What is Mayor Logsdon’s vision for Peachtree City?

Tue, 03/27/2007 - 2:47pm
By: Letters to the ...

Mr. Mayor, about 18 months ago I met with you to discuss your positions regarding the Holly Grove Road area, with the potential impact development would have on our neighborhood and the surrounding area.

At the time I was the president of the Wilshire Estates Homeowner’s Association Board of Directors, and we met in the parking lot of the nearby Eckerd’s.

While you were understandably vague about some things as only one of several candidates in the race at the time, never did you mention that your “vision” of Peachtree City was that we would become a regional retail hub.

You ended up winning the election based on, essentially, one slogan: “Leadership!”

So one of two things must have happened since I met with you: Either you held this retail vision close to the vest in order to not upset the voters, or you were led by the hand of the developers with the enticement of tax dollars to rescue a city budget that suddenly became tight after you took office.

Leadership requires vision and communication. I graduated from the Naval Academy in Annapolis and have spent 20 years active and reserve in the Navy, so I have some experience in this area.

Your leadership so far has consisted of repeating the developers’ sales pitch to our neighborhood after trying to keep this underground, neither of which qualifies as vision or communication. Some things to consider:

• Financial analysis: What is the true cost of this commercial development (revenue minus city expenses for police, fire, cart path improvements and maintenance, and loss of tax revenue from other businesses in the city that close)?

A case could clearly be made that this will be revenue neutral at best. If you have numbers that say otherwise, you need to present them (Communication).

• Traffic: Did we learn anything from Planterra Ridge? What is the city’s plan for Holly Grove Road, other than just reacting to the traffic complaints that are certain to come after this is put in place (Vision)?

• Retail dominos: Nobody is foolish enough to believe that if a “Large Home Improvement Retailer” exists on the south side of Peachtree City, the remainder of the existing land there would continue to be small commercial or office/medical space.

We understand that you would want to annex the adjacent land along Ga. Highway 74 in order for Peachtree City to have some “control” over what is built there, but the best “control” is to keep the regional retailers from being built in the first place.

If the rezoning HAS to take place (I am not convinced it must) then we should establish a true village commercial center that does not cannibalize from existing village centers, detract from our city’s quality of life, or lead us down the dark path of chasing tax dollars at the expense of our neighborhoods.

We need REAL leadership on this issue: Where do you stand?

Will Soper

Peachtree City, Ga.

Gosh Darn It.
I wish those people that started Peachtree City Development Corporation had never gotten their money together and bought all the farm and swamp land in west Fayette County back in 1971. We had a nice little moonshine operation going until the surveyors found moonstill number 5 up Spear Creek Road. That thing was producing upwards of 500 gallons a day until the revenuers busted it up. If it hadn't been for them, Spear Road would still be in the family. We had to sell the property to pay the judges off so they wouldn't send brother up the creek. And what about the old ground hog operation over at Bralin Pond? Lost another 250 still there. We had a nice place to live and earn our income. Now it is full of those self righteous, self indulgent, self absorbed, selfish, Nimb rods, (not in my backyard) whining, moaning, groaning, complaining about how traffic around big box development will destroy their quality of life. They want to see the kind of stores this development will bring to be located in some place like Union City. Then they will complain about how far they have to drive to go shopping. Then complain about high gas prices. Then complain about how cars are destroying the environment. Then complain about how the environment around their homes is being threaten by crime. Then we NoFF's, natives of Fayette Families, can stop complaining about all them people that moved in back in 1971.
Did the Amy Nyman's of Peachtree City think that the place was established by the Indian's and only recently suddenly grew to the size that it is. Good God people. That is the way white people work. Find something they like. They tell all their friends. Everyone wants to move in. Then they all complain about the traffic and how they can't get a table at Outback.

Today, conservative American's tell liberal American's that complain about how the country is going down hill, if you don't like it here then move. And as a NoFF since 1832, I will tell you all, if you don't like it here, then move.

Run for Mayor

I would gladly be that for you. Because we could use a "peoples' mayor." I doubt the mayor will answer any of your questions candidly. There seems to be a lack of accountability existing in City Hall these days. We can only hope that our collective voices stir something within the City's leadership that enlightens them to the fact that the citizens of Peachtree City should have a voice and a level of control over OUR CITY!
Thanks for taking the time to address this. Stay in the fight!!!

Cheers,

Where has Kevin King been? We had a “people’s mayor” and we voted him out of office. Weren’t the lines clearly drawn before? It was pretty clear Harold Logsdon was going to represent the good old boys from the very start. It’s hard for me to figure out why everyone is so surprised with the direction Logsdon is going.

Aren’t the people Steve Brown was fighting day in and day out the same people Logsdon is helping with the annexations and big boxes? There are a lot of people in this town who have only themselves to blame for what is happening to us now. Brown is still fighting the battles for us still.

I voted for Steve Brown and couldn't believe the firestorm of hatred against him. They even called him a (gasp) "closet democrat!" Hay, Dios Mio!!! I absolutely agree that Peachtree City gets what and who they vote for. Kind of reminds me of our nation right now. I bet many people would change past votes if given the chance. Sadly, many still would not, no matter the facts and the reality.

Cheers,

Let us know when the two of you are going to run for Mayor/City Council.

We could use people that have a sense of moral integrity.

Hi Bad. You've been around these blogs long enough to know that I have an evidence trail three miles long in these archives. A pork chop would have a better chance of making it through the night in a lion's cage than I would have of being elected for any position in this town. But Will, he's different. He is diplomatic, eloquent, and he'd look good on campaign posters. That makes my campaign manager job a peice of cake. I am relieved that things are moving in the right direction with the southside urbanization project. Hopefully all of this will serve to cause voters to actually think before they cast.

Cheers Mate,

Kevin "Hack" King

I won't go as far as Kevin - campaign manager, but I would vote for you and contribute financially.

You are on target with your position on these few issues. Please speak up and expand on them and maybe we will see you as our next mayor.

Hey Robert! Someone said you were seriously ill. If that was true then it's good to see you back and I hope you're doing well. Best wishes. Come to think of it.... even if you weren't ill I hope you're doing well. Smiling

After Mudcat said you were in the hospital we felt sorry for you. By unanimous vote (including Father Oops) you get to keep the Morgan photo (may he rest in peace). Hope you are well.

If your doctor say diet and exercise - listen to him. I didn't and had a very expensive and serious heart procedure that could have probably been prevented by a healthier lifestyle 20 years ago. You'll see me out walking and exercising every day from now on - soon as I can.
