All 3 victims taken by helicopter from crash site

Three people were critically injured in a crash late Wednesday afternoon at the intersection of Ga. Highway 74 and Aberdeen Parkway, police said.

Traffic on Ga. Highway 74 in the area was halted in both directions for more than a half-hour as three separate medical helicopters had to land on the road to take victims to area hospitals.

Police said the preliminary investigation of the crash scene revealed that Leonard Dunn of Fayetteville was driving north on Hwy. 74 when Melissa Painter of Fayetteville, who was traveling south on 74, turned left attempting to reach Aberdeen Parkway, causing the collision.

Painter, Dunn and a third unidentified passenger in Dunn’s vehicle were all considered to be in critical condition immediately after the accident, which was reported at 5:50 p.m., police said.

Dunn’s vehicle, an older model Porsche Targa convertible, was heavily damaged on the front end, causing the passenger compartment to collapse on the occupants of the car. Painter was driving an older model Honda Accord.

Dunn was listed in critical condition Thursday at Atlanta Medical Center, but information about Painter and the passenger in Dunn’s vehicle was unavailable at press time.

I would like to bring this situation up again and with a plea for help concerning the sentencing of Melissa Painter who survived this horrible crash.

Here is the plea:
January 25, 2008

As most of you remember, last March (2007) we were all shocked to hear of the car accident that took the lives of our own John Minaberry and friend
of many Lennie "the locksmith" Dunn. We prayed as a community for the
young mother of 3 who caused that accident. We hope you will continue to
pray for her.

Since that time, we have learned the following about Mrs. Painter:

l. At the time of the accident, she was on probation for public
drunkenness and assaulting a waitress at Loco’s restaurant in Sept. 2006.

2. At the time of the accident, she was found to have 3 different
anti-depressants and a stomach relaxer in her blood.

3. After she was charged with 2 counts of vehicular homicide and failure
to yield when turning left, she was arrested for DUI and her husband was
ticketed for an open container violation.

4. She served 60 days in jail for the DUI and when released from jail to
home-arrest, she chose to ignore the conditions of that home arrest and
appeared at the workplace (Publix) of Lennie's step-daughter on several
occasions - forcing the manager of the store to make a complaint to the
court. She was sentenced to 10 days in jail for failure to comply with
home arrest.

Now we come to the vehicular homicide and failure to yield court case.
The Solicitor General, representing the people of Fayette County, has made
his sentencing recommendation to the court that would allow Mrs. Painter
to plea "no-contest" to all charges and receive 24 months of probation,
along with fines and a few other restrictions.

Knowing that past behavior is usually the best indicator of future
behavior, we do not understand how those elected to protect and keep safe
the people of Fayette County could recommend probation and no jail time
for the taking of two lives.

If you would be willing to support this in justice and help these families as they express
their concern with such a recommendation, please come to the Fayette
Justice Center on Jimmy Mayfield Drive on Tuesday, February 5th at 2:15
p.m. If you would support this and are unable to appear at the
courthouse that day, please feel free to put your thoughts on paper and
send them to or send them to Judge Fletcher Sams at the Superior, State & Magistrate Courts -One Center Drive or P.O.Box 130 - Fayetteville, GA 30214. Phone:770.716.4290 - Fax:770.716.4868

When is the next election for DA for Fayette County?

We used to be known as "Fayettenam" until Scotty took over. Criminals used to get the maximum sentence everytime, even for first offenders. His lovefests with criminals is killing this community.

Scotty is the weak link when it comes to law enforcement in Fayette.
The Sheriffs dept. and the police depts. are all doing a great job, now if we could just find a DA somewhere.......

Ballard replaced the incompetent Bill McBroom as DA. McBroom was probably the worst manager of any public agency in Fayette County history. He missed filing deadlines, couldn't manage case loads, etc. McBroom was simply out of his league.

Ballard's not to blame for this one, either. The solictor general James Inagawa handles all traffic cases for the county.

We simply don't know how to control the killing of 50-70,000 people every year in auto accidents.

Nothing is done in the case of most of them. Autos are dangerous, driving is dangerous, and we wish to drive our vehicles at whatever speed we wish, and encumbered as we might be by what we ingest or inherit!

Having judges sort it out--one by one--is about all we can do.
We allow each other to drive impaired and too fast. As long as that happens, the police can't do much.

Submitted by smoothassilk on Sat, 01/26/2008 - 8:35pm.

Thanks...I am really not asking for the Police to do anything, I am asking for JUSTICE here to pay for a crime that she committed and to protect future deadly accidents that this irresponsible person may cause based on her past behavior. And now charged with 1 DUI and 2 vehicular homicides! The Solicitor General, representing the people of Fayette County, has made his sentencing recommendation to the court that would allow Mrs. Painter to plea "no-contest" to all charges and receive 24 months of probation, along with fines and a few other restrictions. How is this justice?

