Fayette election results (all precincts counted)

37 of 38 precincts reporting (including absentees but excluding provisional ballots, which is the 38th precinct)

County Commission Post 4
Jack Smith (R) – 22368 (69%)
Rod Mack (D) – 10163 (31%)

Georgia House of Representatives District 72
Dan Lakly (R) – 11416 (71%)
Kevin Madden (D) – 4620 (29%)

3rd District, U.S. Congress
Lynn Westmoreland (R) – 22368 (69%)
Mike McGraw (D) – 10163 (31%)

Westmoreland wins another two-year term in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Lakly returns to the Georgia House, and accountant Jack Smith will take the oath of office on a remade county commission in January.

Thousands of Fayette County voters braved November rains and a long ballot today -- all of which added up to long lines of voters taking their turns at the touch-screen computers.

Voter turnout was 52.7 percent, a respectable number for a non-presidential election year. Casting ballots were 33,917 voters, out of 64,308 registered.

At least 3,000 early voter ballots were cast last week, a strong showing.

HBO-Hacking Democracy

This explains in no uncertain terms that, unless very carefully watched, if it CAN be done, it WILL be done. Well, they "DONE" it in rural GA while the rest of America Dems were having a party!

Foley, Taggert (Preacher), Abramoff, corporate crooks, bad war, on and on, but these ARE NOT the reasons for the republican defeat.
They stopped listening to the electorate and assumed they knew everything we needed. They listened to complete idiots like Limbaugh and Hannity way too much. These guys are entertainers, laughing all the way to the bank. People simply got fed up with it all, and enough who could stomach voting other than republican, did so---thank goodness. They must stop feeling like their outdated, old, crusty ideas are the only way for us. The so-called republican, conservative base is dead at about 30% of the vote.

This forum has a lot of noise and no votes. It was pretty pro-Steve Brown and he got demolished in a run-off. Westmoreland got the treatment and is stomping a mudhole into McGraw. Did anyone really think a Democrat was going to unseat a Republican here?

I guess what I am saying is that the loudest voices don't translate into votes on Election day.

You nailed it, " a lot of noise, and no votes".

Did you see the nation election results? Georgia is polarized and therefore ignorant. The rest of the job will be done in two years. Better get rid of such dudes as Limberger, Hanratty, O'Riley, Thomas, and that dead looking guy that took George Wills place, if you want to survive.

And just because we don't vote along national lines, doesn't mean we're "out of touch". I assume anybody who elected a Republican is "out of touch", that means in your mind, a tremendous amount of the Country is out of touch.

The Senate is going to be almost deadlocked, and the Dems will have a slight majority in the House, it's not like a landslide occurred. It's very traditional for the House/Senate to move in the opposite direction in the 2nd term of a 2 term president.

The Dems have already announced they will push for tax increases in areas. That's not my idea of progress, but we will press on.

"The Dems have already announced they will push for tax increases in areas."

I don't suppose you would care to back up your rhetoric with say, oh, facts? I'm not aware of a single Democrat who has announced anything of the sort.

that's what we've learned from the DEMS! They always say whatever they want...its time the GOP took a page from the Dems playbook.

Submitted by OldSchoolFootball on Wed, 11/08/2006 - 1:02pm.

This should actually be fun. It's time to play "Blame the Dems" the same way they played blame the Republicans for the last 12 years in congress. As you stated so brilliantly - fact are optional! By the way- Failure to make permanant a tax cut - is allowing a tax increase.

Also, when are you dems going to fix social security for crying out loud! And why don't you have Osama binLaden yet? You're killing old people and starving them - where is the free medical care and this national debt you guys have is killing the economy!

RUSH LIMBAUGH: 'I FEEL LIBERATED... I NO LONGER HAVE TO CARRY THE WATER FOR PEOPLE WHO DON'T DESERVE IT'

I would say even a Repbulicrat icon like Limbaugh is sick of the same old same old (no pun intended) - there is NO difference between the parties with one exception: Social issues - which shouldn't be political issues anyway - if you are a Republican, right?

I dream of the day when the common man can actually tell a difference between the two 'major' parties.

Doesn't happen often, but occasionally someone here says something really profound - today it was you. You said there is no real difference between the parties - except social issues and social issues should not be political issues. Is that ever true!

The social issues that candidates spend all kinds of time and energy explaining or tip toeing around are not part of what they get to deal with in Washington. Even supreme court nominees have to have a standard answer for abortion. Stupid. Who cares - let the churches legislate morality and get government out of it. Then they concentrate on spending our money even quicker than they do now.

Raise taxes came out of her mouth. Also said they wanted to raise the mininum wage, cut student loan rates (my Wife recently locked less than 5% on almost $30,000, not sure how much lower it can be). Talked about the first 100 hours.

