A 14-year-old Peachtree City resident ran a golf cart into a parked SUV Thanksgiving night and had to be taken to the hospital, police said.

A preliminary investigation by the Peachtree City Police Department determined that the driver was going too fast when he turned off North Cove near Peachtree Parkway. The driver was cited for failure to maintain lane and underage operation of a golf cart, police said.

City ordinance requires children 14 and under to drive a golf cart with a parent or guardian who has a valid driver’s license.

A 15-year-old passenger in the golf cart was uninjured, police said.

Maybe we need to further widen the paths and ban all SUVs from PTC to protect our youth. Better yet, lower the golf cart driving age to 14, 13, or 12, so the poor parents won't be charged with allowing underage cart driving. I'm just glad there wasn't a pedestrian here as well. Maybe it's time to take back our paths.

(Note, this is only partial sarcasm - let the firestorm begin)

Widening the paths is needed. You just cannot pass and so on.

We sure need answers. None of which should be "lowest common denominator".

Maybe speed detectors with automantic cameras would help? But those are expensive systems.

Can you elaborate on what you are trying to say here?

Speed detectors with automatic cameras. Where would they go? What would they accomplish? Perhaps, as we do with cars, we should just ticket the driver and prosecute....oh wait, we already do that, but not nearly enough given the lack of police presence on the path system.

Making the paths wider does nothing but give you an excuse not to slow down and pay attention. One person stops, lets the other person go, and you wave and say hi. This isn't rocket science, it's courtesy. But we don't teach our children that, now do we?

"Lowest Common Denominator" - explain what this has to do with anything on the paths.

Well, the paths are supposed to be widened a bit. And two carts can pass if they SLOW DOWN (which fewer folks of any age seem to be willing to do anymore). I'm not disagreeing with you, but to widen paths, we would need to cut down trees (gasp) and add more asphalt (oh no), which is an impervious surface (alas) that will ultimately increase stormwater runoff (egads!). I think maybe we should just put the unsupervised driving age back to 16, and make the fines higher.

Many parts of the Paths do not allow for passing without one or both going off the side of the path.

This is dangerous to pedestrians when they do not hear a cart flying up on them and trying to squeeze by. Especially when raining or such.

Age controls are not going to do anything to fix those problems. Idiots are not limited to being teens, as you said.

Yea, I agree the cutting of any trees is a sad requirement. Don't like that part one bit.

And yes, the impervious area will grow. But, if it encourages more people to use the Paths that will take some auto traffic burden away and cut gas consumption.

Don't you just love complex issues?

On the enforcement issue, I have never seen a Cart with a blue light on it to give out tickets.