Sure there are accidents all the time that are truely accidents from folks that have never had a speeding ticket, DUI ever in their lives and make a mistake. In this case, this woman should NEVER be behind the wheel. She deserves a sentence more than 24 months of probation with a few fines attatched. Don't ya think?

For those using this blog for information on the condition of the occupants of this terrible accident, my friend John Minaberry passed away this morning. He was truly "one of the good guys" in life and blessed all who were lucky enough to know him. His family and friends will truly miss him but rest easy knowing he's at the feet of our lord and savior. I am equally sorry to know of Lennie's death and wish his family and friends my sincere condolances.

We ask that you continue to keep the family in your prayers, his twin daughters April & Aimee are obviously completely devastated as am I.
May God Bless each and every one of you.

I have read the warm and affectionate thoughts from those who knew and loved Lennie. At last report Lennie was holding on by a wing and a prayer. Trisha, his sister, has told everyone that she is going to remove the life support if there is not a firm confirmation of brain activity. This seems to be very hasty decision in the light of the fact it’s only been three days. In addition to the wonderful thoughts expressed from his friend around Atlanta you should know that Lennie has moved on with his living and has a life and family with his high school sweetheart, my sister, Suzanne and her three lovely children, Chantal, Annette, and Jacob, in Spartanburg SC. It was great hearing these wonderful stories about Lennie and confirms that he had a huge capacity for love and life which anyone who knew him already knows. He was my best friend from the time we were in our early teens working here in Spartanburg, at the very place that Hank Williams’ Jr. song helped put on the map.

I know the intersection where the accident happened is very dangerous but I just never thought Lennie would be caught in a car accident (Making the trip on the busy I-85 between Spartanburg and Atlanta every weekend for almost 4 yrs without a single incident requires exceptional driving skills). In addition he loved his Porsche and drove it with kit gloves. Yesterday, I took my sister to the church where she was christened “The Episcopal Church of the Advent” in Spartanburg for Palm Sunday and then over to Petro’s (One of Lennie’s oldest and dearest friends) Big Daddy restaurant to just be together and see if we might send up an extra special prayer from the menu.

At last report (4/2 10:00 am) Lennie’s brain has continue to swell after surgery to re-set crushed bones in his legs and another scan for brain function. I’m not sure of the wisdom to continue to move him and do tests, it would seem at this point rest and time for the body to heal is in order. I know that Lennie believes in the power of prayer, as do I and if you do too feel free to join in offering up a special prayer… Not just for Lennie, but for all who cling to life against all hope struggle to fight for each and every heart beat, especially those in our military who have sustained serious wounds defending our freedoms… Give them strength to become spiritual warriors and a light for all who must endure against the darkest nights. Keep them in your heart, trust, and a special care.
Amen

How dare you get on here and post and out right lie, Trisha (Lennie's Sister) had NEVER said she was taking Lennie off of life support to ANYONE. Your sister was engaged to Lennie's brother just over 3 years ago (or so SHE said), while Lennie's brother was married to a beautiful woman here in Georgia. Rick (Lennie's brother) DIED in your sister (Suzannes) house, when Lennie and I received the phone call of Rick's death at 2:30am, WE had to call Rick's WIFE and tell her what happened. Where was your sister's loyalty then? And since you elected to get on here and make all these false allegations about "Lennie" the man I was with since 1989, lets clear up the rest, your "sister" didn't even wait until Rick was burried before she interfered with my marriage to Lennie and she KNEW we were married. So don't you dare get on here and judge my sister in law "Trisha" she has been more than fair to EVERYONE who wanted to visit Lennie including Suzanne, he has been in a coma for 6 days and where in the world you got "3 days" is beyond me!, it's not our fault your sister has only came to the hospital TWO TIMES. Lastly, Atlanta Medical Center has done a wonderful job and given him the best care possible. There are some things that us mere mortals can not control, God controls these things.
For the rest of the readers, our family thanks you so much for all your prayers, phone calls and support, Lennie loved living in Fayetteville, his friends and his family here.
God Bless

I’m sorry for Trish and all involved. But to be quite honest I was hurt and upset by the entire situation. It was my understanding that life support was only to sustain his organs and the decision was already made because the others involved in the crash were taken to The Grady Trama Center. I had no way of finding out otherwise because neither I or my sister were not provided a password from Trisha (which was just plain and simply cruel) for updates on Lennie's health condition.

Look both Lennie and Rick shared a home together with my family for many years we were raised as brothers… both Lennie and Rick had a crush on my sister from day one. Suzanne's first date was with Lennie. Lennie has always loved Suzanne. Life has its strange twists and turns. What happened to Rick was tragic, but his death was due to health problems as both Lennie and Rick had bad blood sugar which was a constant concern. Rick died of septic and systemic poisoning due his health condition and had nothing to do with my sister… My Suzanne was inconsolable at Rick’s demise and to insinuate otherwise is just plain ignorant. She gained nothing from Rick’s bereavement but bitter tears, and then Lennie appeared he understood what she was going thru because he was going thru it too.