Not sure why this surprises you, or you would call it rhetoric. They've blasted the Presidents tax cuts for years. JFK had it figured out, cut the taxes overall, it raises the revenue overall, and he was a Democrat. Don't get me wrong, I'm not hard core Republican, Bush vetoed zero spending bills, and only ONE bill overall in 6 years. Federal Funding of Stem Cell Research, I believe. They deserve this, in my opinion. They've been free spenders for sure, bridges to nowhere, etc. This thread started off about local elections, and has morphed into something else entirely.

I voted for as many Libertarians as I did Republicans.

I'm sorry, McDonoughDawg, I just don't believe you. Please don't take this personally.

If Speaker Pelosi spoke the words "raising taxes" as you claimed, it'd be BREAKING NEWS on Fox, the lead headline on Drudge and the subject of every talk show on cable TV.

I'm familiar with her 100-hours plan, and I don't see the major points (raising min wage, lowering student interest rates, removing those ill-advised oil company subsidies) as a "tax increase".

As an aside, how'd your wife get a 5% rate? My boy had to settle for 8% this fall.

Submitted by OldSchoolFootball on Wed, 11/08/2006 - 1:03pm.

It's simple basmati- smart people get 5%.

Okay, I figured it out.

Stafford (student) Loan rates are currently 6.8% for this school year

PLUS (Parent loans for students) Loan rates are 7.94% (all-time high due to fiscal mismanagement of one George W. Bush)

Consolidation loans for college graduates having more than one student loan range from 4.75% to 6.125%

Submitted by dollaradayandfound on Wed, 11/08/2006 - 5:45pm.

Well. soon now, we will get the student loan rates reduced, and make the oil companies pay for the difference to the banks.

Submitted by McDonoughDawg on Wed, 11/08/2006 - 12:05pm.

I'm not positive, there was a deadline this summer that she had to meet to get it. It was close, her being through with her degree, but she made it. Not sure of the dates. I do know rates were going up, they may be at 8 now, and if they are, I would like to see them lowered.

Re the tax increases, sorry you don't believe me, it certainly wasn't an "across the board increase", as you know, they like to target tax increases and decreases. Congress likes to have all the control they can. Not many will win elections talking tax increases, that's for sure.

I don't see how anybody could have thought it could be. Sonny ran strong, and may propel even more Republicans than ever into State office.

Submitted by dollaradayandfound on Wed, 11/08/2006 - 7:12am.

Georgia is one of the last polarized states that exist! The voters in general find it impossible to split their vote. It makes them sick. If we are ever going to get out of the debt mess, war, and health insurance problems we have, and the destruction of the middle class, we must vote for the person and not the stupid party. However, as to Perdue and Taylor--not much of a choice--sad for Georgia that they don't think they have a better candidate than those two. No one wants the dumb job!!!!

May indeed propel additional Republicans into office but it reiterates the fact that Georgia is increasingly out of touch with the rest of the country. I'd suggest the best way to resolve the flag debate is to just add "Ignorant and Proud of it" to the state flag.

Submitted by McDonoughDawg on Wed, 11/08/2006 - 9:43am.

It's that close. I've already heard Pelosi's ideas, and very few of them intrigue me. Actually, it's the best thing that could happen for the 2008 Election in my opinion.

I've said on here before, the less the Representatives do, the better off we are. She's already talking about raising taxes.

As to the name calling of Gergians, it's typical by many, and doesn't apply to most folks in the State, much less the Country.

I am a native Georgian. I can tell that you're not. While I respect your right to have your own opinion I don't respect your right to call people ignorant because they don't share your point of view. If thats truly how you feel, may I on behalf of native Georgians, invite you to return to YOUR native state ?

Can't tell much, can you? I imagine you're accustomed to being corrected so this shouldn't bother you too much; I am a native Georgian and life-long resident of Peachtree City. My point is that Georgia once again demonstrated how out of touch it is with the national trends, based on this election. I'm not calling Georgia voters ignorant because they don't share my opinion. I'm calling them ignorant based on the outcome of certain votes in this election as compared to the national trend. If that makes you upset as much as it apparently does, might I recommend a tissue?

Guess I'm not surpised by your response. It's as arrogrant as the first post. The only part of your first post that I objected to was calling others ignorant. I guess you think thats OK ? Even if this IS your native state I wouldn't stay if I felt the people around me were ignorant !

Why are we so complacent in this state?

bush gave his rich oil buddies 2 billion dollar free handout. That is more than any Democrat has spent on wefare. The only thing I hate more than giving my money to people who don't want to work, is to give my money to rich people.
