Scruffy (remember him?) Had a bumper sticker that he gave me. It said "Don't hit Kids" in big letters and below in smaller letters
"Seriously, they have guns now."

For a time I used to see a bumper sticker that read:

"It's NEVER OK to hit your child."

I took it that this was to express the sentiment that spanking is, by definition, child abuse and occurs only in the event that the parent has failed at better disciplinary methods and is merely the adult's way of taking out their anger on the child.

My own view is that there are occasions when a spanking is PRECISELY what is called for. (I would reserve it only for occasions of willful defiance of parental authority--and only for children under the legal drinking age.)

Anyway, I thought about making my own bumper sticker that would likely upset such PC types:

"Sometimes it IS OK to hit your child."

What the boy with the gun is apparently missing is a dad who, long ago would have called him outside and administered more than a spanking for disrespecting his mother.

Spankings are a proven deterent for bad behavior.

We are seeing the results of a generation of kids that were never, or rarely spanked. Look at how they behave. Too many parents think it is illegal to spank their kids so they have given up disciplining them altogether. What is the future for kids who can't behave?

They are also loved more than most and the spankings have become extremely rare these days. They know the look that preceeds a whipping. Now they have a choice to either abide by the rules or have dad whoop em good. They choose wisely and have learned that the right was is indeed the best way.