No my sister has not retained attorneys as I’ve heard other’s have. My sister is content to deal with her pain in a very private manner. It is for the living I pray for God’s grace for the dearly too soon departed already know. On thing for sure She has her own land and property... She also has class and shame on those who would say otherwise. She has no intention of trying profit from this tragic accident. I’m sincerely sorry from any misunderstanding as we have all lost a dear friend, and one whom I will always be humbled and honored to have known as a true brother. My you all be Blessed by the wonders of life.

I'm going to tell you this and I expect that you leave our family alone especially during this time. Lennie is my Dad and I do not at all appreciate your blogs and it was all started by you. You assumed you knew what you were talking about and I advise you to stay out of it. You might of known Lennie and I don't care what you think you know, but obviously your information is wrong so leave it alone and move on and worry more about your family then coming on here and blogging and starting Drama. I assume that you are grown and if so then act like it. Your sister has admitedly kept our Dad away from us so let us grieve in peace. I choose to remember him for the good things. He loved us all and whether or not you choose to believe it he love my Mom. That was a bond that will never be broken. Once you love someone that person is a part of you whether or not you are together. They had their problems as do we all. So let it go and let everyone have their own memories. Keep your life in Spartanberg and we shall keep ours here. Have class why don't you!!!

I do want to add that the fact you have as far as a legal representative your facts are way wrong. The Lawyer is strictly for his sisters use to help her get stuff she needs to get done so next time don't speculate.

Don't let that knucklehead above luckystar get to you.

The people who post regularly can spot BS a mile off.....no one believed what that fool had to say.

You are in my thoughts and prayers. My brother was in the hospital for over a year because of a car accident. Hang in there.....even when it seems like it won't get better.....it is a trite cliche....but it is true....it's always the darkest before dawn...

I guess what I'm saying is save your strength for the months of physical therapy he will need.....he will need a lot of help with that....but you have many friends..

When my brother was in the hospital these verses gave me comfort

Luke 12:27 and Isaiah 40:31

Rely on the love of your friends I wish you the best.

I just wanted to add my prayers and faith and hope also to all of
Lennie's family. We have known Lennie for several years and do know
what a kind and caring person he is. We went to the hospital yesterday to see him and give our support to his family. We have met his Aunt and Uncle from California and his 2 step daughters. We met his sister Trish and her husband and indeed liked them from the start.
We have talked for long hours about Lennie and his life and I know
Trish has not once said she was going to remove the life support on her brother.
That is a mistake and she would never do that.I do also understand
that when they do brain scans, it tells the Drs alot,
dont get me wrong, the doctors are not always right either.
In this case they have ran the test twice and has been the same, no
change, there has been no brain activity. Lets do hope time is on his side. And he does need time to heal.
We really dont have to do anything at all, but pray to God that he does what is best for Lennie.I understand the loss of someone very special to me because my son worked with Lennie and he died about 2 years ago. Lennie was teaching him the art of Locksmith and Dustin really enjoyed it and loved working with Lennie. He told me many times that Lennie was patient and always trying to teach him how to get everything just right.
Lennie was there for my son and was there for us .
So my family and I will be there for Lennie and his family. We all need someone in a time of crisis. So we need to stick together and just pray for the best.

We are with you Lennie and please know, we love and care.
Godspeed Lennie......

John Minaberry was the passenger of the Porche involved in the accident on Hwy 74. He is a retired Delta pilot, an avid motorcyclist and one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. He is currently in ICU at Grady Hospital with numerous broken bones. He has been suffering other health issues prior to this accident but continues to maintain a sense of humor you have to admire. I wish all involved a speedy recovery but if you'd like to send John or his wife Diane a message and keep up with John's progress you can do it by logging on to www.freewebs.com/jminaberry. The area between the middle school and Ruby Tuesday, going north is like "rollerderby."
Those idiots in the west lane wanting to go east will speed past everyone that are in the right lane (the east lane) and then cut in no matter how difficult or dangerous to get to the light before it changes. The idiots in the west lane wanting to go west will spped past a long line in the east at full gallop in order to make the light. They seem to have no fear of someone deciding to go west and pulling into the west lane. If one did that he probably wouldn't see the idiot due to his speed (I would judge 55-65).
Quite often they aren't going even out of town!
Cops need to call this reckless and life endangering.

I am very close to Lenny's Step-Daughters (Daughters if you ask any of us) and Barbie. I've been at the hospital with the girls. This is a strong group, but we all need to gather round this family and be their support system. I'm constantly praying for Lenny and the Family. Aimee, April & Barbie... I love you guys. You know if you need ANYTHING, I'm here. Stay strong & have faith. Lenny is has a fighting soul.

