Starr's Mill returns to state quarterfinals

The Starr's Mill Panthers got another great road playoff win on Friday night, this time defeating Baldwin 19-14. Brandon Witta had two touchdowns and a blocked field goal in the victory. The win sends the Panthers (9-3) to East Paulding (11-1) next Friday. East Paulding beat Rome 27-3 this week. The winner of this game will be the home team when they meet the winner of the Creekside/Marist game in the Georgia Dome the following week.

Landmark Christian (9-3) saw their season come to an end at the hands of the Warren County Screaming Devils on Friday. The first half was an offensive shootout with the teams trading huge touchdown runs and plays, but the second half was a defensive battle and Warren County was able to make some big stops, particularly on a final drive after Landmark forced the first Screaming Devil turnover with only a few minutes left on the clock. Landmark couldn't convert a fourth down on their final drive and Warren County ran out the clock for the win.

See Wednesday's paper for a more detailed account of both games.

I enjoy most of the comments made on the sports scene. However, a few (notice that I didn't say "all") of the Starr's Mill rowdies are vicious and bad sports.

Steve Brown chose the other team to win and you would have thought he burned the high school down. I know he picked Starr's Mill a couple of times in the past when they ended up losing.

A blogger made a comparison between Whitewater and Starr's Mill a week ago and some of the Starr's Mill folks went after him like a pack of rabid dogs. Why?

For starters, it's just a game darn it! What a bad example you set for your own children. The nastiness has actually got some folks hoping that Starr's Mill will be defeated next time.

The redistricting mess from the FCBOE is going to really screw-up any chances that McIntosh had of making a comeback in the future and that will make things less competitive in Fayette County. This might be a good battle for the disgruntled Starr's Mill parents who need something to rant about.

Interesting that the only bad apples you mention are at Starr's Mill..... tells anyone that reads this blog all they need to know.

A Starr's MIll Kid Painted the road to WHS with a single can of temporary blue paint - not good - bad idea.

Whitewater kids (and parents like you) - have tee shirts that say "Only Real Cats in Town" insulting the Tigers and Panthers, "Kings of the County" Even though you were beaten by Sandy Creek, "Priceless" (over the one game you attempt to trivialize as a single game - Starr's Mill's point precisely). Paint the storage building at Starr's Mill with permanant paint, Paint the Rocks at Starr's Mill with sexual genatalia, Have a Gym wall that proclaims you are "The Only Real Cat in Town", have screen savers that taunt the only team in the county to succeed in the playoffs that proclaim WHS's one point win is "Priceless" while making fun of the boosters that raised money at Starr's Mill, you have GHSA violations (3), YOU HAVE FOOTBALL PLAYERS OUT OF DISTRICT, etc., etc., etc., and yet - the only school with a "few bad apples" in the barrel is Starr's Mill. Wow.

You sir, make the point for the rest of us in the county. We may be 0-10 but we do it with class, we do it with OUR students, we do it with the same kids that lead the county in test scores. We will beat you in plenty and when we do, we will win with class. You, on the other hand, will continue to hang on to taunting, making fun of others, recruiting and failure to recognize that until you arrived on the scene, Fayette County was always highly regarded on blogs and in newspapers. Now, I read incident and incident about your poor sportsmanship and failure to show class and sportsmanship. You lash out at those who call you on it rather than to address the problem at it's source - your school, the administration and the parents.

Brunswick has their own version of priceless - I think you should see it.

Think you might find your way to Dallas Ga. friday night to watch the SM/EP game. Landmark is not playing kiddie football or is there an underwater basket weaving match at WW, or is the SC debate team having a bake sale you have to cover. Come on over and check out the game and maybe even bring your Kodak insta-matic along to get a picture. Just a thought....

You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar.

Good chance I'll be there, but you don't know me or my situation. You and all bloggers should think before you rant mindlessly on someone. You never know what lies behind a person's actions and there is a good chance you could be speaking well out of turn.

You will never please everyone...don't try!

Good luck to you and all Citizen reporters.

Congratulations Starr's Mill!

My children are...a Ga. Dawg...a Ga. Tech...and a Fla. Gator!

As their Mom, what do I do?
My favorite is one of the above, but I try to keep the peace! Smiling

One of my children was NOT happy yesterday! One of them was celebrating, and the other one was working!

Today, all three of them are at the Falcons game, tailgating, and watching the Falcons win!

All of us are Falcon fans!

Teach them to lose with dignity and to win graciously.

Teach them to support their team without belittling the other team.

Teach them that a rising tide lifts all ships and to support those who beat you.

