Brown’s Ga. Trend award resulted from a ‘sham’Tue, 11/22/2005 - 4:52pm

If you go on to Steve Brown’s Web site, you will find among a section he calls Steve’s bio. It tells a good bit of information about Brown and includes a couple of accolades he is evidently proud of. I’ll let you in on a little secret. At least one of them is a total sham. Not long after Steve Brown got elected, he showed up at my doorstep unannounced with a “favor” to ask me. It seemed that Brown had gotten wind of Georgia Trend Magazine’s “40 under 40” campaign in which certain movers and shakers under 40 years old are nominated for being recognized as the up and coming leaders in the state. If you guessed that Brown asked me to write something to the magazine nominating him, you’re close but you’re wrong. It’s worse. Steve Brown actually showed up with a nomination for himself for this accolade that he himself penned. Yes, the not so noble “I love being your mayor” Steve Brown was — imagine this — busy drumming up support for himself even way back then. He tried to beat the system, which was intended for genuine up and coming leaders of Georgia to be nominated as such by others who felt they were worthy of such distinguished recognition. He just didn’t think he’d ever get caught. So Brown asked me to put my name on his letter and fax it to Georgia Trend magazine on my home fax machine. At the time, I said, “Oh, what the heck,” and sent it in for him. Of course, this was a dumb mistake on my part, and I regret going along with the sham, but at the time I was fooled by Brown, like a lot of other people have been since then. In light of the importance of the impending mayor runoff election on Dec. 6, I thought it was probably high time this dirty little secret came out from hiding. This kind of underhanded self serving act speaks volumes about Brown’s credibility or lack thereof in his re-election bid. I urge you to turn away an ethically challenged Steve Brown on Dec. 6 and help bring in real leadership and real honesty in the mayor’s office. Dan Tennant Tennant was a candidate in the Nov. 8 city election for mayor. He has endorsed Harold Logsdon in the runoff election. login to post comments |
