Impact fee discussion tops Tyrone’s agenda

The Tyrone Town Council will hold a special workshop next week to discuss what to do with unused impact fees.

Last week, Town Manager Barry Amos revealed the town was looking at refunding nearly $64,000 in impact fees to developers because the town had not done anything significant in efforts to build a new town hall and police station.

When the town imposed impact fees in 1999, the new buildings were part of the impact fee program. According to the law, the town has to use the funds five years after imposing them, or face the prospect of refunding the money to the developers. The town collects approximately $32,000 a year towards funding a new town hall, so it would have to refund the 1999 and 2000 dollars collected.

“I imagine the discussion will center on what do we do now,” Amos said.

The workshop meeting starts at 6 p.m. at Town Hall, followed by the regular meeting.

In other news, Amos said the town is proceeding with plans to have its comprehensive plan finished by early 2007. The town learned the Department of Community Affairs has extended the deadline to 2013, but Amos said the town has a contract with consultant JJ&G to finish the work in 2007.

“We also haven’t had a significant update to it since 1992,” he added.

Dear Tyrone,

You're not Mayberry anymore. Get rid of Barry Amos and start acting like a progressive town.
