Fire official: No hazardous chemicals involved

Three railcars carrying plastic pellets derailed at a Peachtree City business Thursday morning, injuring one employee, according to the Peachtree City Fire Department.

No hazardous chemicals were released at the Noveon facility on Sierra Drive, but the department's hazardous materials unit responded to the scene to help contain the material, said Lt. Peki Prince.

The incident occurred when the employee was moving the three cars on a spur line at Noveon, a company that manufactures plastic items, Prince said. Fire officials alerted CSX railroad, which halted train traffic as a precaution briefly until the nearby portion of CSX track could be inspected; no problems were found, Prince noted.

The fire department had received a detailed tour of the Noveon facility about six weeks ago so officials were fully aware of what chemicals are being used there, Prince noted. The knowledge gained on that tour was helpful in responding to this incident, she added.

Wait, Sierra Drive is at the South end of Dividend Drive. That's nowhere near Centennial......?

I feel bad for the poor suckers who live in Centennial. That spur track is an accident waiting to happen and it's 50 feet from the houses.
