Change is the name of new Fayette commissionTue, 01/02/2007 - 5:59pm
By: John Thompson
As a large crowd of family and friends looked on, Eric Maxwell was sworn in Friday as a new Fayette County commissioner. Maxwell, along with new Commissioner Jack Smith who was sworn in yesterday, will dramatically change the face of the County Commission. Former commissioners Greg Dunn and Linda Wells, along with current Commissioner Peter Pfeifer, often represented a voting bloc that won on many votes. But with Wells and Dunn gone, the power on the board could shift to Commissioners Herb Frady and Robert Horgan, who opposed many items backed by the former commissioners. Frady, a former councilman and mayor from Peachtree City, could end up as chairman of the new commission. Horgan was elected last spring to fill the unexpired term of A.G. VanLandingham, who died of cancer. Maxwell was buoyed by the supporters who came out to support him during the swearing-in ceremony and told everyone to make sure he stays on track. He said that he had recently attended training in Athens for new county commissioners and one of the lessons he learned was “you don’t have to have a revolution in your first week in office.” He did say that many members of the new commission want to see the numerous lawsuit issues settled with the sheriff, and said he was ready to start serving the public. Maxwell will get his chance today at the commission’s first meeting of the new year. The main items on the agenda are the election of a chairman and vice chairman. The meeting starts at 3:30 p.m. login to post comments |
