Tyrone’s search for a new police chief could end soon.

Town manager Barry Amos said the town had been “flooded” with applications and is slowly going through the stack.

“I think half the state of Florida applied for this job,” he said.

Amos has also received applications from Ohio and Kentucky, and said most of the applicants are very qualified for the position.

“Unfortunately, we can’t pay them what they are making now,” Amos said.

He also confirmed that Fayette County’s former top cop, Bruce Jordan, did not apply for the position.

In October, the Mayor and Town Council appointed William David Mullis to serve as acting Chief of Police during their search for a new chief. Captain Mullis has been employed by the Town in the Police Department for the past ten years in various capacities. Captain Mullis will continue to serve in this capacity until appointment of a permanent chief.

Tyrone’s former chief, Johnny hay, retired this year after numerous years in law enforcement.

Tyrone's best bet would be to promote from within. I certainly hope that either Interim Chief David Mullis or Major Van Brock applied. Either of those two would serve the City well, as they have done already for a number of years.

Tyrone can't pay the new Chief a higher wage. What a joke. They have the highest millage rate in the county. Also with all the money they rake in from the illegal No Thru traffic ordinance for driving through Ashland Trail, they should more than be able to fund a higher paying police Chief.
