That is horrible, I didn't say I thought they were right, I think that is horrible. No one should be told they can't join any organization because of their race. Mt. Olive Baptist Church is a family based, small and what some would call, a country church. I've known many of the members there for most of my life and I am not sure what they were thinking when it was decided to do this thing. I can tell you that the negative publicity was the last thing they wanted. But I can also assure you that the members there are not the "New Black Panther Party." The church is actually a historical landmark for the county.

And by the way, it seems that it isn't just black people who live in the past, Is it?????

First of all, I usually just read these blogs but today I signed in only to respond to all this mindless back and forth that is going on. This has been going on sooo long that i even forgot what the article was about. I am a white (German/Irish) Fayetteville resident and I am offended by everyones comments. But I have to say that Beah3 did have a point when he asked what are "we" mad about. I personally saw the white faced black people and my only response when I did was to turn to my husband and say "that was in bad taste." And you are right beah3, I think I was offended because if it had been the other way around "we" would not have heard the end of it. So maybe that is the reason why so many of us are upset about it. I really wish that this conversation would not have escalated to ugly banter but it just shows me that we all have insecurities about race, and it is living in all of us. I don't however see where continually offending other races helps, we should be practicing tolerance, instead of intolerance (to whomever made the comments about the mexicans) that comment made me ashamed to be white. Also both my parents are teachers and they have been for over 30 years, my mother teaches Severally emotionally handicapped children (meaning that they are violent) and they come in all colors. I always wondered how she does it because i do not have the backbone for it. But constantly being exposed to insults is not easy to handle, she is affected by it. But she is still there, she loves kids, and unfortunately they come with their ignorant parents (of all races). Can't we just concede that there are more important things to concern ourselves with than what "one" church did or the names of two robbers. Seriously.

What you’re going to have to understand sooner or later (GIT REAL) is that I'm not on any side..... I am not speaking to you as a representative for any group of people or organization. It's just "me" here at my computer. That’s it...and that's all. My comments and my opinions are mine and mine alone, and I am not here speaking to the white race…I’m just having a conversation (as hostile as it might be) with you, and you alone. YOU ARE THE ONE who wants to lump everyone into groups and take sides...I guess it may be easier for you to deal with things that way.
But here is the draw back to that approach....when a few people; be it Mount Olive Baptist Church....be it a couple of idiot children at the school in which your wife use to work....be it the individuals on this web site who have voiced their PERSONAL OPINION on matters at hand. When you start taking the behavior of the few...and start broad stroking the entire race that those few belong to...... everything starts going to heck. I am personally guilty of doing the same thing in certain situations. Let's see if you can put emotion aside and agree that this is the ABSOLUTE TRUTH!!!!

Let us agree that WE are not going to solve the problems of race relations here on the Citizen website, and that it is going to be a collaborative effort on every ones part, and if in living our day to day lives we happen to inadvertently offend others for what ever reason….we will be quicker to address the situation appropriately, with that particular person.

As for your "If I had done this in black face would you approve?" question.... I never once alluded to approving of this float. I personally don't think that it was very well thought out or executed properly. But who cares!!! Would you have felt any better if they had some white kids on the bus in black face next to the black kids in white face??? Of course it wouldn't change your mind because then you would have to find something else to be mad about...and that could take you all weekend!!!

Your comment reminded me of a story my father--who was a South Florida cop--brought home one evening many years ago.

The cops got a tip that someone was inside a department store late at night. The K9 patrol arrived, opened a door, and let one (or two?) of their dogs--German shepherds--in first. As they were following the dogs in, they heard screaming. They rushed in to find a guy hanging from the ceiling, with a dog hanging from him.

Apparently he had managed during store hours to get himself up into the drop ceiling to hide and wait until they closed in order to burglarize the place. When the dog(s) came in, he attempted to get back up into his hiding spot. He was half way up when the dog jumped up and clamped down on the best available part of his anatomy.

Hint: it wasn't his foot.
