Suspects scrutinized in Braelinn auto break-ins

Peachtree City police believe a group of people may be behind the break-in of several cars last week at the Braelinn Golf Club.

It is believed that several men committed the break-ins but the checks were cashed by two women involved in the scheme, said Police Chief James Murray.

A video recording from a bank in McDonough shows two women cashing one of the checks taken in the theft, Murray said. The women wrote out one of the stolen checks and then used the ID of another victim to cash the check using the bank’s drive-through, Murray said.

In the video, the women generally avoided looking directly at the teller by speaking on a cell phone or fiddling with their purse, Murray said.

Another of the checks was cashed at a bank in DeKalb County, and one of the pocketbooks was found in Marietta.

“They’re all over the place,” Murray said.

One of the women wore a wig while cashing the check and both times they used the same car, Murray said.

Police have some out-of-town areas under surveillance after identifying a potential suspect, Murray said. Peachtree City has also sought information from other area law enforcement agencies to see if they have had similar “entering auto” cases, but most of that information has been slow in coming, Murray said.

“We’ll catch them,” Murray said. “It’s going to take a little time, but we’ll catch them.”

The thieves likely used a “punch” device that quickly shatters windows, Murray said. They also struck SUVs and vans which don’t have separate trunks, he said.

“They were able to do it very quickly,” Murray noted.

Whew, and just when I was thinking my yellow lab might have been one of those involved!

Way to go Chief Murray!

... like it's almost ALWAYS "a group of people" that are involved in criminal activity.

I think an argument for profiling would be appropriate here.

You will not believe this but I caught my cat filling out my checks and taking them to the bank and cashing them while I was at work. Seems he wanted cat toys I would not get him. I am sure Mr. Munford will research this question and decide if my cat or your lab was park of this caper. Wonder if they were also "packing heat".

An old Steve Martin monologue is about catching his cat embezzling from him. He found over $3000.00 worth of cat toys! And you can't take them back because they have SPIT all over them....

Is this your muse?
