DOT urges alternate routes; work starts at 9 a.m.

If you plan to drive north through Fayetteville Thursday morning, expect some delays due to work that will be performed at the intersection of Ga. Highways 85 and 314.

At times, traffic will be stopped in all directions as crews will be working on maintenance of the traffic signal system, according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Fayetteville Police will also be on hand at the scene, the DOT said.

The delays will begin at 9 a.m. and last throughout the day, the DOT indicated. Because the lane closures will occur at random, the DOT is asking motorists to use alternate routes to reduce delays and minimize convenience.

I didn't go to J-school in Athens (if I had I probably would have a degree from there) but the game is still the 5 W's. I think one of your reporters went to Auburn, so he may be un-teachable.

The writing for this paper is going from bad to worse. "At random"? In case you are not aware, random, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, means "proceeding, made, or occurring without definite aim, reason, or pattern" or "in a haphazard way". The work may, in fact, turn out to be haphazard, but seeing as there is a set start time and a specific location and task at hand, the job is not random. Even your description of lane closures as random is incorrect. Unless the crews plan to step into the road, close lanes on a whim, and then reopen them with no rhyme or reason, then I would hesitate to use such imprecise language. Let's put more thought into our word choice next time, guys. I realize this isn’t the New York Times, but you should still write like professionals.

Is this “Fayette County Municipal Judge James A. White” or an imposter?

Which word would you have chosen?

The bottom line is they don't know EXACTLY when they will be closing the roads in all directions. Apparently it will depend on the conditions they find in the work they will do.

Under the definition you described as random being without a pattern, then I argue that the word is the best choice. However I'm curious to see what word YOU would use.

Personally, I think I'd have used the word "intermittently" but I understand why you didn't use it: the same demographic that drools over the Ann Coulter picture on Friday has trouble with words over two syllables. Additionally, certain bloggers would criticize the article as having nothing to do with mittens.

Some of the people on here are critical of everything that's written,
how it's written....etc. etc.

You and Ben are good reporters. Michael Boylan has written good sport reports too!

Instead of cramming and jamming up 85...how about doing this maintenance at 11 pm to 6 am? Huh?

Good lord...get a clue DOT!
