Weekend entertainment options abound

Wondering what to do this weekend? Local residents will have a multitude of option to choose from for their weekend plans. Theater productions, exhibits, concerts, fund raisers and even a yard and garden show are just some of the options to be found around Fayette and Coweta counties this weekend.

Local theater productions include Newnan Theatre Company’s presentation of “Aladdin Jr.” as part of their Popcorn Series. The show, which opens this weekend, will run for seven performances only. Visit www.newnantheatre.com for more info.

The Twilight Theatre Company will kick off their second season this weekend with their production of the southern classic “Steel Magnolias.” The two act play will be performed at the Fayette Family YMCA’s Blackbox Theater.

The Georgia Youth Ballet will perform “Lily the Ladybug” on Saturday, April 14 at 2:30 p.m. at The Centre for Performing and Visual Arts in Coweta County as part of the spring recital of dancers from The Studio. Tickets will be available at the door.

The Legacy Theatre will continue their season with the southern premier of the Andrew Lloyd Webber production, “Song & Dance.” The show, which will run weekends through May 6, is told in two acts: one entirely in song and the other in dance. For those interested in giving back to the community, two fund-raising events are planned for Saturday, April 14.

A silent and live art auction, to benefit Promise Place (formerly Fayette Council on Domestic Violence) will be held at the Tyrone Depot, 847 Senoia Road, Tyrone. A preview will be held at 6:30 p.m. and the auction will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tickets, $10 per person, couples $15, can be purchased at the door. Door prizes, hors d’oeuvres and sweet treats and a limited edition print by local artist Patsy Gullett will features of the event.

The Northgate Viking Band Boosters will sponsor a benefit motorcycle bike ride beginning at 9 a.m. at J & R Clothing in Newnan. Visit www.northgateband.com for details.

Music fans have a selection of concerts to choose from including the annual Fayette County High School Select Chorus Variety Show, which will be held at Sam’s Auditorium in Fayetteville, April 13-14, at 7:30 p.m. and April 15 at 3 p.m. Tickets will be available at the door.

The Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater’s annual concert series will kick off this weekend with a two night performance from Brit-rocker Paul Rodgers. See the article in today’s paper for details.

For those with a taste for classics, a solo piano recital with former Peachtree City resident Thomas Rosenkranz will be held April 15 at 3 p.m. at St. Andrew’ in the Pines Episcopal Church, 316 N. Peachtree Park Way, Peachtree City. Works of Scriabin, Ives, Radiohead and free-form improvisations will be performed. Donations will be accepted.

The 2007 Spring Yard and Garden Show, hosted by the Peachtree City Parks and Recreation Department, will be held April 14 at Shakerag Knoll in Peachtree City from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission and parking are free, and the show will go on rain or shine.

A perfect option for families looking for a way to spend some time outdoors while increasing their knowledge, is the Commemorative Air Force Dixie Wing’s WWII Heritage Days event. Held April 14 and 15 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Falcon Field in Peachtree City, the event will feature re-enactors, vintage vehicles and aircraft, and demonstrations, including reenacted skirmishes at a “french farmhouse” and German airfield. Entertainment, food and fun are promised at this annual event. Adults $5, kids 12 and under free. The public is asked to bring a canned food item for Fayette Samaritans Food Bank. In association with the WWII Heritage Days is Keep ‘em Flying, CAF Dixie Wing’s annual WWII hangar dance. The dance will be held April 14 from 6-11:30 p.m. and will include a barbecue dinner, big band entertainment and dance demonstrations. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased by calling 678-364-1110.

Do you like to hear original music with intruments ranging from cast iron pans, to trash cans, to authentic African djembes? Do you enjoy familiar music with different arrangements? Fayette Middle School's World Percussion Ensemble will host a percussion festival Saturday, April 21. Harp's Crossing Baptist Church is the place to experience a wide variety of percussion ensembles with performances beginnning at 2 p.m. $5 per person at the door. People, let me tell you, the percussion ensemble from Fayette Middle
School is worth the $5.00, to listen to these other groups too is a bargin. Lets show some support it will well worth the time.
