It's simply amazing how Speaker Pelosi maintains her sky-high approval ratings from the general public (53% currently, far above Chimpy McFlightsuit's anemic 33% and above former Speaker Newt Gingrich's all time high of 44%!)

You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time.

Lincoln never said that

Dishonest Denise "quoting" Honest Abe...what irony! Sticking out tongue

I like this quote about Lincoln misquoting from an article in the Christianist-approved Washington Times:
"He seems to provide validation for just about anything anybody wants to have validated, and if you can't find a Lincoln quote, you make one up." LINK

ThinkExist.com, QuoteDB.com, BrainyQuote.com, Bartleby.com -- all reference the quote.

But to give credit where credit is due --

"Even a fool can have one good idea in a thousand." - Chinese proverb

"He has a right to criticize, who has a heart to help." - Abraham Lincoln

From your link to The Washington Times:

"Remarks attributed to the quotable 16th president have popped up in everything from TV commercials to speeches by famous generals, presidents and even recent war protesters."

Well, at least I'm in good company (except for the "recent war protesters")! Smiling

"The greatest president in American history, Abraham Lincoln, is credited with uttering one of the finest sayings about human nature ever expressed: "You may fool all the people some of the time; you can even fool some of the people all the time; but you cant fool all of the people all the time." Folks in Lincoln's time seemed to be experts at fooling each other, so I'm sure Abe was speaking from experience and direct observation."

Attributed to ABRAHAM LINCOLN.—Alexander K. McClure, “Abe” Lincoln’s Yarns and Stories, p. 184 (1904).

"Many quotation books have also attributed this to Lincoln, and the sources given have varied. According to Roy P. Basler, ed., The Collected Works of Abraham Lincoln, vol. 3, p. 81 (1953), 'Tradition has come to attribute to the Clinton [Illinois] speeches [September 2, 1858] one of Lincoln’s most famous utterances—"You can fool all the people some of the time and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time."' But he goes on to say that the epigram and any references to it have not been located in surviving Lincoln documents.

"This remark has also been attributed to P. T. Barnum," "an American showman who is best remembered for his entertaining hoaxes and for founding the circus that eventually became Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus."

"The Greatest Show on Earth" was "a traveling amalgamation of circus, menagerie and museum of 'freaks'"

"Often referred to as the 'Prince of Humbugs', [sic] Barnum saw nothing wrong in entertainers or vendors using hype (or 'humbug', [sic] as he termed it) in their promotional material, just as long as the public was getting good value for its money. However, he was contemptuous of those who made money through fraudulent deceptions."

In the context of Git Real's blog "Congress Gone Wild - Spring Break Congressional Style," attributing this quotation to P. T. Barnum is more appropriate.

Thank you for keeping me "honest," Basmati.

I would not want to be "specious," as you often accuse me of being.

By "specious" do you mean deceptively attractive? Evil

I'd never try to lead you, or anyone else, into error.

"You can fool some of the people all of the time, or all of the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time"

Fact: Abraham Lincoln supposedly said this in a speech in September 1858. But the words are not included in a text of the speech. The evidence appears to come from two people recalling in 1910 that he said it in 1856.

This report (your link) says that people as far back as 1910 attribute this comment to Lincoln and report he said it in 1856. It says it wasn't in his speech in September of 1858 - which was never claimed anyway - it does not say that he didn't say it, only that it didn't appear in an 1858 speech.

Before you call someone dishonest you may wish to check your own sources.

Questions for you basmati, these are the same ones I have seen others ask you that you have not answered but they will help us understand you.

Why the personal attacks on other bloggers?

Why the hate of Christian belief and behavior – if it’s not your belief, why belittle it. Do you feel that way about Muslims, Buddhists, Zionists?

Why the vehement disdain for the veterans on this site?

Why do you reject outright the established norms of society?

Why the anger toward Denise, Major and all of those who dare disagree with the great basmati?

Even better, do you believe in a supreme being?

Given the fact that man cannot create or destroy matter, where did all of this matter come from? Even the big-bang theory starts with matter of such incomprehensible density that all mater came from it. Where did that miniscule portion of infinitely dense matter come from basmati?

Help me understand you so we can stop fearing your irrational disdain and personal attacks on people, established religion and society’s norms and mores.

No scholar can find any contemporary documentation of Lincoln's "quote". This is nothing more than "Washington cannot tell a lie"-style revisionism 50 years after the fact and I stand by my characterization.

I addressed your other concerns in a blog entry.

I couldn't get the story to come up. What's the issue? And is it as bad as when Tom Delay (can't wait to hear what "The Hammer's" prison nickname is going to be) took a lobbyist-sponsored trip to play golf in Scotland and under-reported the value of the trip?

I think it got busy last night. So I gather that you also check Matt Sludge out from time to time to see what's happening. Sometimes you can find a nugget of truth there that contradicts the other news sources.

Matt Drudge seldom initiates news reports. His specialty is putting headline topics together and providing links that attract 'hits'.

His credibility has virtually nothing to do with the articles you read.

He simply provides the links to mainstream and offbeat news and blogs.

How about a rider (no pun intended)Smiling
to the next tax bill that requires all Congressmen to file coach. At least us common folk would have them as a captive audience for a few hours.

Ugh. That ain't pretty . . . especially when gas prices are skyrocketing. But it just reinforces my basic belief that we need to get regular working-class and middle-class folks in government.

As for the Sludge Report, I tend to look to Reuters and API for print news and The News Hour with Jim Lehrer (for video news). Most of their folks aren't Rupert Murdock's ho (a horrifying visual that will take years of therapy to eradicate from my brain).
