Just a question

Good afternoon, I am a deputy with the Fayette County Sheriff’s office. I work the morning watch and have been quietly following the talk around the Department about who from the Department is going to run for Sheriff in 2008. I have been off for a few days and returned to work to be told that Lt. Colonel Wayne Hannah has officially announced that he is running for the office of Sheriff. I was standing with a group of my peers that were discussing how bad that would be for the department, when a thought struck me, that thought was that Hannah can’t be the next Sheriff because his wife is a Lieutenant with the Department and we have a policy that says that a spouse or relative can not be supervised by the other. When I mentioned this to my friends, they advised me that Hannah had already figured out how to solve this problem. I was advised that Hannah has already said that he will change the policy so that his wife can remain an employed Lieutenant working for him. My question and concern is this; are we as employees going to be subject to four years of the Bruce way of supervising where if the rules don’t fit the boss then the boss just changes the rules. I don’t think it’s fair to us and I don’t think that’s the kind of person we want representing us or the citizens of Fayette County. Please think before you vote!

Oh for petes sake.

I guess if you don't have much of a campaign to be Sheriff you can sit here and take pot shots at someone and imply something ugly. Running for Sheriff has to mean more than having a platform of attacking qualified people. Save the department has either got to be a punch drunk pugilist or a wishy-washy, never around the office, look out for myself guy.

For the most part, most people at the Sheriff's Office, have a neutral opinion of Lieutenant Colonel Hannah and his wife. Between the two of them, no one can ever point to anything either has ever done that is unethical, immoral, or inappropriate.

But, as is the case with these blogs, anyone can say anything they want, and unless its slanderous, it get printed.

Come on now, savethedepartment, don't start out crawling through the mud, if you have an issue, bring it out. Wait I've got it, you realize you don't have a chance to win, so this is how you hope to gather attention for yourself (or your canidate).

I am not here to attack Wayne’s contribution to the Department. He is a good traffic supervisor (aside from his alliance with Woody). You ask me to point out what the problem is and I don’t think I can make it any clearer than I did. Since you appear to be so in the loop, please explain to me (if my coworkers are wrong) how he is going to solve the nepotism violation if he becomes Sheriff.

From the outside looking in this is what the average citizen wants in a sheriff, or any officer.

We want someone tough on crime!

We don't want someone who "grandstands" in front of cameras.(we are sick to death of Chief Murray luring sex offenders here, so that my tax dollar can pay for their jail time. Did we really need to bait that last homeless jobless idiot here??)

We want someone who is concerned for the taxpayers safety, even if that means that some of them get tickets.(that also means patroling neighborhoods, not just the buisness section, don't we all pay taxes?)

We like being known as Fayettenam

We want someone who will be more like the "tent sheriff" in Arizona.(if you are paying more than .40cts. a day per prisoner to feed them, you are wasting my tax dollar, and I don't appreciate it! Criminals aren't worth good food, snap out of it!)

We want a sheriff that criminals and the satanic kids are afraid of.

From the outside looking in it looks like Hannah has been just doing his job keeping us safe. His wife Lt. Hannah could find a job as a police chief somewhere. I have never met either of the Hannahs but I have heard nothing but good things about them.

When speaking to a good friend of mine who is a Sheriff's Deputy, I asked him if he ever perused the postings on this website. He said he reads them frequently, but is not supposed to post any comments due to his job. I was just curious if this applied to all of you guys, or if he was misunderstood. In any event, who would YOU like to see run for sheriff? And do you support our current one?

IT makes me wonder if IT is really a deputy at all or if IT is just another sheriff's department detractor (political hack) looking for another opportunity for IT to take a free shot at our sheriff and his deputies.

HAHA! Since reading this the other day, I've asked SEVERAL FCSD friends of mine their opinion: they all seem to agree with you..and Me.

I'm sure Hannah has thought about this issue and I'm sure there is a reasonable solution to it, after all ANYONE who knows him knows that he is a reasonable person, certainly not prone to rash or marginally legal decisions attributable to those you have named here. This is issue that can work it's self out long before any election takes place. The real issue is whether or not you can continue to raise money for your own campaign while you are on duty and visiting around on the north end of the county.......

I find this hard to think is true. If this Colonel fellow is that dumb to say that, he of course will never be elected.
Better get a second source!

Could be time to turn the Marshalls into a PROFESSIONAL FC Police Dept. Politics should not have any place in law ENFORCEMENT. My understanding of statue the county sheriff has very defined responsibility...jail, court, warrant, etc.
I could care less but all in all Dunn & Wells were probably right.

Please tell me you are kidding. I hope you're being sarcastic when you suggest we turn the Marshalls into a "Professional FC Police Dept." They're a JOKE. They do the commissioners' bidding, and spend all day driving around looking for sign ordinance violations. NO, I'm not affiliated with the FCSD, (other than having a few friends on the force), but I am completely disgusted with past actions of the Marshalls. I think THEY should be abolished altogether. FC Sheriff's Deputies are an asset to our community, not a waste of taxpayers' dollars like the marshalls.

This is a simple problem to solve if it is the correct one.
Leave the Sheriff to run the jail and court, and transfer everyone else to the county police department, along with the budget.

All police ultimately work for politicians.
It is the closest we can get to "government by laws, rather than by man."
They have to work for someone who is elected, not hired. Who would hire them?
In any case, we still have a lot of favortism in police work due to the creatures we elect.
