With little emotion, a Fayetteville girl calmly recalled in court Monday how her mother’s boyfriend had sex with her in the bedroom of her north Fayette home in March when she was 15 years old.

The victim, now 16 and a student at Fayette County High School, said Michael Northern came into her bedroom when she was taking a nap and had sex with her.

Northern, 47, through his attorney has denied the allegations. He is on trial this week for one count of statutory rape and one count of child molestation from the alleged March 1 incident. The trial continued Tuesday afternoon as the defense presented evidence in the case.

Northern’s attorney, Paul Liston, said Northern had gone into the victim’s bedroom, where she was taking a nap, merely to cover up her legs which were sticking out of her blanket.

The victim said Northern, who lived in the home with her and her mother, had sex with her before on other occasions, most often after she had gone to sleep for the evening, and the incidents made it difficult for her to sleep at night.

The victim recalled that she would just “lay there and close my eyes” when having intercourse with Northern.

When her mother walked in on her and Northern in her bedroom, the victim said she felt “relieved and ashamed at the same time.”

Liston asked the victim if she was forced to have sex with Northern.

“I did not want to do it,” she replied.

The victim’s mother said she came home that evening to check on her daughter, hoping she had gotten a ride to night school. Instead, she said she found Northern on top of her daughter on her daughter’s bed, with Northern clad only in a robe.

In his opening statement, Liston noted that police found no physical evidence pointing to his client on bedcovers, sheets and pillowcases that were examined by the crime lab. He said Northern was in a bathrobe because he had just taken a shower.

“He has not had sexual intercourse with that girl,” Liston said. “... All we have here is a hysterical girl and a hysterical mother.”

Thanks for not publishing the victim's name, or her mother's. But did you have to even identify her as far as being a student at Fayette County High or at the night school?
