3 new firefighters off PTC’s agenda

Peachtree City officials have scrapped a planned discussion for Thursday night’s City Council meeting about hiring three additional firefighters.

Officials had proposed hiring the three additional firefighters using the matching funds set aside in the budget for that potential grant.

At the request of Councilwoman Judi-ann Rutherford, staff has calculated that with the $120,000 set aside for the grant, the city could hire three additional firefighters for eight months of the budget year.

The city currently has 14 firefighters on duty on each shift covering four stations in the city. Those firefighters also provide emergency medical services.

The fire department had recommended that the city hire two firefighter/EMT intermediate positions and one firefighter/paramedic if council authorized the positions.

Remaining on the council’s agenda are the following:

• Awarding a $228,000 bid to Allan Vigil Ford for 11 police pursuit cars. Vigil was the lowest bidder by $355 for the entire contract price. The vehicles are necessary to replace patrol cars that have exceeded 100,000 miles, according to Police Chief James Murray.

• Awarding a $63,000 contract for street sweeping services to Rhino Services of Palmetto; the service is needed for its storm sewer system.

• Purchasing software for electronic forms for the police department. The $62,000 package will allow officers to complete forms in the field on their mobile computer terminals instead of at the police department’s fixed terminals. The company, USA Software, was selected because other software packages would be more expensive to program and would be more prone to incompatibility with the department’s existing system.

• Entering an agreement with a firm to collect approximately 650 unpaid residential stormwater bills. The firm, Revenue Discovery Systems, will charge a 27 percent fee of the unpaid amount that will be added to each customer’s total bill. The accounts would be turned over to the firm in January, according to the recommendation from city staff.

Do we have more criminals to pay off? Is that the reason we are not hiring the 3 firefighters? Where is the money going? What about the matching funds?

Did the group of dumb and dumber build something else to ....ummm...."help us"?

So they are not going to give a reason... any reason... for why this was removed from the agenda? Did the city get smaller and suddenly not need the 3? Or was the money needed elsewhere, like covering a $1million jump in the budget?
