Ever want to see a $2 billion bridge? There is one proposed across Line Creek.

The Peachtree City Council smoke generators are going full blast on TDK through a spurious lawsuit against the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority (GRTA). The ultimate purpose of the huge smoke screen is to ensure that a TDK bridge and highway get built so that Coweta County developers (and many associated business interests) can unlock thousands of acres of rural land (now used for agricultural and hunting purposes) and build at least 2 new large communities and 1 new city with a combined total value close to a staggering $2 billion!!

The land cannot be unlocked and become usable on the scale that the developers desire without a major highway system to I-85. Coweta County does not want to spend the $50 million in major highway infrastructure improvements to accommodate this new mega development, and instead would like PTC and Fayette County to assist by taking 100% of the new commuting traffic, while Coweta gets 100% of the tax revenue (what a deal for Coweta!!).

The Coweta folks currently have 3 PTC council members (Logsdon, Boone, Rutherford) working very hard to help get these mammoth projects started, and these 3 PTC council members have recently begun the City of McIntosh Trail project by dedicating the necessary TDK right-of-way to get a bridge and a 2-lane starter road into Coweta. The developers’ financial backers have required at least a bridge and a 2-lane road, knowing that once they get that, they will eventually get their 4-lane road (or 5-lane if you count the turning lane in the middle). If the developers don’t get their TDK bridge, the main project will shrivel to one-tenth the size it has been projected. Also, their new Pavilion sized retail center will never be built. Thus the developers and the Coweta County politicians have an immense amount to gain from a single bridge into Peachtree City.

In biological terms, the dedicating of the right-of-way is the actual conception. Logsdon, Boone, and Rutherford are the proud parents of this new baby. They, and they alone, are responsible for the impending traffic catastrophe and dissolution of Peachtree City as a quiet golf cart community.

Under Georgia law, GRTA is allowed to withhold state and federal transportation funds for future projects in Peachtree City if the city doesn’t comply with its requirements. After Peachtree City loses the lawsuit, the 3 council members will be able to say that they are now compelled to build a 4-lane highway and bridge. If Peachtree City “wins” the lawsuit, the 3 council members will cry yippee and say this is a green light to build a 2-lane road and bridge. All the developers want at this point is a bridge, so that their funding can be secured. This bridge is literally worth $2 billion to a handful of powerful people. If “money talks,” this amount literally SCREAMS!

These comments represent a poison that must not be allowed to contaminate the discussion or slander our elected officials. Why let the facts get in the way? It's too easy to scare the hell out people with words like "$2 Billion bridge" or pretend to know about some kind of dark conspiracy between our council members and other "evil" people. For starters, the author ignores the history of this project and commitments made prior to the terms of our council members and mayor. Honestly, how can someone come up with an actual figure of $2 billion? It defies logic. Our council members and Mayor are good honest people. Like anyone else, they may make mistakes. They do listen to the facts, look at reality, laws, prior commitments and a myriad of other variables to arrive at their decisions. Sometimes those decisions are not what some people wanted. To insinuate that they wish to destroy a place in which they have lived, raised their families and have come to love defies common sense. To insinuate that they wish to enrich themselves is a very cheap shot. The real evil in our City is represented by the lies and slander being thrown out by miserable individuals such as "Save our City". Shame on him or her. They should be horse whipped and given a lesson in manners.

Manny60 in a February 1, 2007 blog on this website concerning TDK:
For your convenience, I have capitalized some of your more relevant sections...

"Many homeowners are OUTRAGED and have formed a non profit, non partisan, organization precisely for the reasons you (Steve Brown) have mentioned. It has become NECESSARY FOR CITIZENS TO EXERCISE VIGILANCE over the CURRENT DEVELOPMENT, zoning, and trends which CONTRADICT the QUALITY OF LIFE envisioned by the original Comprehensive Plan. In fact many of us feel that THE SINGLE, BIGGEST THREAT to Peachtree City is the extension of TDK. It's nothing less than a DAGGER at this town's heart and it does not have to be built." WOW!! TDK is a DAGGER aimed at our heart? Pretty strong language, there, Mr. Manny.

Three weeks later Mr. Manny is fired up that an outraged homeowner (me) has pointed out the obvious on the nature of the TDK bridge. But because my points are so solid, Mr. Manny chooses not to debate the substance of my argument and creates a lot of red herrings. I have never said anyone is involved in a "dark conspiracy", nor have I called the developers "evil" - - I didn't even say the 3 PTC politicians in question wished to "destroy" our city. I did say THIS about their decision to dedicate the TDK right-of-way: "They, and they alone, are responsible for the impending traffic catastrophe and dissolution of Peachtree City as a quiet golf cart community."

As far as the developments reaching close to a total of $2 billion in value, this newspaper reported the total value of McIntosh Trail at build out (in today's dollars) is estimated to be about $1.5 billion - - for this one development!!! What about the other two, plus those to come??!!! Why don't you read The Citizen sometime, Mr. Manny? It's a GREAT paper!

