Steve Brown's high school playoff picks and more

Steve Brown’s Picks:

Whitewater (7-3) vs. Brunswick (7-3)
How do you pick these games without some comparative data against common opponents? Brunswick lost three games against some strong South Georgia programs. Whitewater has been up and down, but they do have the home field advantage. Will Whitewater’s lack of post season play put them at a disadvantage? Brunswick’s defense has held the opposing offenses to seven points or less five times this year. Who is the hungriest team? I’ll take BRUNSWICK to vanquish by 3.

Starr's Mill (7-3) @ Ware County (8-2)
Here we go – tough pick! Ware County has only lost two games, both to football powerhouses. They held six of their opponents to seven points or less (four shutouts). Ware County also has the home field advantage which is huge in that stadium. However, the Starr’s Mill team of the last three weeks, a healthy team with a strong running attack, can go head-to-head with the likes of Ware County. In a game that could go either way, I’ll point to WARE COUNTY in front of a strong home crowd to edge Starr’s Mill in a real barn-burner.

Sandy Creek (7-3) @ Flowery Branch (9-1)
Do not let the name “Flowery” fool you. The Falcons from Flowery Branch are for real. They did not take any prisoners this season with margins of victory like 50-13, 42-0, 42-7, 49-3, 41-7, 35-6 and 28-7. The Falcons only loss was to North Hall by 3 points. On the other hand, Sandy Creek has three losses to very tough teams. Two of Sandy Creek’s losses came on the road. I’ll give the edge to FLOWERY BRANCH with home field advantage.

Landmark (8-2) vs. Social Circle (6-4)
Landmark Christian, the unranked team that keeps on giving, has been like a freight train running downhill. Both of these teams have better records playing away than at home! Landmark reminds me of the “Facing the Giants” movie (take the kids and go see it) this year. Assign this one to LANDMARK.

Ga. Tech vs. Duke
Tech’s game against NC State was just plain ugly! Thank God the defense was still working. The Yellow Jackets have done a good job of bouncing back after disappointing games this year. Award this one to GEORGIA TECH.

Ohio State vs. Michigan
This is the biggest game of the college football season. Is it the “Game of the Century” as advertised? These games tend to be blowouts. Great defense keeps you in games, and Ohio State has a great defensive squad. In fact, Ohio State’s defense has scored more points than any other defense this year. Michigan’s passing game is around 50 percent, and that will not be good enough. Bestow the victory upon OHIO STATE.

Falcons @ Ravens
Can anyone explain the Falcons? The Falcons coaches sure can’t. Losing to the Lions and the Browns is about as bad as it gets. All that being said, this is usually when the Falcons breakout into 600-yard offensive explosion and have everyone scratching their heads (kind of reminds you of UGA this year). The RAVENS have the stats and the wins to be designated as the victor.

Staff member picks: Mike Boylan (67-260 - Whitewater, Starr's Mill, Flowery Branch, Landmark, Tech, Michigan, Falcons

John Munford (64-29) - Whitewater, Starr's Mill, Sandy Creek, Landmark, Tech, Michigan, Ravens

John Thompson (62-31) - Whitewater, Starr's Mill, Flowery Branch, Landmark, Tech, Ohio State, Ravens

Magic Eight Ball (49-44) - Whitewater, Starr's Mill, Sandy Creek, Landmark, Tech, Ohio State, Falcons

To Mudcat (aka: Bob Lenox or Jim Stinson)

Please shut up and go away. Your persistent hatred of Steve Brown doesn't impress anyone. I have enjoyed reading his commentary on the games.

He got them all right but for the Starr's Mill game. I wish he had been wrong on the Whitewater game too. Oh well, there's always next year!

Good luck to Starr's Mill in the next round.

Why are you in the football section if you don't care?

Submitted by 1bighammer on Wed, 11/15/2006 - 12:09pm.

I shouldn't be shocked though... Everybody picks Starrs Mill, Everyone but Brown picks Whitewater. Only Munford and the Eight Ball pick Sandy Creek. You would think that a team with 5 straight post season appearances, a team that beat the MIGHTY Whitewater at home, and a team that appears to be CLICKING at the right time would get some love. Guess Not, after all we are talking about Sandy Creek!

