Best Movies Recommendations

Richard Hobbs's picture

I thought I'd take our occasional and good hearted debate down a notch or two.

I enjoy movies and wondered what you would recommend as being some of your favorites.
I can't think of all of the great movies I've enjoyed, so I'll break them down as I can remember in a couple of categories. I look forward to hearing some of your favorites. Perhaps I might not have to guess when I go to the movie rental store this weekend.

Comedies.
Oh Brother where art thou?
You've got to watch this one more than once to get it.
There's Something about Mary.
Just can't stop laughing
Bull Durham,
Purity of the game, with a grin on your chin.
True Lies.
The best James Bond style movie. I wish we could have a sequel.
Forest Gump.

Drama
Stand by Me.
Growing up, really reminds me of being a kid.
Field of Dreams.
Baseball at its finest and purest.
Master and Commander, the Far Side of the World.
Terrific British warship movie.
To Kill a Mockingbird.
My dog's name is Atticus. Oh, and Harper Lee never wrote the book.

Feel Good Movies.
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington.
Its a Wonderful Life. Heck anything with Capra and Jimmy Stewart.
Mr. Holland's Opus
Dead Poets Society. Carpe Diem

Great Movies that I can't watch again or I do so with careful consideration.
Saving Private Ryan.
Band of Brothers.

Movies that I can't understand why they are supposed to be good.
Citizen Kane

Great Movies I've never seen
Godfather

Movies my kids love, and that I secretly enjoy.
Nemo,
Toy Story
The Incredibles

Great Movies that I loved but I can't categorize exactly.
Lord of the Rings
Jaws.
ET
Poltergeist
Indiana Jones but 2 and 3 not so good.
Star Wars, just because.
Rocky most of them.
Casino Royal, best Bond Movie ever.
Ishtar
Matrix
Monty Python-Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries

What I'd highly Recommend?

Band of Brothers,
Master and Commanders
True Lies
Lord of the Rings,
Oh Brother Where Art Though

What do you recommend I rent this weekend? I look forward to reading about what others think I've missed.

Here is one you seem to have missed: "Liar, Liar."

Here are a couple of ideas: Borat,(not for kids) it might not be out on DVD yet, Failure to Launch, The Devil Wears Prada, Dreamer, March of the Penguins and Eight Below. For older Movies try Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Pay it Forward, Forest Gump, Fried Green Tomatos, and Driving Miss Daisy.

favor. Read Midnight in the Garden. The movie, as usual, cannot hold a candle to the book.

Nothing artsy fartsy in my list. Here goes:

Shadowlands. Anthony Hopkins, Deborah Winger. Drama about C.S. Lewis and his marriage to Joy Davidman, who, soon after, fell victim to cancer. This movie appeared the same season as Schindler's List and was thus effectively eclipsed. Otherwise, it would likely have been nominated for Academy Awards. Great stuff, though Lewis experts point out that it takes many liberties.

Jeremiah Johnson. Robert Redford, Will Geer. One of my all-time favorite movies about a Civil War veteran who becomes a mountain man and takes on the Crows Indians--one brave at a time.

Top Secret. Val Kilmer. From the same people who brought us the Airplane movies. Utterly bizarre sense of humor, with lots of crazy sight gags.

Serendipity. John Cusack, really, really cute Brit girl. I know this is kind of a "chick flick." But I really like the "atmosphere" and pace. Great soundtrack. Very upbeat with lots of funny moments.

Better Off Dead. 80s John Cusack movie. Also stars David Ogden Stiers. Some dark humor about a suicidal teen with an insane family. Classic line: "Damn shame to throw away a perfectly good white boy."

Sleepless in Seattle. Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan. Another chick flick, I know. (I guess I'm in touch with my feminine side.) But, again, I love the atmosphere and pace of this movie, and have come to think of it in conjunction with Serendipity for similar reasons.

Joe Versus the Volcano Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, Meg Ryan again. One of his best, I think. Offbeat humor. Convinced that he has a terminal disease ("brain cloud") he is persuaded to travel to a Pacific Island and jump into a volcano as a human sacrifice to the Big Wu (which subsequently became the name for a popular jam band in the Grateful Dead/Phish genre).

Forget Paris. Billy Crystal, Deborah Winger. (I would list Crystal's City Slickers--it's fantastic--but it's too obvious.)

All of Me Steve Martin, Lilly Tomlin. Lilly Tomlin's spirit winds up sharing Steve Martin's body with him. Some of his best comedic acting. (I'm a huge Steve Martin fan and would otherwise list everything he's ever done.)

Tootsie. Dustin Hoffman. Hoffman can play any role whatsoever. Classic line: "I was a better man with you as a woman than I ever was with a woman as a man."

Little Big Man. Dustin Hoffman again.

The Longest Day. John Wayne and everyone else you can think of. Classic story of D-Day.

Pride of the Yankees. Gary Cooper. The Lou Gehrig story. Babe Ruth plays himself! Fantastic story. I cry every time (that feminine side again?).

Finally, an A&E series that noone seems to know about:

Jeeves and Wooster. This is the A&E adaptation of P.G. Wodehouse's many novels about the eccentric Bertie Wooster and his butler, Jeeves. Absolutely bust-your-gut funny. Starring Hugh Laurie as Bertie and Stephen Frye as Jeeves. You need to see these. We've purchased the entire set of several seasons and have watched them over and over.

There have to be more, but I'll stop here.

I was late coming into the whole Godfather thing too. In fact, I hadn't seen the whole thing start to finish until after I read the book a few years ago. It is awesome. Seriously. You'll love it. And then you'll understand all of these jokes in other films and tv shows.
