The Fayette County School System’s crackdown on illegal students is picking up steam as the system’s staff sorts through sworn attendance affidavits.

Assistant Superintendent Sam Sweat told the school board Monday night that more than 1,100 students are on affidavits and the system is almost through checking the authenticity of 275 high school students.

“We have three pending arrests so far,” he said.

Sweat added that 13 students withdrew in September and October, and after the high school students are checked, staff will begin checking the 275 middle school students attending school on affidavits.

Sweat added that he would be meeting with law enforcement officials this week and updating the different agencies on the progress of the school system in tracking down illegal students.

In September, Fayette District Attorney Scott Ballard announced that two people had been arrested for false swearing on an affidavit that they lived in the county and their children were eligible to attend Fayette County school. On Sept. 2 Michele Slay was arrested for the offense, and three days later her mother was arrested for false swearing. Both said they lived in Fayette County, but a school investigation determined the actual residence to be in Hampton.

If the suspects are guilty, they could face up to five years in prison, a fine and paying restitution of $855.12 to the school system for the time Michele’s three children were in the school system.