Brunswick will give Whitewater all they can handle, probably too much.

Ware County in "The Swamp" is ALWAYS a tough task. Starrs Mill better bring their A+++ game.

Good luck to Whitewater and Starrs Mill.

Steve Brown didn't pick Starr's Mill 1Hammer - he's a nay-sayer.

Submitted by myword_mark on Wed, 11/15/2006 - 4:09pm.

I'm pulling for you guys man- It's going to take a huge game from everyone now- this is the playoffs baby!

Maybe those big lineman can get it done Friday night for you guys - as always - we wish those Patriots all the best!

Let's hope that Munford and the 8 ball are right regarding Sandy Creek!

Submitted by 1bighammer on Thu, 11/16/2006 - 11:51am.

pulling for Starr's Mill and even Whitewater (despite their arrogance and obvious disdain for every other school in the county).

Submitted by myword_mark on Tue, 11/14/2006 - 7:55pm.

Whitewater should kill Brunswick - Whitewater needs to get to the dome to make anyone think they are for real - Star's Mill smashed Brunswick last year 45-14. This year, Whitewater wins 21-10.

A healthy version of Starr's Mill could have beat anyone they played this year possibly even Creekside - The last three games they have been haelthy and have ROMPED! Panthers will beat Ware in an upset that really doesn't surprise us hometown folks. Starr's Mill with a big road win 17-6!

Sandy Creek has struggled some this year. Beating Whitewater shows just how tough AAA is. The Falcons are a bit too much this year and Sandy Creek calls it a season with a hard fought loss 24-13.

Other winners - Tech, Ohio State, Ravens.

Submitted by Proud2BWcat on Tue, 11/14/2006 - 9:35pm.

I agree with your assessments, however, as a football parent at WHS, I don't believe the Wildcats have to reach the dome to prove anything, this bunch of kids, no D1 superstars, no one going to the academies, just a bunch of kids that have been together for four years and love football have proven to us and the teams they have faced they are for real. This county is rich with football talent.

I wish Sandy Creek and SMH good luck on the road, they finished the season strong and should do well on Friday; I hope we all are victorious! All three teams have played very well and are deserving of the post-season berths.

The Ravens will demolish Vick this weekend, ouch!!! Why not Shaub at QB and Vick in the backfield? It can’t get any worse.

Submitted by myword_mark on Wed, 11/15/2006 - 2:16pm.

Many of us have said for years that Vick needs to be where Hines Ward is - in the slot. put him in a position to run in the open field (sfter teaching him how to carry a football).

Whitewater may not need to make the dome (which I think they should do) but they sure as heck better get past the first two rounds if they want anything near the bragging rights in this county - which I say because of things like this:

Whitewater has a new 'T' shirt saying that they are "The Kings of the County"....who comes up with this stuff over there? Do they know that Tyrone and Sandy Creek are in the county too? I guess since they didn't personally insult SCHS with the "Only real cat in town" they felt they needed to get them this way. At what cost my friends, at what cost?

All of that being said, good luck to all this weekend.

Submitted by 1bighammer on Wed, 11/15/2006 - 3:57pm.

Yeah Right! Did Stillons have them printed and handed out?

Another perfect example of the "We Are Better Than You" attitude exuded by members of that Community.

Submitted by Proud2BWcat on Wed, 11/15/2006 - 7:40pm.

As a parent at WHS, I’ll say that I can’t disagree with you guys! The slogans and T-shirts are the work of a very small but loud bunch; believe me, those of us that understand this do not discount the other schools because we know we are not there yet. If you knew how many times, I have turned down the slogan mania; and the majority of the parents here feel the same way. The silent majority is never heard! It’s funny, a lot of us felt that the county did not need another cat of any sort, but we did have any say so in this; it was left to those that spend their free time in the front office. And you which kinds I’m talking about, they are in every school!!!

