Brent Bozell has an insightful column at NewsBusters about Ms. Tucker's "prize."

"Conservatives often ponder why more young conservatives don’t go into journalism. Here’s one easy reason: the path to prizes and prestige doesn’t come from fierce investigative probing into liberal sacred cows or sharp-eyed conservative commentary. It comes from pleasing liberals with stories which advance their agenda."

"The official Pulitzer Prize Board’s press release hailed Tucker’s 'courageous, clear-headed columns that evince a strong sense of morality and persuasive knowledge of the community.' Translation: she’s liberal, and she hates George Bush."

"Any conservative student who aspires to be a Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist should really try another line of work. Here’s the list since George Will won in 1977 and William Safire won in 1978: Charles Krauthammer in 1987, Paul Gigot in 2000, and Dorothy Rabinowitz in 2001. That’s five conservatives in 30 years."

"Since 1992, eight of the sixteen Commentary prize winners have been women . . . . [Only 1 has been conservative.] But there’s been no Pulitzer for Mona Charen or Michelle Malkin or Linda Chavez or – the Pulitzer people will faint -- Ann Coulter."

"There’s never been a Pulitzer for Bill Buckley or Pat Buchanan or Cal Thomas or Robert Novak. Need we say more?"

"So when you hear a liberal-media person crow about someone’s excellent journalistic qualifications, such as their [sic] Pulitzer Prize, it’s fairly safe to assume that hallowed journalist wrote something that would make a Hillary Clinton smile from ear to ear, and would make a Rush Limbaugh grimace."

Just a few excerpts for thought! Smiling

Sounds very much like sour grapes to me!
Ann Coulter? Cal Thomas? Novak, the slasher?
We don't award Pulitzer prizes to people who think that extreme criticism and trodding down of unfortunate and ignorant people is the way to correct them!

Hey banmati: are you sure this is our local AJC? You must be referring to a different one! Not the one that ranks #6 on Bill O'Reilly's Hall of Shame: Media Outlets that Traffic in Defamation or the one Bill investigated for being so leftist. Oh wait, I forgot! There is no liberal bias in the media! Eye-wink

This is the same Bill Oreally that said AMERICANS slaughtered GERMANS at Malmaday in WWII. This is the same Bill OReally that said the 11 year old kidnap and rape victim in Missouri was "having too much fun" to want to go home. This is the Bill Oreally that tried to explain military operations in Abu Graib to the Colonel that worked...... AT ABU Graib. This is the guy who settled his sexual harrassment law suit out of court. This is the guy who was uninvited to speak at a child advocacy fundraiser because of his lack of comprehension of Stockholm syndrome. This is the guy that claimed he got a Peabody Award for a show that never got a Peabody award at a time he wasn't even there (A Current Affair). I thought all news COMMENTATORS (vs. reporters) give their opinions on news stories.

O'Reilly doesn't claim to be a reporter.

His statements should be evaluated, but so should Cynthia Tucker's.

As editorial page editor, doesn't CT have the power to censor opinions?

She is "responsible for guiding the development of the [paper's] opinion policies on everything."

PBS's Cynthia Tucker Bio

Just wondering . . . .

AMERICA'S LOVE AFFAIR WITH GUNS BREEDS BLOODY RESULTS

"Gun assaults are rising" -- I'll have to check crime statistics about that one.

"Republicans, of course, are wholly owned by the National Rifle Association, which advocates a howitzer in every home."

"a perplexing cultural ethos that worships individual gun ownership"

"unchecked personal gun ownership"

"the cult of gun ownership"

"No other country on the planet shares our fascination with guns -- not Japan, not Great Britain or France. Not India or China or Malaysia."

-- Don't think that they have our history of personal liberty either.

"[They] are not burdened with our staggering rate of casual violence."

"a rise in violence -- fueled by the gun" -- Guns are the cause of crime rather than criminals???

-- Law-abiding citizens are equivalent to criminals in her mind.

"Police attribute the increase to several factors, including an epidemic of methamphetamine, a casual acceptance of violence among a subset of aimless young men and a flood of illegal guns."

Why doesn't CT read her own column? Smiling

Note the language about guns that CT uses:

- The NRA "advocates a howitzer in every home."

- "The suicide bomb of domestic politics"

- "The cult of gun ownership"

- "So this folly will continue, fueled by a perplexing cultural ethos [mentality] that worships individual gun ownership."

- "A surfeit [a condition of going or being beyond what is needed, desired, or appropriate; glut] of guns"

- Anachronism like "cannibalism and the sacrifice of virgins"

- "Irrational gun lobby"

_______________________________

It seems that statistics reported by the Bureau of Justice (as in U.S. Dept. of Justice) don't completely agree with Cynthia Tucker's claim, "Gun assaults are rising."

"Firearm-related crime has plummeted since 1993, then slightly increased in 2005."

"After 1996, less than 10% of nonfatal violent crimes (rape and sexual assault, robbery, and aggravated assault) involved a firearm."

"Incidents involving a firearm represented 9% of the 4.7 million violent crimes of rape and sexual assault, robbery, and aggravated and simple assault in 2005."

"After peaking in 1993, the number of gun crimes reported to police declined and then stabilized at levels last seen in 1988."

Nonfatal Firearm Incidents

(1993) 1,054,820

(2004) 280,890

(2005) 419,640

_______________________________

"Gun homicides by adults 25 and older reflect a general downward trend, although they increased slightly in recent years."

"Gun homicides by persons 18-24 years old declined after the peak in 1993 but have not returned to the levels seen prior to the mid 1980's."

Homicides by Weapon Type: Handgun --

(1976) 8,651

(1993) 13,981

(2000) 7,985

(2003) 8,830

(2004) 8,299

Guns are not the problem; criminals are. To quote Cynthia Tucker,

"Police attribute the increase to several factors, including an epidemic of methamphetamine, a casual acceptance of violence among a subset of aimless young men and a flood of illegal guns."

Seems that the problem is not LEGAL guns or "gun safety," is it?

It's easier to confiscate or severely restrict legal guns than to work on solutions to a culture of "a casual acceptance of violence among a subset of aimless young men" and the meth epidemic.

Wonder if CT will look for any solutions to the real problems? Then she might deserve that Pulitzer.

And your point, sir? I never said I agree with O'Reilly on everything. In fact, I don't. I simply pointed out that the AJC is a leftest paper and is acknowledged to be by a major TV news show. I noticed you neatly side-stepped the issue and instead of saying why the AJC isn't a liberal paper, you instead attacked "the messenger" O'Reilly (which I agree has inconsistent opinions/views).

Using Bill Oreally as evidence the AJC is slanted is like using Kim Jiong Ill as evidence North Korea is a just society. It's the whole credibility thing. Is he at all an objective opinion on this????

Check my post out again. I am not mad in the least. I am glad you quote Mr. drown the govt in the toilet and the luffa guy. It makes my side of the discussion much, much easier. Now, if you were to sight Pat Buchanan, I'd have a bit more work to do. I suppose the alcoholic Glenn Beck will be your next ace.

My, my, you sure don't seem to like libertarian/conservative media people do you? Again, instead of logically explaining why you disagree with them you make cheap personal attacks ("alcoholic Glenn Beck") against them. Last time I checked we ALL have made mistakes. Honestly Mr. King, I know you're better than that! Let's have a debate on the issues and leave out the personal attacks. Smiling (Of course, pointing out someone's flaws when they have a direct effect on the views expressed by the person is valid -- i.e. if Beck was saying that getting drunk was wrong and then did it.)

I stopped reading the AJC years ago but must issue my congrats to both Tucker and Klibanoff for the recognition in their chosen field of endeavor.
