F’ville police also find bulletproof vest, ski mask in car

A routine traffic stop helped Fayetteville police stop an accused drug dealer in his tracks early Sunday morning, police said.

The vehicle, a grey 1985 Chevy Caprice, was initially stopped for weaving by Officer Scott Isreal on North Jeff Davis Drive near Ga. Highway 85, police said. One of the passengers, Clarence Edward Mathis of College Park, had a loaded 9mm pistol magazine in his right front pocket and 17 small plastic bags of marijuana tied to a button on the inside fly of his pants, police said.

Inside the car, police found a loaded Smith and Wesson 9mm that had been stolen from Newport News, Va., a .45-cal Ruger handgun and a fully-loaded .45-caliber magazine.

Police also found a red ski mask and a bulletproof vest inside the vehicle.

The bags of marijuana found inside Mathis’s pants were packaged for individual sale, police said.

Mathis, 19, of Buffington Road, College Park was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, carrying a concealed weapon and theft by receiving stolen property.

The driver of the car, John Walton, 20, of Centerview Drive, Duluth was charged with theft by receiving stolen property, carrying a concealed weapon and a traffic offense. A second passenger, Christopher Stewart, 22, of Pebble Beach Drive, College Park, was charged with theft by receiving stolen property and carrying a concealed weapon.

Police do not know where the trio had come from nor where they were going, a spokesperson confirmed Monday. They were arrested without difficulty, police said.

that feels a little (very) uneasy when an "Exscalade" pulls up next to me at the light with dark tint goin' bump-bump-bump. It makes me sort of wish we had more shoot first cops. I know that too sounds scary, but if I'm where I'm supposed to be, doing what I'm supposed to be doing, it's cool. The questions can, if possible, come later. We need swifter justice and extremely severe penalties. Keep up the good work F.C.S.D. and F.P.D. we're counting on you.

If a pick-up truck with Klansmen in the back with shotguns rode through Riverdale playing Dixie on loud speakers, and flying forty rebel flags, I'm afraid there would be hell to pay!
Don't some realize that the Escalade episode makes some feel the same way in Fayetteville about minorities?

see what's up in the pickup. I'd much rather be able to see it coming and have the opportunity to just go the other way. I guess my point is you never know who's next door 'til it's too late most of the time.
p.s. there is a difference between an Escalade and an Exscalade.

Not to nitpick John Munford, but shouldn't the headline read "Traffic stop nets 3 dopes, 2 guns"? Sticking out tongue

Way to go Officer Israel!

By the way, are things getting worse in Fayetteville with the daily drug headlines or is it my imagination?

is absolutely the best in my book! He was a very influential DARE officer several years back and all the children, mine included, loved him. When I learned he was no longer a DARE officer, I felt he had left his calling, but an outstanding officer like him will excel no matter where he works.

Great job, Officer Isreal - and I'm so thankful you arrested this trio without incident.

Let's hope that liberal crimeloving, bedwetter, floyd doesn.t get a hold of these three waste-of-clean-air-criminals.

Are you sure they didn't threaten you? They are here because they know in Dekalb County those cops are defending themselves when threatened by a criminal with a weapon.

The cops here need to stop clowning around and defend themselves within the full extent of GA state law when their lives are threatened.

Thank you Fayettville Police for being on the ball, protecting the citizens of this great city, and for getting another car load of punks/thugs off of the street. We salute you!

Don't quote me on this, but i think there are alot of jurisdictions in this country where these police officers would have been "forced" to defend themselves, if you smell what I'm cookin. There is not a military soldier any more courageous than the men and women who patrol our streets never knowing what is behind the tinted windows of the cars they stop. GOD BLESS ALL OF YOU! May you daily return home safely. That is my prayer for you all tonight!! Way to go!