Teach them to look the opposition in the eye and shake their hands after the game the same whether they win or lose.

That would mean:

No negative screensavers
No 'Priceless' T shirts
No vandalism

It is not only bad sportsmanship, it might come back to bite them in the butt - like WHS. I have seen a very tacky, but somewhat understandable, 'Priceless' Powerpoint featuring Brunswick and Whitewater.

Congratulations the Starr's Mill High School for back-to-back quarter finals in the football playoffs.

We look forward to playing Starr's Mill again next year - Go Chiefs!

That could apply to all of us.

My children are in their 30's, love football and most other sports. One of them graduated from McIntosh.

I hope we taught them well. I'm very proud of all three. They have a "friendly rivalry." They just banter back and forth. They really are good sports. I stay neutral when they banter. Mom's aren't supposed to take sides, right?

Can't you just imagine though...when Georgia plays the Gators...and yesterday Georgia Tech? It's a hoot! Smiling All three are supporting Georgia Tech and the Gators in the championship games next Saturday. They plan to watch the games together! You think we raised them right? Smiling

All of us are Falcon fans. They lost the game today, but we still stand behind them. We are not "fair weather fans."

We support all of the Fayette County school teams when they are in championship or play-off games.

Two of my grandchildren attend FCHS, so of course we support them!

I don't know anything about the Whitewater controversy. I can't comment on that, except to say it doesn't sound like good sportmanship, somewhere.

One of my sons, coaches Rec ball. Some of the parents are unbelieveable! I know that first hand.

You must have quite the rowdy bunch there on Saturdays! It does indeed sound as though you have taught them well, and lord knows, that's a job that never stops.

I see our little discussion brought out all of the "Whitewater tee shirt" moms and dads. That was not my intent. Thank you for seeing the true message - I am sorry that others chose to make it in to something else.

Best of luck this holiday season to you and yours! Looks like bowl games and finger foods are in your future!

P.S. We support the Patriots and we also support your Fayette County Tigers - so best of luck to your grandchildren!

Thanks for your kind words! You must be a really good person.
Sorry my comments opened a can of worms...

When all the kids are here watching football I know that everyone in the neighborhood can hear them! I told them not to be so loud or one of the neighbors might call the police! Smiling When their Dad was here, he was right in there with them! It's all just fun rivalry. They support each other.

Saturday, when Ga. Tech and the Gators play their games, all of them will be in Coweta county at one of my sons home! All three will be cheering for Tech and Gators. (that's what the Dawg tells me anyway) My grandaughter and I plan to stay here. We just might watch a good movie and check the scores. Smiling

Good luck to you and yours also! Have a great Christmas!

I tell you, there is only so much of this a person can take. How much mileage do you intend to get out of WHS?

You want to talk about class, but you continue to harp on a dead issue that no one else seems to care about, it’s history! You have no affiliation with Starr’s Mill but you are making them look bad with this stupidity. There are many BAD things that happened at SM this year with players and students that I won’t bring up, that’s old news and so are your blogs.

There are many bloggers I can disagree with here and doing so with respect; but you are beyond ridiculous. The headline is about Starr’s Mill victory and that’s it; not you disdain towards WHS. You want to preach class, start by setting the example.

Show some of the class that you are talking about and leave the WHS issue alone, what’s important now is the make sure SM continues their winning ways and as a WHS parent, I wish them the best!

P.S. When did you jump on the SM bandwagon? It’s funny how I did not see you post anything until they made the playoffs!!!

Submitted by lifelongfayette... on Sun, 11/26/2006 - 7:48pm.

I continue to read negative comments about Whitewater regarding vandalism. I agree Whitewater showed poor class and sportsmanship when they vandalized the building at SMHS, but I wanted to make sure the truth was known. The vandalism at SMHS was done in retaliation to the initial vandalism done at WHS. Whitewater's campus was vandalized first, by sore loosers from SMHS. This did not make it right and just showed both teams are more alike than either would like to admit! When it is all said and done, both sides were examples of HOW NOT TO ACT: SMHS by crying about bad calls and either trying to or succeeding in getting referees fired, and WHS by bragging and showing off with poor taste in t-shirts. Bottom line, these teams are first and foremost Fayette County, and this should be the first thing that is recognized. And, a reminder to the adults who joined in on the poor sportsmanship bandwagon-Do you ever wonder where your kids get it from?

Submitted by Enigma on Sun, 11/26/2006 - 8:17pm.

Gee lifelongfayette good lesson there - it's okay since Starr's Mill painted the county owned road with temporary paint to paint a privately purchased wooden building on another campus - oh and then paint the 'rocks' too - good call. Great lesson for the kids.

