McIntosh and Starr's Mill soccer teams split: MHS boys, SMHS girls take victoriesFri, 03/02/2007 - 10:14pm
By: Michael Boylan
Video below –– Starr's Mill hosted the biggest matches of the young soccer season tonight as they faced off against McIntosh's varsity boys and girls. All four teams are ranked in the top 10 of Class AAAA.
The boys placed first and the Chiefs struck first with Michael Mateos scoring after a scramble in front of the Panther goal with just over four minutes remaining in the first half.
Starr's Mill's Chris Capati answered less than a minute into the second half and the two teams remained tied until McIntosh's Derek Farnsworth found the upper lefthand corner of the net with a blast off of a breakaway down the right sideline.
The score remained 2-1 and McIntosh left with a significant region win.
"Derek wanted this win really bad," said Coach Bunky Colvin after the game, also heaping praise on to defender Joaquin Reyes who prevented a certain Starr's Mill goal in the first half. "Not only did he make that save, but he was in the right place all night tonight."
The McIntosh girls didn't fare as well as their male counterparts. Starr's Mill's Katrina Frost scored less than 10 minutes into the game and scored off of an indirect kick with just over five minutes remaining in the first half.
Nearly halfway through the second half,. the Lady Panthers' Marlene Davis outdid Reyes' amazing defensive save by heading out two sure-fire McIntosh goals in a row.
The Lady Chiefs did score with just over 16 minutes remaining in the game off of a booming kick from Kaelyn Horton that found the top of the net. Starr's Mill hung on for a 2-1 victory.
