State still hopes for commuter bus line to serve PTC, FayetteTue, 04/24/2007 - 4:24pm

Could commuter bus service be in the cards for Fayette County? During last week’s meeting of the Coweta County Commission, Georgia Regional Transportation Authority representative Jim Ritchey provided the neighboring county’s commissioners an overall view of the success of the system in Coweta. In fact, Ritchey hopes to have another route that would run from a lot on Ga. Highway 154 near Interstate 85. “We’d love for y’all to help us find the right location,” he said. But Ritchey also said the system plans an expansion that would have a commuter bus system running from Peachtree City to downtown Atlanta in 2012. “I’m an eternal optimist,” said Ritchey. He was alluding to Fayette County’s long-standing opposition to any sort of public-funded commuter bus service. GRTA currently operates the XPress bus service in 12 counties around the Atlanta region. Xpress uses 57-seat coaches to provide commuters a public transportation option to downtown Atlanta and MARTA stations. Fayette County is the closest county to Atlanta that has repeatedly refused to participate in the program. When the program was started in Coweta County in 2005, the County Commission pledged $850,000 towards the program, and GRTA provided more than $15 million in funds to complete local road widening projects, such as Lower Fayetteville Road. Ritchey told the County Commission that the route from Newnan to Atlanta is often full, and some days there are folks standing on the bus. “Gov. Perdue is a big backer of the program and we hope to get some state funds to expand the program,” he said. He also said a route is planned to start up in south Fulton later this year. login to post comments |
