Fire breaks out at TDK warehouseThu, 01/04/2007 - 11:30am

A broken light fixture reportedly started a fire Thursday morning at the TDK warehouse off Ga. Highway 74 in Peachtree City, officials said. Stacks of tapes and CDs in the warehouse caught fire, and the building’s sprinkler system was activated to help quell the flames, said Fire Chief Stony Lohr. The incident happened around 8:30 a.m. and no injuries were reported. Fire crews remained on the scene at 4 p.m., fighting flare-ups that happened as they tried to remove the damaged product from the scene, said Peachtree City spokesperson Betsy Tyler. About 30 employees were working at the time of the fire and all evacuated the building with no problem, according to Tyler. Fire crews were initially unable to enter because of the presence of heavy smoke, but it eventually cleared enough to allow entry, officials said. Firefighters had punched three holes in the roof to help remove the smoke, and it took a while to shut off the sprinkler system so crews could evaluate the situation. After 11 a.m., crews were working to extinguish hot spots, with the fire well under control, Lohr said. Water from the sprinkler system was infiltrating the radios of some firefighters, causing them to have slight communication problems. Backup radios were on hand and used as necessary. The stacks of tapes and CDs that caught fire were about 18-20 feet tall, Lohr said. Numerous Peachtree City fire units worked the fire along with crews from the Fayette County and Fairburn fire departments. — Staff writer John Munford contributed to this story login to post comments |
