- such as what's in Anna Nicole's refrigerator. Smiling

Have you ever read How the News Makes Us Dumb: The Death of Wisdom in an Information Society? Makes you THINK! Puzzled

Safety should be priority #1. From my limited perspective, there are probably too many constraints on the soldiers since the terrorists live among decent people and it's hard to tell who the enemy is. This ends up putting soldiers much more at risk.

However, the MSM (mainstream media) focus on the negative to influence public opinion against Pres. Bush, whom they hate or at least STRONGLY dislike.

You can look at
The Corruption of the Media
at EU Referendum for some good examples of media bias.

Michelle Malkin's column Fauxtography: The Media Scandal Continues & Fauxtography at her blog Hot Air are other good examples.

BTW, I did look at the ABC News site & saw some examples of bias (as you challenged in another post).

Isn't the internet great! Smiling

If I want to sit in traffic to get to a bus, I'll drive across 34 to Newnan.
