Traffic wrecks increased from 2005 to 2006 in Peachtree City, police said.

The most frequent violations leading to those wrecks were following too close, speeding, right-of-way and turning violations and disobeying traffic control signals, signs or devices, police said.

Although the department has four officers assigned to handle traffic crashes, accident scene can also tie up several other officers depending on the amount of traffic that needs to be directed. Those four specially trained officers of the department’s Community Response Team can reconstruct crash scenes, and they generally are assigned to areas of hazardous traffic violations or areas where the highest number of collisions occur, police said.

Through November, the intersection with the largest number of crashes in 2006 was the crossing of Ga. Highways 54 and 74, with 60 wrecks, police reported. Just to the east, Hwy. 54 and Commerce Drive came in second with 42 wrecks. Hwy. 74 and Crosstown Drive was third with 29 crashes and Hwy. 54 and Peachtree Parkway was fourth with 22 crashes.

The department also uses a speed measuring radar trailer which measures the speed of oncoming vehicles and displays it alongside a sign on the trailer denoting the speed limit for the road. That gives motorists a clear reminder of their speed in case they are unaware, police said.

Police are also developing a way for citizens to submit traffic concerns online. Meanwhile, citizens are encouraged to report them by leaving a message for patrol commander Terry Ernst or any member of the Community Response Team by calling 770-487-8866. Although they can’t respond as quickly as the department would like, a commitment is made to try and address citizens’ concerns.

The department uses computer data to track problem traffic areas and participates in other traffic enforcement programs including the operation of road safety checks and DUI and sobriety checkpoints. The department also has a child safety seat program, makes bike safety presentations and participates in the Metro Area Traffic Enforcement Network so it can share information with other Atlanta area agencies.

You have over one hundred of these wrecks right in the same area, and it's the same area that the DOT destroyed so awfully in the name of progress. It's admittedly much better now, but it was horrible for some time.

Yes, ignored traffic devices are a problem. Sometimes people ignore them, but inclusion of the 54/74 intersection and surrounding area in an article citing an increase in traffic collisions, especially when you have over 100 accidents in that specific area and the next highest area is all the way down at 29, skews the report. This report needs to have some explanation as to why the accidents are so high at that spot. It's not just because folks can't drive or disoobey traffic signals. Something else happened here.

Gee, when people argue and plead for grid-lock causing traffic lights, the argument is always that they reduce accidents.

Face it- if people will ignore stop signs, yields and rights-of-way, they will ignore traffic lights. So now we have gridlocked traffic, longer travel/commute times and the same accidents we had before.

I'd guess a goodly chunk of those accidents could be attributed to the DOT's reworking of the road out there. Everytime you went to Sharpsburg and back the lanes had changed. I know I got surprised several times on east bound 54 at 74 and the turn for Long Horns just prior to that where a lane was suddenly turn only coming over the top of the bridge and traffic was cold stopped. Thankfully my reactions are quick and I never hit any one, but I for one hated to go through there during all that.

The most frequent violations for me would be following too close(because the traffic stopped when the lane ran out suddenly) and Right of way and turn violations (where the lanes got changed from one day to the next).

Oh, Look.... The second place goes to another intersection in that mess Hwy. 54 and Commerce Drive....

Just a thought guys, but can the statistics be broken out to show the difference after the DOT left out there in August? I bet they improved a great deal.