Just two or three other problems: What about the tee shirts and screensavers? Care to explain that? What about your gym wall slogan?

Again you bring up the "they did it too" - spoken like a true WHS parent.

Should we compile a list to see who's is longest? The Brunswick fans have developed a "Priceless" powerpoint of their own because of the way they were treated here in Fayette County - just great - what did they do not to have their hands shaken?

Yes, Starr's Mill painted the road at Whitewater with some temporary field paint - regardless of whether it was before or after Whitewater painted the building at Starr's Mill doesn't matter - It was wrong - it was poor sportsmanship and it was highly unusual for a school with a state wide reputation that is above reproach.

What did Starr's Mill do about the WHS Tee shirts (King of the County 0 uh- Sandy Creek and the "Only Real Cats" and the "Priceless"? What did Starr's Mill do about the screensavers on county owned computers?

When have you read anything on the blogs about the Starr's Mill fans? I have read a lot about Whitewater - have you?

But, you are right - you are setting a good example - you can point to one thing and that's good enough for you to justify 'retaliation'. No wonder the other teams hate the WHS fans so much.

As for the officials that were repremanded - by their own association for bad calls - what does that have to do with the intentionaly made and worn tee shirts, gym walls that proclaim other cats are "not real", and screensavers on county school computers?

We haven't even talked about out of district players and GHSA violations - like illegally filming and recruiting - do you want to blame Starr's Mill for that too?

Again - back to the subject at hand - Starr's Mill is in the elite eight and the quarter finals once again. We wish them luck. They win with class and lose with class.

I became a Starr's Mill fan when they took a knee early in the game to keep from embarassing us - unlike WHS.

Go Chiefs!

First, may I suggest a chill pill (and possibly a life)? You obviously did not read my entire post because you would have thought I only blasted SMHS. Did I say it was o.k.? Read it again...I stated both teams showed poor sportsmanship. I only mentioned SMHS painted as well and FIRST, because I had not previously seen that posted. Neither team has showed the class I expected of them, and you are no different. I hope you aren't an adult who is setting a terrible example for their children....How do you know the paint was temporary? Did you do it? And, if it is so temporary, why is it still there? What continues to happen is just this, adults who don't seem to have anything better to do than to continue bickering back and forth over something that is supposed to be about the kids. I for one am done with the BS that has become this childish rivalry and will return my focus to being a lifelongfayetteresident, fayette county school alumni and yes, PROUD WHS parent!

Yea, your ten examples against one - right - all are equally guilty.

All I can say to you Whitewater parents like 'lifelongfayette' is to be sure you buy some tickets from Starr's Mill for the for state playoffs.

I am sure you have been there supporting them, right?

Priceless baby- Priceless.

I could NOT understand why a Starr's Mill fan would go on and on endlessly about Whitewater, when that game is history and Starr's Mill has been winning ever since. (Good for them!!) Well, enigma/marks my word is not really Starr's Mill, he's a bitter McIntosh fan. That makes so much more sense! 0-9 is a hard pill to swallow, so now I understand the bitterness.

Enigma, you're right about one thing. When one high school team is beating another soundly, say 30 points difference, it shows a lot of class to back off and take a knee, as you said. Or you could put in your second and third strings, and let them get some practice. Either way, no sense in rubbing the other kids' noses in the dirt.

I'm sorry if your nose got rubbed in the dirt this season. I'm also sorry for any bad sportsmanship that Whitewater showed, to you, or to any other teams. However, you must surely realize that not all Whitewater students, faculty, and staff are all the negative things you have been saying for the last few weeks. It's time to let it go and move on. Seriously.

Submitted by Proud2BWcat on Mon, 11/27/2006 - 3:37pm.

Well said, alanrc54.

It would appear that Enigma has other issues with this, that’s why he or she will not let go. That's sad, because there will never be any closure to this as long as people such as Enigma spout as they do.

There are many good people at WHS and many good things happening there, but this fact is overlooked because of the actions of a few strays.

Oh well!

So, you think this is "Well said": "Well, enigma/marks my word is not really Starr's Mill, he's a bitter McIntosh fan. That makes so much more sense! 0-9 is a hard pill to swallow, so now I understand the bitterness."

What's hard to swallow is having four years to prepare for one game - at home - and blowing it to 3rd seed from a weak region who calls you the worst sports they have ever played... it's, well, PRICELESS for those of us who have exposed you for the poor sports you are.

Case closed- Go Panthers, Go Tigers, Go Patriots, Go Chiefs!!!

You are a sick puppy and do not represent the Chief’s parents and kids I know.
