Steve Brown’s Picks: (74-26)

Starr's Mill (8-3) @ Baldwin (10-1)
The football gods were watching over Starr’s Mill last week. Ware County coughed-up the ball six times! Baldwin crushed Americus-Sumter 49-7 in their first round victory. Starr’s Mill has the offense back in force and they can throw points on the board. Baldwin had an impressive regular season with just one loss to a very good, undefeated Northside (Warner Robbins) team. BALDWIN has the home field advantage and is my pick.

Landmark (9-2) vs. Warren County (7-4)
Wow what a game against Social Circle last week! Both teams forgot to bring their defensive squads and the result was a score of 56-49. This second round game sounds like a game of Biblical proportions with Landmark Christian vs. the Screaming Devils of Warren County. Do not let Warren County’s record fool you as they played a much tougher schedule during the regular season. Statistically, this game ends up being dead even. Could Landmark, the unranked team that keeps on giving, have finally met its match? Yes, it’s WARREN COUNTY by 3.

Tech @ UGA
If Georgia had fallen on its sword against Auburn like it did against Kentucky and Vanderbilt, this would be an easy pick. Auburn was a victim of their own bad choices involving turnovers. Freshman Georgia QB Stafford is maturing in a hurry and the team is beginning to rally around him on offense. If Tech QB Reggie Ball and company can keep from turning the ball over, they should be able to register a win. But what the heck, I’ll take the GEORGIA BULLDOGS out of pure old school pride!

Notre Dame @ USC
Notre Dame always has a trick up their sleeve when it comes to big games like this one. But the old Notre Dame mystique will not be enough against No. 3 UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA (Reggie Bush who?).

Falcons vs. Saints
This is the battle of two teams in the midst of a downward spiral. The Saints had a soft schedule in the first half of the season and the second half is proving to be much more difficult. The Falcons, on the other hand, we supposed to be in the rollover mode for the last several weeks and have fallen apart. The biggest question now is will Coach Mora be shown the door at the end of the season if things do not improve? I think the battered and bruised Falcons will drop its fourth straight to the SAINTS.

Staff member’s picks
Mike Boylan (71-29) - Starr’s Mill, Warren County, UGA, Notre Dame, Saints

John Thompson (68-32) - Baldwin, Landmark, Tech, USC, Falcons

John Munford (68-32) - Baldwin, Landmark, Tech, USC, Saints

Magic 8 Ball (53-47) - Baldwin, Landmark, Tech, Notre Dame, Falcons

Starr's Mill High School has made it in to the "elite eight" with a win over #6 ranked Baldwin on the road.

This is the second top ten team in that last two weeks (Ware County #9) beaten by the Panthers on the road.

Next week the Panthers will travel to East Paulding to play the Raiders.

The winner of next week's game will play in the Georgia Dome for the right to play for the state championship.

Good luck and congratulations to the Starr's Mill Panthers.

Thanks for the support Brown, Thompson, and Munford.

Turnovers don't just happen; they're forced by tough defensive play, pressure on the passer, hard hitting and tight coverage. It also takes a strong offensive to capitalize on a turnover. Football Gods? Gimme a break.

If our beloved Chiefs make it this far someday - are you going to be just as happenstance toward them?

I think God is a little too busy to be worried about high school football - I think Starr's Mill should get a little credit.

Maybe our 'Citizen' newspaper will see fit to send a reporter to the game this time since Whitewater is finished for the year. Then we could see pictures of Fayette County winning something and actually know what happened without scouring the blogs. Maybe.

whatever. he has picked against SM to lose every week it seems like. Don't even think about jumping back on our bandwagon . You were a failure as Mayor and now you think you know anything about high school football. One question to the former mayor. Have you ever been to a SMHS football game. Thought not... The Citizen sports staff could have hired a monkey and given him a banana and he would know more about local high school sports than this fool.

I put something on this web site before the season started that we were looking for someone to join the picks - we were taking entries from anyone and then we would decide on who would get the non-paying gig. Steve was the only person who entered. He felt that him picking games would be interesting and would have people reading them and we didn't disagree. You may not like his picks but they definitely get read.

As for going to the Starr's Mill game this week, we have one sports person - me - and I am going to the game that is in the area. Last week, I was sick in bed with a fever and a nasty case of bronchitis and John Munford backed me up to get photos at Whitewater - a big deal because it was their first state playoff football game. If you are going to Milledgeville this week, send us pictures. We will put them in a gallery on the web and use them in the paper. I promise.

What kind of cheap paper are you working for or are you just lazy and don't want to make the 2 hr. drive to see SM/ Baldwin. Surely the powers that be can kick in a little gas money so you can cover the local HS team. Let the darn fairburn paper cover Landmark. Coverage for a single A game instead of a 4A game of statewide importance is unbelievable. Your competition at the other paper did no better. Now hopefully that SC is finished we can get someone to cover the Panthers instead of hoping one of the Coach's wives will take pictures and tell them what happened.
By the way, Steve Brown is still an idiot

Sorry you were sick - it's been going around. It's a crying shame that we only have one sports writer.

All of that aside, IF you can make it to the state playoffs whenever a Fayette team is involved, and I mean ANY Fayette team, it would be great press for the community and might help us feel a little better about all the success we read about from outside of the county considering the bad press we read about from within (re-districting, guns, drugs, vandals, thefts, arrests, etc.).

Maybe the 'powers that be' could give you a pay raise and a bigger expense account so you could actually make some of these trips?!

Fayette County is one of the most successful counties in ALL competitive areas be it debate or Vollyball. We have someone is state playoffs almost every year in every sport or competition.

Kudos for Munford picking up the ball and running with it - "the press god's must have been smiling down on him".

Last four games:

Won 45-7 Woodward
Won 31-7 Northgate
Won 42-14 Fayette County
Won 37-6 Ware County (Region Champions)

You need to forget the first half of the season when they were missing the two thousand yard rushers and had some other injuries.

I'll pick Starr's Mill by 14.
