More pot seized in GrantvilleThu, 11/09/2006 - 4:42pm

Two drug seizures by Grantville Police in the past week netted 82 pounds of suspected marijuana with a street value of $164,000. A controlled-buy Oct. 31 led to the arrest of two men from Fairburn and Union City. The subsequent seizure of 58 pounds of suspected marijuana came after two other UPS deliveries were made but no one arrived to pick them up at the residences. The most recent seizures followed the Oct. 31 arrests of Caesar Hernandez Aguileria, 22, of Union City, and Armando Mendoza Carranza, 22, of Fairburn, according to Chief Franklin Allen. The men were charged with trafficking in marijuana and Aguileria was also charged with giving false information, Allen said. In that seizure police confiscated 25 pounds of suspected marijuana, he said. The latest seizures were made after Grantville Police, in conjunction with UPS, attempted a controlled-delivery bust by staking out two vacant residences after packages were delivered. The packages were confiscated after no one arrived at the houses to take possession of them, officials said. Allen said one of the packages contained 23 pounds of suspected marijuana while the other contained 35 pounds. In all, 82 pounds of suspected marijuana with a street value of $164,000 was seized. Allen said it is has not been determined if Aguileria and Carranza were to have been involved in the second series of deliveries. The incidents leading to the Oct. 31 arrests began when Grantville Police received information from a concerned citizen that a package had been dropped by a UPS delivery truck at a vacant house and later picked up by a Hispanic male, according to Allen. The UPS driver noted that a second package to be delivered the following day had the same Mission, Texas, shipping address as the package delivered earlier to the residence, said Allen. Working in conjunction with UPS, Grantville Police were notified Oct. 30 that a third package was scheduled for delivery. Following company policy on inspecting suspicious packages, UPS alerted police when the contents of the third package were found to contain a product and packaging consistent with a suspect substance, Allen said. Aguileria and Carranza were arrested Oct. 31 after they flagged down the UPS driver, produced appropriate identification and took possession of the package. The seizure netted 25 pounds of suspected marijuana, Allen said. Allen noted that Grantville might have been chosen for the deliveries due to its small size and rural setting. But in the end, he said, the perpetrators made a costly mistake. “They picked on the wrong town when they picked on Grantville,” Allen said. login to post comments |
