Tyrone man charged with distributing child pornThu, 02/08/2007 - 11:01am
By: John Munford
A Tyrone man has been indicted for distributing child pornography and possession of “several hundred images of what appears to be alleged child pornography,” according to the U.S. Attorney’s Atlanta office. William J. Fowler, 60, of Tyrone is charged with two separate federal counts: one for distributing child pornography and another for possession of child pornography, according to U.S. Attorney David Nahmias. The distribution charge results from an incident in July when Fowler is accused of e-mailing six images of child pornography and one sexually explicit cartoon to a person in Messena, NY, Nahmias said. Federal agents searched Fowler’s home in January, confiscating his computer as evidence in the case. Fowler faces up to a $250,000 fine on each count, and a minimum sentence of five years in prison — and up to 20 years in prison — if he’s convicted on the distribution charge. The Tyrone Police Department assisted with the case along with special agents from the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The arrest was made as part of a nationwide operation called Project Safe Childhood, designed to protect children from online sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by the U.S. Attorney’s office, the effort combines federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute persons who exploit children online in addition to identifying and rescuing victims.