And... while I'm here.... Peachtree City certainly needs to get their game together. I used to teach at Royal Learners (immediately inside of this intersection). That was 2002 and 2003. Terrible accidents were happening 5 years ago at 74 & Aberdeen. I myself have almost been hit there! It's time to do something.... NOW!!!

Peachtree City certainly needs to get their game together.

Peachtree City has no control over anything being done about this intersection. Highway 74 is on the STATE. The STATE would be who you want to complain to, not the CITY. And given how very very long it took them to put a light on Highway 54 at the hospital (a deadlier intersection than Aberdeen/Hwy 74), I wouldn't hold your breath.

We all wish the best for those involved in the accident. No matter who was at fault, it was a tragedy.

Correct, NOW the state runs GA 74, however GA had nothing to do with PTC allowing the whole mess of commercialism crammed into and around that intersecrion at 54/74.
This evaluation is exactly what happens down the road when a city allows more stores than traffic can reasonably bear whenin the wrong place!
Try to imagine TDK and 74 in ten to fifteen years.

First off, I hope those involved in this horrific accident recover quickly.

Unfortunately, I fear this is just the beginning.

I hope scenes like this one don't bother you Mr. Mayor and PTC City Council members. They're going to become all too common with the uncontrolled BIG BOX developments that you want to shove into PTC.

The rezoning of the Stephens property won’t be your last act of selling us down the river as it will no doubt be followed by another lack of honor, TDK!

Mr. Mayor and city council members don't be surprised if pictures like this show up in your mail every time something like this happens. I wouldn’t want you to forget the legacy you worked so hard for.

By putting "Public Safety" last on you list of concerns I would suggest that all of you not consider running for office in the future. I'll be the one holding up posters with pictures like this at your rallies reminding everyone how you sold us out.

Our councilFOOLS have complete disrespect for the very people who were instrumental in rescuing these people and making sure that no one else got hurt. Then the next morning they had a repeat performance at Peachtree Pky and hwy54.

They handed these men and women what bascally amounts to a paycut when they made them pay more out of pocket for health insurance and failed to give them cost of living raises.

Our councilFOOLS have put all of us at risk by short changing these people....we need all of our public safety people more than we need our councilFOOLS.

To all of our officers and firefighters thank you for being there for us. You did a fantastic job, and I know you all had to work harder than usual because staffing is so short. Thanks to all of you who have not resigned yet.

Wow, This is some great reporting! We know there was a wreck and that 3 people were seriously injured, and the car was trashed. How did it happen ? Was it a two car accident, one car accident?
Was it caused by excessive speed , the lack of visibility , the lack of a traffic light? All these details , and more were NOT addressed.

I agree, I saw it from the World Gym, the aftermath anyways. Somebody had to have made a serious mistake. There was more than just the Porsche involved, and that Porsche took a serious lick, because those are solid cars. I'm thinking speed, folks are rarely at the speed limit there on 74, and someone failing to see oncoming traffic.

I hope everyone is alright.

A few years back he hired a young man to help him do his locksmith business.knowing that the young man had a problem with drugs, Lennie never gave up on the kid and helped him through good times and bad. Well to make a long story short.......Lennie wound up be a pallbearer for this kid when others had turned their backs on him long before his death. How do I know all of this? Lennie and I started the business together in 1996 and we were very blessed with an awesome clientele, we eventually hired several new employee's, but Dustin was "special" and we saw that in him from the beginning, Dustin always treated both of us with dignity and respect, and Lennie's heart is so big that he refused to give up on Dustin and I don't blame him, he has a heart of gold...it hurt him deeply when your son passed.
Lennie is a fighter, I know him so well, and I believe with all of my heart that he will continue to fight and make it through this.

My husband and I came upon this wreck and pulled into Pikes as one life flight then another landed. I told him a few weeks ago that eventually 74 will have a red light at every intersection. I remember when I moved to Tyrone and had a party, there were no red lights. Direction simply said go south on 74 and when you cross over a bridge hang a right. Now that I live in PTC, I don't even know how many lights there are before you turn.
My prayers to all involved in this accident.

Another bad accident happened this morning @54 and Peachtree Pkwy at about 10:45 am .....no lifeflight though.. That intersection even has traffic lights,...not like the intersection involved last night...you think it would be safer.

I heard the driver of the Porsche died prior to life-flight arriving. I hope this is wrong. My prayers to everyone involved. I drove by at 10:00pm and it was still closed and the police were taking measurements. From what I heard, the Porsche was traveling north bound on 74 and was struck by a vehilce traveling south bound, turning left onto Aberdeen Parkway.

No one died at the scene. And as far as I know from when I was last at work, no one has died, period. One is very critical.
