PTC waives golf cart, alcohol rules for bike race Residents lined Peachtree Parkway with their golf carts waiting for last year’s Tour de Georgia racers to pass by

Out-of-towners will be able to bring their golf carts to Peachtree City without having to register them for the weekend of the Tour de Georgia bike race April 13 through April 16.

The City Council voted to waive those requirements for the weekend in part because race officials have said they enjoy having residents’ golf carts parked all along the route to cheer on the racers.

The city is hosting the overall start to the race this year, and officials are working on pulling all the stops to make sure everyone is welcome. That includes another council decision to allow alcohol to be served in the City Hall Plaza for a VIP event the Friday before the race.

The alcohol will not be for sale, city officials said. Although the city has regulations against the consumption of alcohol in city parks, the plaza at City Hall is not considered a city park area, noted City Attorney Ted Meeker.

The race will start at the plaza near Drake Field, running east along Ga. Highway 54 before turning to go south on Peachtree Parkway for the lion’s share of the time it’s in the city. Near the end of the parkway, the race will divert onto Robinson Road and then Redwine as it heads into the county. All told, the race’s first 15-plus miles will be in Fayette as it winds through unincorporated south Fayette County and the town of Brooks.

This is just what we need ... it's sounding more like a NASCAR event.
