In a move that left many in the audience with a stunned expression on their faces, the Fayette County Commission unanimously elected Jack Smith as chairman.

Smith was elected after Commissioner Eric Maxwell's nomination of Herb Frady did not receive a second. Commissioner Peter Pfeifer nominated Smith and he received a second from Commissioner Robert Horgan.

The vote was unanimous and the rest of the meeting was dominated by a nearly 90 minute executive session. Prior to going into the session to discuss four legal items, Smith said the commission would return from the discussions and take any votes in public.

But when the board reconvened, Smith said the discussions were more of a briefing and no action was taken. Sheriff Randall Johnson stayed for the session, but quickly left the room when no votes were held.

From all I know and have learned you seem to be an honorable and decent man with much integrity. Please oh please oh please remain that way. Wow....maybe Peter has come to his senses since the puppet strings controlled by Greg had been severed. Perhaps this commission will not be polarized and much can be accomplished in preserving balanced and controlled growth along with maintaining and improving our already good public safety infrastructure. Good luck to our new commission.

The chairman should be someone who is free of ego and has the ability to listen, negotiate and preside over the meetings. Jack is that person. He will lead the commission professionally and properly. I don't believe any of the others could be as effective as I'm sure he will be.

Don't know why anyone should be "stunned" in the audience, it was obviously pre-arranged and properly so. Frady may seem like the obvious choice because of senority, but apparently no one on the commission thought so. Maxwell was the only other sensible choice, but he knows he's a lighning rod because of his support of (and by) Randall. He's probably the pre-arranger and if so - good job Eric!

Good luck to the new guard.
