Home-school student has big reading appetite

Katherine Higgins, a seven year-old home-schooler, was honored at the Fayette County Public Library for reading 2,000 books in one year.

Library director, Christine Snell, contacted the American Girl Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mattel, Inc. who was equally impressed.

The American Girl is a marketer offering gift items such as historical dolls, books, and bath and body care.

Its historical dolls encompass Kaya, a daring Nez Perce girl, Felicity and Elizabeth, spirited colonial dolls, Josefina, a hopeful New Mexican girl, Kirsten, a brave pioneer girl, Addy, a courageous girl during the Civil War, Samantha and Nellie, compassionate girls of the Victorian era, Kit, a resourceful girl during the Great Depression, and Molly and Emily, patriotic girls during World War II.

The American Girl company sent Katherine a number of posters depicting these historical dolls, as well as one of their books, and a letter of congratulations.

The Friends of the Library gave Katherine the spirited colonial doll, Felicity.

When Katherine was five, a duck took up residence in her back yard. She read books on the type of duck in residence, and wrote a story entitled "Kaley's Spring Surprise."

She often volunteers at the library and enjoys playing with her younger brother, Jonathan, age four.

Sherry Turner, who oversees the children's book department, said "Katherine has an insatiable appetite for learning everything she can. When planning a new program I always ask the children for their opinion. Katherine always has a good suggestion. She said she hopes to be a librarian one day, and how lucky we would be if that happens."

It's so nice to see real learning going on. Sometimes, when I observe my children's friends who homeschool, I think they have a much stronger love for learning. And their social skills and manners are so much better than what I usually encounter at the public schools my children attend. No, I'm not bashing all teenagers. A good many are great kids. But there are way too many who have such bad manners that it does seem to make learning difficult in the classroom. Just my personal observation.

Mom to 3 (and all of their friends, who love to hang out at my house-- LOVE THAT, almost always know where they are!!!)
