4th man throws his hat in ring for sheriff

Another Fayette resident has thrown his hat into the ring to run for sheriff.

Al Hogan, who formerly worked under current Sheriff Randall Johnson but left the department to “better provide” for his family, announced last week that he too is running for the office.

Hogan joins three other current members of the department in officially announcing their candidacy. The others include Capt. Barry Babb, 40, the assistant division director of field operations, Lt. Col. Wayne Hannah, 51, director of the traffic enforcement and training division and Thomas Mindar, 37, a specialist (equivalent to a corporal) in the warrants division.

All are vying to replace current long-serving Sheriff Randall Johnson, whose term expires at the end of next year.

Hogan, 43, has lived in Fayette since 1969 and is a 1982 graduate of Fayette County High School. He joined the sheriff’s department after graduating college with a criminal justice degree, starting as a jailer before graduating to road patrol.

He left the department briefly for a stint as a federal air marshal (before the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, he noted) and he returned to the sheriff’s department afterward and worked narcotics for a while before being transferred to work drug cases at Hartsfield International Airport in efforts to stem drug trafficking.

All told Hogan spent 10 years in law enforcement before leaving for a job in the private sector. Currently he sells heavy equipment at a dealership in Lake City.

Hogan, his wife and two children live in south Fayette.

To all of you complaining about law enforcement personnel being hired just out of high school, please note that Al Hogan is a college graduate with a criminal justice degree.

What is that? Where does one buy them? Phoenix University, maybe?
Degrees aren't very important for most civil service jobs anyway. Experience in on the street enforcement is.
Maturity is critical.
Laws constantly change, so legal advisors are needed for that knowledge.
And, the least one sees the Sheriff, the better he is doing his job, probably.

What do you people want? If a person has no degree, you act like it's a disgrace. If a person has a degree, you question where they got it and say that degrees are not important. It's at the point that no decent person wants to be recognized for any good deed in this paper because of the bloggers who tear them apart. If someone does something that is newsworthy, they don't want The Citizen to find out about it. Frankly, I wonder why any person in their right mind would ever run for office in this county.

A sheriff's job is to catch Robin Hood stealing from those that have.
If he has a legitimate degree, fine, if not, fine, it doesn't matter as long as he catches Robin!
This election is not a beauty contest nor a friend's of mine contest.
Making employees happy and making criminals unhappy is not the job.
Managing people well, running an excellent jail and court, and policing the county well is the job.
Can't be done with or without any degree. proper experience is a must.

While you're at it make 'em chili-only dogs with spuds not rings.

And don't forget an F.O. for the road!

BTW loved the Klanpoints post. Might very well be the funniest thing ever posted on this site!

Good luck Al Hogan. Before its all said and done, there will probably be several people running. May the best person win!

OK, Which one of these guys is responsible for the "poor" shape of the county deputies? The 1 thang that stuck in my mind last year during the Tour de GA on the Court Sq was how outta shape these guys look. PTC is young. I'm told the county EMS guys...Have to work-out. It's not just that they are "lard a@@'s" but you are more likely to use "deadly force" if you ain't up to the task.
Again, I still say a Professional County PD is called for and it is not the "duplication" of services that other posters (& 1 runnin' for the office & power) have claimed. A county PD would be more about what you know than who you know. I like that several of these resumes are hired outta HS (like Jordan), 18 y/o radio operators, jail keepers, patrol & etc.
Will the new sheriff keep the COPter @ an airport (Falcon Field) or enlarge the complex?

bladderq hon...you don't get it do you? It won't matter which dept. any cop works for.....they still are going to be out to get you and people like you.

So everytime you speed, blow through a stop sign, tail light out, DUI, whatever, and they still will be out to get you. Whether they work for the sheriff's office, city PD, or county PD, or marshall's office....it won't matter....
How many lead paint chips did you have to eat as a kid to turn out like this?

You are the kind of person that cops and good citizens love to hate. You have that "I'm above the law" attitude. The "my kids are never wrong", and "I'm never wrong as the parent" attitude. The "I shouldn't have to accept the consequences for my bad behavior" attitude that drives people nuts.

You have what cops everywhere refer to as a "negative attitude" and they don't care for it. You can make fun of them all you want to, but it sounds like you are perpetually on the wrong side of the law. COPTER is going to get you.

I suppose that a lot of Law Enforcement appear to be out of shape. What difference does that make when they get the job done. I am sure that most of the people who you are talking about would save your life in a second and not hesitate to do it either.
The shame of it all, bladderq, is that most of the "out of shape" deputies that you refer to could have, and HAVEN'T, used deadly force when it became an issue.
We all can't be IRONMEN and Olympic Weight lifters. But, what we can be is there for you at your worst possible moment. That time when you are huddled under a dinner table while some psyhcopath systematically executes everyone in sight. When your elderly mother's car blows a tire in the rain and she can't change it herself.
Or when your drug using neighbor kicks in your front door and you run with your family to safety.
Sure, a lot of Law Enforcement COULD be in better shape. But, what is more important to you? The way look compared to your standards? Or, being there when it counts.
