Boycott the ‘politically correct’?

There’s a big hullabaloo stirring this year about which department stores will permit the words, “Merry Christmas,” to be uttered on their premises. A national television preacher has announced a campaign against stores that prohibit the use of the greeting while TV’s Bill O’Reilly has ground his own religious axe over the issue. Some of these folks are urging us not to shop in stores where “Merry Christmas” is not heard.

Hey, my fellow Christians, it is precisely in those stores we should shop, spreading as much authentic Christmas cheer as possible. A store manager may direct an employee not to say the words, but no one can tell me what fellow shopper or what employee to whom I may say, “Merry Christmas.”

Did not Jesus say that we should be the light of the world and the salt of the earth? What better place to be light and salt than in dark and tasteless places? Boycott has never been the policy of historic Christianity. Our policy has been to “go into all the world ...”

Does it hurt me a bit that some stores want to fake it by saying, “Happy Holidays?” You bet it does. But you know, they know, and I know deep down that Jesus is the reason for the season. If it were not for the birth of Jesus Christ some 2000 years ago in Bethlehem, no retail outlet would be happy this December.

So, rather than getting a knot in our Christmas stocking, let’s forget all the boycott stuff and buy where we want to buy and spread as much of Christ as we can. Remember, he said it, I didn’t, “You can tell my followers by their love...”

Love them into the real author of Christmas, don’t boycott and stick out your tongue. Stick out your hand in genuine friendship.

Well said. I'm agnostic, and even I say Merry Christmas.

How about the example Christ set instead when entering the places the sinners entered to drink and such?

He made his presence and message known but nothing to support the establishment.

No, I don't mean be disruptive. But make your Christmas spirit known.

Shop where we want the rest of the year but give them a message when they are watching the bottom line seasonally.
