The Curmudgeons of Peachtree CityThis is more stream-of-consciousness, so forgive any tangents...some food for thought and detailed analysis by the experts on this site regarding recent Peachtree City political goings on: - There appear to be maybe 8 or 9 folks on this website that contribute semi-regularly. If you go to the Citizen's companion site, www.fayettespeaks.com, you get about maybe 5 or 6 more. So there are around 20 "posters" that seem to have opinions about the goings. They keep repeating the same things over and over again... - The mayor, city manager, one particular council member and probably every developer in town are reportedly regulars at local bars - All these people reportedly get together and decide everything at these local bars and then go into their offices and arrange hastily called meetings to "officially" push things through. - All these people reportedly don't take ANY public input whatsoever, don't do any research or analysis, don't look at long term statistical trends or consider any other factors other than their own self interests. - The political "machine" of Peachtree City reportedly are completely against all City employees and do whatever they can to break the backs of those who keep us safe, clean and enjoying our town. These are the sterotypical whinings of a minority of individuals who perform a function in every town, regardless of size, demographics, or affluence. These are the Curmudgeons of Peachtree City. It wouldn't matter if the City government did everything that they wanted, they'd complain that it wasn't done the "right" way. They come of all manners of private industry with their "successes", calling for the "ethical" and "moral" and "just" answers to the problems before them. Whose morality do you choose? What are the common standards that we go by? Have you ever tried to please everybody? It's impossible. But don't tell it to these folks - they can solve every problem in the world, do it without raising taxes or making any employees upset, and make sure that someone knocked on everybody's door to tell them about it. The curmudgeons live with psychoses instead of understanding the whole, and they have no problem belittling anyone who might have a contrary opinion or ask the other side to consider introspection before lashing out. I watched "It's a Wonderful Life" last night on TV. Bedford Falls is just like Peachtree City - a idyllic little town where everybody knows everybody else, all the folks are friendly, well - except the nasty bankers who are buying up everything and turning it all into "Potterville", where wine, women and song will run rampant. I honestly believe that there are people that spend their lives thinking that all the bankers, developers and builders of the world are all Mr. Potters, looking to just get everything they can at the expense of the "little man". I might be naive, but I don't believe that to be the case here. Life is NOT like Bedford Falls. Peachtree City is a "big town" that was previously run with "small town" ideals. The return to the days when Hudson's and Hi-Brand foods were the landmarks are gone. Development is here, and it's also right next door. Curtailing growth is not the answer anymore - it's time to manage growth to the best that the City can with the outside influences coming down on it. Stop using this newspaper, or, worse yet, this website to be your only source of news. If something bothers you , CALL CITY HALL at 770-487-7657 and ask someone about it. Believe it or not, I bet you'll find the staff, INCLUDING the mayor, council and city manager, is more than willing to help you. Try to understand ALL the interests that go into keeping a city of 35,000 (and more) moving every day. If you think that the police aren't getting paid what they should, tell your City Council you want your taxes raised so that the quality of life you hold so dear remains as it was when you moved here. Stop calling the politicians crooks and liars and drunks unless you actually have proof, and if you do, then do something other than sit behind your keyboard and lob merciless assaults that do nothing than hurt humans who are doing the best they can every day.