Finally to say that our 3 politicians are "working for" the Coweta folks, this is simply a fact. This does not mean they are in league with them, nor does it mean they are getting paid, it simply means they are doing something the Coweta folks REALLY want. We currently have 3 PTC council members (Logsdon, Boone, Rutherford), who by their nonsensical support of TDK in spite of the overwhelming evidence of how it will harm PTC, are (in a practical sense) getting all of these Coweta projects off the ground. Remember how Councilman Stuart K. wanted to wait on dedicating the TDK right-of-way - these 3 were hell bent in getting that right-of-way dedicated in December regardless of the fact that it was done in a surprise meeting called at the last minute. Now we are having to sue GRTA because they are trying to tell our city what to build in that right-of-way, when if we didn't have the right-of-way, the whole point of a lawsuit would be totally moot (e.g., GRTA can't tell us how to build a project that DOESN'T EVEN EXIST).

By the hasty right-of-way dedication and by the ill-advised lawsuit, we have opened up a Pandora's Box of potential complications. What is our EXIT STRATEGY if we lose the lawsuit? Appeals? How much will this cost?

I appreciate the Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde analogy; however, it is a false analogy. Sad "SOC" (alias Save Our City) confuses my desire to keep personal attacks against our Council Members and Mayor out of the discussion about TDK with my personal opinion about TDK. It's ok to disagree about an issue but not to be disagreeable. The most casual of readers can read between the lines and would agree that Sad SOC's previous comments were emotional, personal attacks in order to make his or her point. It would have been more credible and effective to speak with these Council Members in person and report what they said or just research the Council minutes and report how each Council Member voted on each issue that came up for a vote.
My previous comments reflect my personal opinion against the TDK extension, which is actually the same as Sad SOC's opinion; however, it seems we disagree on the process. I believe it's worth listening to other people and not believing everything one reads in the paper, especially The Citizen. Be skeptical of numbers and statistics. For example, this $2 billion number (meant to cause sleepless nights in PTC): is that number based on a certain number of houses, which by the way, have not been built? This in turn begs the question of how does one know their value? Is it based on property values? If it is a property value, that $2 billion number has no meaning with regard to its economic activity or even its population.
Let's suppose that Bill Gates and Donald Trump are building two, $1 Billion dollar homes in Coweta County. If that were to be the case, then we would not have much too worry about since it would only be two property owners with some very expensive cars. The value of a property does not reflect the traffic it will generate or even the number of new schools that will be required. One only has to look at $2 billion worth of property in Silicon Valley versus $2 billion worth of property in Coweta County. Even Sad SOC would agree that there would be more homes in Coweta than in Silicon Valley because of the extreme differences in property values. Apartment homes generate more traffic but subdivisions generate more children and hence the need for more schools. Is McIntosh Village going to have homes on one acre lots or rows and rows of apartments? The only numbers that count are the cost of any bridge and the actual developer’s plans and the associated traffic studies. By the way, previous traffic studies for the TDK extension were extremely erroneous and they are a contributing factor to the headache we now have.
I do not like the idea of a TDK extension. It is a potential "dagger" at our heart and many citizens, including myself wondered what was going on. We were alarmed and many of us were worried about our City and the quality of life we have enjoyed for so many years. We wanted to ask our Council members some hard questions and that is what I would call "vigilance". Being vigilant does not call for personal attacks. Indeed, vigilance on the part of citizens is good government because our elected officials know that there are citizens who are watching them govern. At the same time, I have started to understand more about issues such as TDK after listening to people whom can speak to the facts and know its history. The idea for the TDK extension was already in traffic plans before the current council members were elected to office. Therefore, they "alone are responsible" is not an accurate statement. It is not one of Sad Sac's more "solid points".
Peachtree City does not exist in a vacuum with a moat around its perimeter. Some would say that Coweta County has not developed in the smartest way. For starters they need to spend the money and extend Hwy 154 to Interstate 85. For whatever reason, there were commitments made between Peachtree City and the State of Georgia prior to the terms of our present Mayor and Council. I sincerely believe that this Council and Mayor as well as previous Councils and Mayors have tried to do the right thing for Peachtree City. Things get complicated simply because Peachtree City also accepts money from the State of Georgia for its roads and other services. I can understand the headache our Council and Mayor find themselves in and to tell the truth, do not envy their position. I will continue to oppose the TDK extension and if it is built, I will not like it but I will understand how it came about.
Finally, it would be interesting to ask Council members Boone and Rutherford as well as Mayor Logdson if they thought of their work on our Council as "working for Coweta County". They would probably take exception to that "solid point".

The blogger "manny60" has crossed the line of civil debate, and has recommended a physically violent act ("horse whipped") and made threatening remarks directed at me ("should be...given a lesson"). What do you plan on doing about this?

Pretty good summation of what we have said. But, is it possible that those three and others not on the council, think they are really doing something great for PTC and not themselves? Could 90% of the population be wrong? It has happened before! The Romans and their Jewish Kings thought so!

You will find out why soon. Wait and see...the PTC cavalry is coming. Our town may have been betrayed by 3 council members, but the people will have their say shortly.

What Stinchcomb and the developers could not foist on Fayetteville years ago they are now accomplishing in Coweta County. SOS is right---this is all being done at the expense of PTC, who believed the big lie: "This will help alleviate traffic." This is a very sad time.
