WHO is really building the upscale homes here?

I was told, this week someone went into one of the more expensive houses being built in Tyrone, only to find nothing there but Mexican labor. Seeing the plumbing being installed and knowing there was suppose to be a master plumber on site when this was done, they called the code inforcer. The code inforcer came and accepted the excuse that the master plumber had gone to run an errand. The law is that he has to be there when the plumbing is done. I wonder how many people buying these expensive homes will be affected by this sort of thing. When you pay top dollar, you would think that only the best quality labor and knowledge would be used.

This, like your buddy "Outofthere's" blog, is 100% comedy. Really good stuff, mate. Just curious, do people who are half black have to go? If Strom Thurmon is your dad, do you get a voucher? What if you exclusively date whites? Can they buy you a pass to stay? If you are a quarter black, can you have dual residency? If I leave, can I take my government jet airplanes with me? Can I "swing by" your house (or trailer home) on my way south to drop off a cluster of packages? You crack me up. Don't singe your robe at tonight's burnin.

In fact one subdivisions nickname was "leakmont" for a long time because all of the roofs in that development leaked. The windows were not sealed properly in many other developments by the same guy. Many independent contractors in Fayette and surrounding counties continuely remark about how a certain develper has made them rich, because they have to re-do the work by the illegals he hires.

Apparently this won't change and the cities and counties here still deal with this idiot instead of running him out of town.

I know, I know,.... he coun't make a buck if he paid guys with experience to do the job right the first time.

I thought Tyrone did not have a code enforcement officer. Have they hired a new one? May be he or she has not been properly trained yet.

Submitted by oldbeachbear on Sun, 02/25/2007 - 11:14am.

It seems the same people who have been wearing many hats, put this one on that day and went out there. They are not new and they know the rules and what they are suppose to do.

Submitted by simplelife on Sun, 02/25/2007 - 12:35pm.

What is Tyrone's problem. Can they not afford to hire a code enforcer or is this another one of those jobs that a legal citizen will not do? You know how lazy we are. I don't think it would involve to much hard labor. The hard part would be not to make the wrong persons mad. May be not speaking English would be a benefit.

Where have you been for the last 20 years. Mexican labor has been used on most of the houses in this area and across the US for years. Do you know why? They do the work Americans do not want to do. They are reliable, hard working, and skilled workers. They are paid the going rate for the job not cents on the dollars as you imagine. There is a lot of money to be made in construction, but it is HARD WORK, LONG HOURS - something many here do not want to do. If you decide to put the majority of the US in jail I hope you know who will be building all the new jails!!

Submitted by oldbeachbear on Sun, 02/25/2007 - 11:09am.

"They are paid the going rate"....? Oh please! Then tell me the attraction? You might also tell me what you do with the money that you save by not paying in SS on them etc. I got some swamp land to sell. Years ago you would see our teenage boys, or our young men home on college break, working on construction sites. Not anymore, and the quality full time American craftsman...people like you have long since done them out of a job. And the reason? More money in your pocket! No one else gains. Not the American worker and surely not the homeowner, nor for that matter, our economy...just you and the Mexican gain...not us.

Mexican labor has been used as cheap *labor* for years, but not for quality construction.

I was a licensed builder in the MD and VA area for a few years and I can tell you that *quality* workmanship is not something people here don't understand.

I trained under a *Master* stone mason, Italian, and a *Master* carpenter, Polish. Their skill-set is unheard of in the south.

If you want marble or granite stone work done on a fireplace or a built-in made of mahogany/black walnut or an inlay-ed slate counter top don't even think that the local labor market can provide it.

True craftsmanship is not to be found in cheap labor.

I changed profession years ago because working over 300 days in a row proved hazardous to my health; but because I had the opportunity to work with the best I can appreciate quality workmanship.

When you say, "They do the work Americans do not want to do." what your truly saying is that cheap labor is doing the work that most Americans think is good work.

The bottom line is, a granite counter top is a poor mans dream of true quality.

If you think I'm kidding you, go ask Dell computers what cheap labor, farmed out customer support, cost them last year.

I have been around the building trades most of life and there was never any trouble attracting workers, the reason so many Mexicans are doing this work is the price the americans out of the work. the americans can't live ten people to the trailor or rental house and split the costs and avoid the taxes. we have our family's here not in the third world where half our wages is a fortune. we have to pay the insurance and get the licenses to drive. when was the last time you heard of Mexico sending one of their citizens back here to face charges after they got in trouble. Nowyou may call me a racist if you want, but , if they come here legallyI have no problem with them or the Poles, the Russians,Chinese, koreans, or anyone but spare me that crap about they do the work that Americans won't do because that dog don't hunt.

You are very wrong. The illegal hispanic work force did not take over construction in this area until about seven or eight years ago when several large tract home builders came to the area from Texas and Calfornia. There was not a shortage of labor at the right price. Since then there has been a domino affect. It began with landscapers, masonry and framing. These contactors started out hiring illegals and after a while the builders just cut out the midlle man and just started dealing directly with the illegals. They drove wages down so far that the sub contractors that were doing this work decided to become builders and hired their own illegal work force. One thing has led to another and now we have all this over developement and if your quality built (Made in Mexico) home is less than two years old it may not be worth what you paid for it. There never has been a housing shortage from the lack of a qualified, taxpaying, Licensed legal American Citizen work force.
F.Y.I. Todays going rate for a illegal framing crew is $2.20 per sq. ft. Ten years ago it was $2.85.

