It was bad enough but it could have been much worse. A Griffin man was arrested on multiple charges early Sunday morning in Fayetteville while dragging an officer after fleeing a traffic stop and endangering three people.

Frank Marvin Craft, 59, was charged with three counts of aggravated assault, possession of cocaine, obstruction of an officer, DUI alcohol, tampering with evidence and acquiring a license plate for purposes of concealing a vehicle, according to Fayetteville Police spokesperson Beverly Trainor.

The incident occurred at approximately 1 a.m. on Ga. Highway 85 at North 85 Parkway. Craft pulled his white Oldsmobile up to the road safety check area on Hwy. 85 and was asked for his license. As Craft handed over his license the officer noticed a small zip-lock type bag in the man’s hand and asked Craft about it, Trainor said. Craft then threw the bag containing suspected crack cocaine at the officer, she said.

Trainor said the officer responded by grabbing Craft’s arm as he started the Oldsmobile, and drove it onto the median and then into the northbound lanes of Hwy. 85. The officer fell away from the car after his body hit the side of the vehicle, Trainor said, noting that the officer was not injured in the incident.

As Craft headed south he nearly struck another officer and a civilian accompanying police on a ride-along, Trainor said. The two had to jump out of the way to avoid being hit by Craft’s vehicle, reports said.

Trainor said Craft continued traveling south in the northbound lanes of Hwy. 85 until he reached Fayette Pavilion, with officers in pursuit. Though the late night traffic was light Craft did meet at least two oncoming vehicles in the short distance between North 85 Parkway and the Pavilion, officers said. Those drivers were able to avoid a collision, said Trainor.

Once at the Pavilion, Craft crossed back into the southbound lanes of Hwy. 85. He brought the vehicle to a stop and was taken into custody.

Craft was also wanted by East Point Police for failure to appear on a traffic offense and is on parole in Fulton County on unknown charges, Trainor said.

Every time the FPD has done a "safety check" lately, they've successfully removed wanted persons from our streets. Every time they do any kind of traffic stop they face this kind of danger (or worse).

Thank you, FPD, for doing such a great job. So glad no one was injured.