Submitted by myword_mark on Wed, 11/15/2006 - 7:51pm.

The county has never seen this kind of behavior before and we are all quite puzzled. It's not like the other schools don't have a long and distinguished record of accomplishment in virtually every field. This has to start at the top with Greg Stillions and what goes around comes around.

I can assure you that Starr's Mill, McIntosh, Fayette County and Sandy Creek are not impressed, not intimidated and not happy with the unprovoked boasting and poor sportsmanship of the "Only Real Cat in Town" and "Kings of the County" crowd.

Dozens of region, state, and national titles (12 State Championships alone at Starr's Mill) are held by these other local schools and unless I am mistaken - Whitewater has yet to have a single title in anything - not even a region championship - I'm not trying to be ugly - I'm just saying that we don't get the "We are better than you" mentality....can you help us understand it?

Submitted by inthewoods on Wed, 11/15/2006 - 9:37pm.

This type of behavior has been going on in this county for decades!!!! Please when McIntosh opened in '84, FCHS trashed them every chance they got! Anyway they could! Give me a break! If you can't play get out of the sandbox!!

"You got told?" And you are a teacher in this county?

Here, add this to the abbreviated list for the last couple of weeks at Starr's Mill:

Volleyball second place finish in state.

Softball team for their 3rd place finish in the AAAA State Championships.

Varsity Competition Cheerleaders for winning the 2 AAAA Region Championship for the sixth straight time.

Still waiting for your list - Or, as you would say, "I be lookin".

Submitted by dollaradayandfound on Wed, 11/15/2006 - 8:30pm.

I have no kids in school now, but I am tired of reading all this stuff about t-shirts, which school to attend, and noisy students.
Do you not REALLY understand why they are "hell raising?" Or, do you, and want to be cute?
These non-standard happenings are as a direct result of the school leadership for not handling it from the get-go. They are afraid of the lawyers that may come and the fact that they may have to resign for actually doing their job. Ever watch a pro football game and see the same hippity-hop crap there? It is the same thing.
It all comes from feeling inferior as a heritage and getting a thrill out of disturbing those who try to stop them. We don't like what we are afraid of, and will condone that which we are not afraid.

Submitted by myword_mark on Wed, 11/15/2006 - 8:40pm.

I understand rudeness...yes. My question is: How can the only school in the county with NO titles at all think they are better than the schools that do have titles - and why would the administration and parents facilitate it?

Aside from this they have the lowest SAT scores.....maybe you get it Dollaraday but we don't and we condemn it.

I guess to put it in to your terms, we ARE trying to do OUR job as adults in the community.

By the way - I'm not cute.

Submitted by wildcat on Wed, 11/15/2006 - 8:58pm.

for some strange reason. You really take offense to what we do, how we act, and what we wear at WHS. You only seem to mention the things that we've not yet accomplished. That's really odd. I'll pull out my old DMS-IV and see if I can find out why. You put a lot of energy into knocking our school. Weird.

Did you peek in high school? Is that why you are so involved in high school sports, or do you actually have some reason for getting so defensive about a school that you didn't even attend?

The girls' locker room had a partition blocking the entrance. It did not go all the way to the ground, so that if you got low enough you could see in. A couple of buddies and I arranged a "fight" outside that allowed us to fall to the ground and have a look.

Didn't see much, though. And P.E. coach was wise to us and chased us off.

I would have thought the county tradition of good sportsmanship and success would have laid a better foundation for you and your school. We have failed you.

Do you think if you ever actually win a county, region or state championship your school will outgrow this inferiority complex?

Submitted by wildcat on Wed, 11/15/2006 - 8:47pm.

the majority of the student population (and numerous faculty and staff) is from the Brooks/Woolsey/unincorporated Fayette County area. How, exactly, was this area treated years ago when Starrs Mill opened. Oh, that's right...we were allowed to go for the 1st year and then PTC decided that they didn't want any of the "Brooks trash" in their school. Having children that opened and graduated from SMHS and children that will eventually graduate from WHS, I won't take offense to your comment regarding an inferiority complex. I will, however, write that a lot of us have waited a long time for a place of our own and we're very proud of our school and our principal (that everyone seems to be down on) and if we want to rub it in your face (so to speak, or would that be write?) why would you even care? How is it hurting you? I'd really like to know.

