Contractors plan to start Wednesday on the demolition and replacement of a bridge on Ga. Highway 85 north of Fayetteville.

Because of the work, northbound traffic at the Morning Creek bridge will be routed onto the southbound bridge, according to officials with the Georgia Department of Transportation. That could lead to traffic slowdowns during peak traffic times, as the southbound bridge will be limited to one lane of traffic in each direction.

The project is expected to take more than nine months and possibly longer if weather or other unforeseen delays occur, officials said.

The DOT asks motorists to use extreme caution when driving through this work zone.

“We request your patience and cooperation, and apologize for inconveniences caused by our work,” said Barry Hancock, DOT communications specialist. “We realize that traffic interruptions are not welcomed, but to improve our roadways, construction and maintenance are necessary.”

Motorists can get information on traffic interruptions by calling 404-635-6800 or visit www.georgia-navigator.com.

I have watched the ongoing construction on the bridge for almost a year. When topping the hill at the Pavillion intersection and looking northward, the northbound detour lane is easily visible. Common sense led me to realize that the northbound bridge would be improved. The problem I perceive is that the commuting public may decide to use the alternate route of traveling from Hwy.54 to Hwy. 85 by way of Corinth Road . Perhaps commuters will travel 314 N. and then follow Kenwood Road to Hwy. 85 N. Either way, both of these residential streets will be used as major thoroughfares.
