Teams try to get ahead of region foes in standings in Tuesday night’s games

Tuesday night’s high school basketball games featured some good region rivalry match-ups. Fayette County’s boys and girls swept Whitewater, while Landmark and Our Lady of Mercy split. Northgate’s boys and girls edged past Starr’s Mill, McIntosh’s boys and girls fell to Westlake and Sandy Creek swept past Haralson County.

The Fayette County boys (11-4, 6-1 region) defeated Whitewater (10-6, 5-3 region) 60-53. Quincy Carruthers led the Tigers with 15 points, five assists and three steals, while Marcus Fulks chipped in 12 points and Derrick Walker added 11. Jay Bright led the Wildcats with 16 points, while Zach Scurry added 13 points and eight rebounds. Stephen Sargent had eight points, eight rebounds and six blocks, while Trey Scales added nine points. The Lady Tigers defeated Whitewater 55-18. Tessa Holt scored 17 points for Fayette County and Kristene Walker added 13 points.

Fayette County will play at Starr’s Mill on Friday and Whitewater will host Banneker.
Starr’s Mill’s Lady Panthers (6-10, 2-5 region) fell to Northgate 38-35. Starr’s Mill led 16-15 at the half and entered the fourth quarter tied with Northgate, but the Lady Vikings (5-6, 3-4 region) ran up a 10 point lead. The Lady Panthers charged back but came up short.
Northgate’s Stephanie Farmakis scored 13 points and Natalie Pluskota added eight.

The boys game saw Northgate build a sizable lead in the third quarter but the Panthers (1-15, 0-7 region) fought back, cutting the lead to one point with seconds to go. The Vikings (3-9, 1-6 region) hit their free throws though and sealed their 40-37 win. Andre Morris scored 11 points for Northgate, while Jordan Jones scored 10 for the Panthers. Paul Vogel added nine points for Starr’s Mill and Remy Williams added seven.
Northgate will host McIntosh tonight.

McIntosh’s boys and girls faced Westlake on Tuesday. The boys (5-9, 2-6 region) lost 60-44. Patrick Michel scored 11 points for the Chiefs, while Jeremy Lampkin added eight. The Lady Chiefs (9-5, 4-4 region) fell to the Lady Lions (13-2, 7-0) in a close contest 39-37. Elyse Chubb led McIntosh with 14 points.

McIntosh will play at Sandy Creek tomorrow.
Sandy Creek’s boys (9-4, 3-2 region) handed Haralson County a 57-44 loss. The Lady Patriots (11-2, 4-1 region) beat Haralson County 53-22. Sandy Creek will host Central, Carroll tonight before tomorrow’s game with McIntosh.

Landmark Christian hosted Our Lady of Mercy on Tuesday. The Lady War Eagles (14-2, 3-1) won 52-28. The Lady Bobcats committed 35 turnovers and managed only one offensive rebound in the loss. For Landmark, Christian Hunnicutt scored 20 points and Diamond Hunnicutt added 11. Raven Moore led Mercy with 11 points and four steals.
In the boys game, Landmark (2-12, 0-3 region) had a 23-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 39-27 lead at the half, but the Bobcats wouldn’t go away. They made a basket and were fouled with seconds remaining. After making the free throw, the game was tied and the teams went into overtime. The Bobcats (11-3, 2-2 region) won 88-80. Leading scorers were Nnamdi Moh and Richie Obiora with 17 each Robert Caruso with 15 and Nick Hood with 13.

Our Lady of Mercy will play at W.D. Mohammed tonight and will host Greenforest Christian tomorrow.

I would just like to encourage the Panthers to continue to work hard.

I was equally impressed this football season with the McIntosh football team and their determination and pride.

Athletes on teams in this position really learn valuable lessons, sometimes more valuable than players on winning teams.

Remember, "It’s not whether you win or lose its how you play the game that matters"!