Submitted by myword_mark on Wed, 11/15/2006 - 9:01pm.

What is it that you think you have done that can be rubbed in our face??? Lowest SAT scores and no region championships.... ?

I fail to get the whole "rub it in your face" part....as for the inferiority complex - your own statement:

"How, exactly, was this area treated years ago when Starrs Mill opened. Oh, that's right...we were allowed to go for the 1st year and then PTC decided that they didn't want any of the "Brooks trash" in their school." explains the inferiority complex. the really troubling part is that you blame PTC for building a school for your area that is already overcrowded? Wow.

Maybe if you stop acting like you are on Jerry Springer redneck with your na-na T shirts, vandalism, weapons carrying students, low test scores and false arrogance you will be more readily accepted. Maybe.

Regardless, win something would ya? You guys are bringing the whole county reputation down.

wildcat is offended! Oh goodness.... Do you think your cute little tee shirt where you make fun of the other schools is offensive? Do you think your screen saver is offensive? Do you think your comments about all of PTC was offensive?

Let me tell you what's offensive. Your attitude and condescending remarks are offensive. Your "You got told." comment was offensive because you are supposed to be an educated woman who works for the county and the state. As a professional, shouldn't you at least use proper grammer?

Good!!! Obviously you don't have a life since you spend all day here on the blog!!!You seem to be the only one that can't take it! Who else is blogging from SMHS about all these supposedly bad sportmanship? Of course, at the state cheerleading competition, SMHS cheerleaders showed such great sportsmanship and booed the Whitewater cheerleaders while they performed. So much for your great leaders!!! But of course, there you are insulting students with disabilities that have nothing to do with this conversation. But I guess that is par for the course for your kind.

With regards to myword_mark's on-going comments, my only response is ... get over yourself. Everyone reading this blog sees what a pathetically shallow existence you lead and how you need to come to grips with the fact that you have no life except to verbally bash people you don’t even know. Your repetitive comments about the splendor of SMHS lead one to believe that you are a perfect example of a fanatic ... your narrow and limited mind can't be changed and you won’t change the subject. You certainly get overly excited about your own comments, regardless of how mundane and idiotic your responses sound. Do you quiver with overzealous joy when you discuss SMHS ... perhaps experiencing incontinent episodes because of your thrill? You probably retire to bed each night to hold a picture of SMHS in your one, unoccupied hand ... or perhaps your SMHS fixation is compensation for other "smaller" issues you "handle" each day. As a special education teacher, wildcat is at least trying to make the world a better place for some of society's less fortunate individuals. I applaud wildcat's WHS loyalty and dedication to the teaching profession and dismiss you for what you really are ... one who uses this forum to make up for other inadequacies in your own pathetic little life. I'm sure you’ll respond with another epistle about the "greatness" that is SMHS, but you'll be fooling no-one. You are truly a pompous, arrogant ass. Wildcat ... thank you for your dedication to your vocation and for making a difference in the lives of others.

Oh, you really hurt me that time. Ouch. Oh my, I am not sure I'll recover.

As an alumni from McIntosh in PTC, (you know, the ones who "wildcat" accused of "rejecting you" and your ilk and "forced you" back in to the woods of Brooks, "made you open another school", yada yada yada) I just think Starr's Mill is about the same as Sandy Creek, McIntosh and Fayette County - GREAT, WONDERFUL, FANTASTIC and REMARKABLE! Eye-wink

Now if you "only Real Cat in Town", "Kings of the County", "Priceless" little 'wildcats' will just pull your own weight academically and learn some humility .... we would all appreciate it. Sticking out tongue

I assume since you are making crass, odius and shallow personal attacks you too will not be able to back up your 'screensaver', 'Tee Shirt', 'Gym Wall' arrogance and braggadocio with any facts.

Does it hurt to be so piteous?