You are right "not again" the alcohol and drug culture is prevalent in the construction industry and unfortunately it does not matter if you work for free if you don’t show up on a Monday morning. It has been the demise of many good workers over the years. Reliability is as important as money to a business.
The original homes in the Peachtree City villages prior to the Mexican invasion can hardly be put up to be testaments to quality – Glenloch, Aberdeen, Wynmeade etc. As to the teenagers and college kids not doing construction work – don’t blame the Mexicans, blame the soft society they are being raised in.

Submitted by oldbeachbear on Sun, 02/25/2007 - 7:23pm.

you never did say what you did with the extra cash that you didn't pay the government when you hired your illegals? You kind of muddled through that and glad handed people on their perceptions. ho ho. I want to go back to it....tell us all so we can tell the IRS. No one is saying we don't like Mexicans...more to the point, we don't like people like YOU that make big bucks off hiring illegals and cheating Americans, both with the house that has the high price tag on it for questionable work and the gov when the rest of us pay our fair taxes. Hey "soft" cat...tell us..or are you too busy enjoying the good life at our expense?

Great point hickory, in today's society our young adults have it too easy.

Sorry I was unaware that the illegal work force does not use drugs or alcohol. I guess with their wages they can not afford them. After listening to the news maybe we should hire them for Teachers and Principals. You seem to have some knowledge of the contstruction industry and the history of Peachtree City. Since Peachtree City was a planned community it had to built. So who do you think controlled everything. When you have one industry that controlls a town what kind of oversight do you think the local government can or will do. Maybe this is Tyrone's problem. If you have first hand knowledge of construction in Peachtree City then you know that homes have been built in places where they should never have been built. In other words they are sinking. Also builders appear to have been allowed to use inadequate framing to properly support the floor systems. However it did meet code, then. Lest we not forget poly plumbing pipe. Also met code. Cheaper and faster, the next best thing to white bread. What part of the blame did the fellow driving the nail (yes I said driving the nail not shooting it with a gun) have to do with this.
I do agree with you that reliability is an important issue in any job. I don't think the construction industry is the only one that has had employees that are unreliable. Quality work is something that all employers should expect out of their employees. I just don't know how you can get this when the majority of your work force can not read or speak English, do not know the building codes and will probably not be around when real problems occur after the homeowner moves in. Some one stated earlier that builders are paying other subs to go back to fix these problems. I was always taught to do it right the first time. Now it seems it is do it fast and cheap and we will deal with the problems later. Oh by the way the best kept secret in Peachtree City has always been a poorly built home. Remember the homeowner will want to sell some day.

How do you feel about Mexicans working on the Peachtree City roads building the new bridge? How can we punish the city for that? How do you feel about Mexican workers building the new Fayetteville Middle School? How can we punish the county for that? How do you feel about the Bank of America giving Credit Cards to Mexicans with no social security number (you and I could not get one without a SS no) How do we punish them? How do you feel about the schools allowing three different families to attend school from one single family address? (You and I could not do it) How do we punish them? I guarantee no one asks their realtors how many Mexicans worked on their house - they care they got the most square footage for their buck? I guess it just amuses me that now everyone is on the band wagon over a problem that has been here for years and one our government cares nothing about. Adios Amigos it’s my siesta time!!

Submitted by simplelife on Sun, 02/25/2007 - 5:22pm.

Thank you for asking. I don't like it at all. I try very hard to not do business with any one that I suspect of hiring illegals. I currently have a loan with Bank of America that I intend on paying off. I will not continue to give them my money. The State of Georgia passed a law last year that will go into affect July of this year that will punish any employer who hires illegal workers while working on State funded jobs. I intend on holding them to this. Also I will not vote for any one who does not put the American worker first and rewards people for violating our laws. This applies to everyone from the President of the United States to the local school board. Maybe everyone should insist on a list of laborers names as part of their realtors disclosure statement. Wouldn't that be a real eye opener.

Submitted by people4u on Sun, 02/25/2007 - 6:39pm.

Let me ask you this, what exactly do you plan to do with a list of names from the realtor, assume that a guys who's last name is Hernandez or Rodriguez is automatically an illegal? Or do you plan to check out everyone on the list, including the realtor?

If you consider me narrow minded because I know what I am talking about then I guess I will have to live with it. I hope you will be able to live with your self ten to twenty years from now.

It is not our "soft society" to blame for the college kids not having summer jobs in construction, nor the skilled craftsmen being run out. It is our "soft code inforcers" and builders/developers getting away with leading the "soft" life knowingly at the expense of the rest of us.

The same group of blow-hards who constantly want a useless fence built for 2000 miles are the same ones who absolutely refuse to arrest thes illegals. Why? They make money off them! They also know a fence is stupid. If I wanted to be in America do you think a stupid fence would stop me?
Jail the builders and planters who use them and it will stop. Jail a few and the others will understand. Until we do it won't ever stop.
You will have to forget where the contributions come from however.
Never have I seen such hypocrisy. The governor of Georgia is the worst.

Submitted by oldbeachbear on Sat, 02/24/2007 - 3:19pm.

Everyone is being done a disservice to use unskilled, cheap labor. When you pay top dollar for a house, you expect top quality work. Once it is put together, you have no way of knowing unqualified people were used till things start breaking. If a code inforcer is called, he should do his job, or be considered unskilled labor themselves!

Submitted by sackett on Sat, 02/24/2007 - 5:41pm.

You could just go around the work sites
yelling "Immigration", it would take
hours for the workers to come back to
the job site. Reference the video
of the guy in LA who goes to places
where illegals hangout, offers them
work and a ride to the job site
and he drives straight to the INS
office parking lot.
