At first it didn’t look like the Fayette County-McIntosh football last Friday would be any good because it appeared Fayette County (2-7, 1-6 region) would run away with it.
Quarterback Brandon Boykin started the scoring with a six yard run just under three minutes in to the game. He followed it up 30 seconds later with a 33 yard touchdown run after a fumble recovery. With just over five minutes remaining in the first quarter, Fayette County tailback Matt Daniels scored his first of five touchdowns and 41 seconds in to the second quarter Boykin scored his third touchdown to make it 27-0.

And then McIntosh (0-9, 0-7 region) woke up.

The Chiefs put together some good football, including what many could argue was the finest minute and fifteen seconds of football in school history, as they scored a touchdown on a pass from Nick Popeill to Qua Mack, had Carl Scheuman block a Fayette County punt on their next possession and then had Popeill score on a six yard carry. The Tiger lead was cut to 13 but not for long as Daniels ran 63 yards for a touchdown just under a minute later. Popeill answered once more for the Chiefs, close to a minute after Daniels touchdown, with a 37 yard touchdown run. With just over a minute remaining in the half, Daniels scored once more, this time on a 35 yard run, to give Fayette County a 20 point lead at the half.

The final score would be 61-35. Daniels, who needed 100 yards on Friday to break the 1,000 yard rushing mark, had 348 yards in the win. It was the most amount of points either team had scored this season. Fayette County (2-7, 1-6 region) will host Starr’s Mill on Friday, while McIntosh (0-7, 0-9) plays at Creekside, the region 2-AAAA champs.

In other region 2-AAAA games, Starr’s Mill (6-3, 4-3 region) helped their playoff hopes last Friday by handing Northgate a 31-7 loss. The Panthers got touchdowns from Dante Cheek, Greg Davis, Matt Sweat and Eric Pitts and a field goal from Jonathan Whitlow to account for all their points. They led 31-0 before Northgate found the endzone.

The win puts the Panthers at fourth place in the region standings behind Creekside, Whitewater and Woodward Academy. Starr’s Mill must win on Friday to make the playoffs and if they do, they will be on the road.

Whitewater (6-3, 5-2 region) has locked up a spot in the playoffs but will need a win over Northgate (5-4, 4-3 region) to assure themselves of a home game to open the postseason. The Wildcats lost to Woodward Academy 17-12 last Friday. Jordan Cooper connected on two field goals for Whitewater and quarterback Jay Bright found Cody Haralson for a touchdown pass but a two point conversion attempt failed and the Wildcats came up short.

In 6-AAA play, the Sandy Creek Patriots improved to 6-3 overall and 3-3 in the region with a 34-13 win over Cass last Friday. Jake Turing threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, while Bradley Bush added two touchdowns of his own in the win. Sandy Creek amassed a total of 320 yards and held Cass to 220, including just 50 on the ground. Bush and Rashad Hollis ran for most of the yards, with Bush gaining 80 and Hollis rushing for 78 on four carries. Turing threw for a total of 144 yards and Braxton Lane had four catches for 70 yards and a touchdown. Josh Houston caught the other touchdown pass.

Defensively, Zach Hilton had an interception, two pass defense and a fumble recovery as well as four total tackles. The leading tackler was Chris James with nine. Sandy Creek plays Cedartown, which has yet to win a game on Friday. The Patriots will make the state playoffs with a win.

The Landmark War Eagles clinched their fifth straight Region 5-A championship by defeating the the third ranked Eagles Landing Christian Academy Chargers 28-14 last Friday. Senior Matt Moody led the offense going 12 of 14 for 161 yards and two touchdowns along with 86 rushing yards and one touchdown. Jimmy Eden and Tanner Bryant had touchdown receptions while Walter Lenard led the War Eagles with six catches for 79 yards.

Defensively safety Blake Wyatt finished with 16 total tackles and one forced fumble. Sophomore safety Cole Abernathy tallied seven tackles one interception and one fumble recovery while freshman Josh Gebhardt finished with nine total tackles. Senior captain Trey Strickland dominated the defensive side of the ball with nine tackles, one sack, one forced fumble and one fumble rceovery for a touchdown return.
The War Eagles end their region and regular season this Friday night on the road against the Our Lady of Mercy Bobcats.

Our Lady of Mercy found themselves down 42-0 to Fellowship Christian at the half last week but came back to score 21 points in the fourth quarter to cut the lead in half. Christian Willis rushed for a touchdown, while William Pearl led the ground attack with 91 yards. Kendall Augustine caught an 18 yard touchdown pass for another score.

The final touchdown came when Chris Gair blocked a punt and recovered it for a touchdown. Gair had four total tackles and a sack. Will Simmons led the team with seven tackles and Brett Thomas added six.

If Northgate beats Whitewater then Starr's Mill (IF they win) will be second and Whitewater will not make the playoffs but Northgate will.

If both Whitewater and Starr's Mill win, Whitewater will be second and Starr's Mill will be fourth.

Creekside is first regardless.

It's confusing and tight -

having the worlds only high school with a golf cart parking lot and the 0-fer results of that football team? Why is it that we hear from Mainflame all day long when we're talking about MHS Volleyball and how much better their program is than WHS's but we get minimal input from him in this thread?

Let me save you some time and effort Flame, you're smart so I have to be stupid, blah blah blah...

I think the correlation is actually an inverse relationship between SAT scores and football team wins and a direct correlation between vollyball team wins and SAT.

There you go again showing the arrogance we all talk about.

What were WHS SAT scores again? Lowest in county? Oh yea, I forgot. And your football team still may not make the playoffs and didn't win region?

By the way, was it your daughter the clayton county boyz were coming to visit? Nice program you are running there buddy ;-0

If you had the ability to match wits with me, you'd leave my daughter out of it wouldn't you? And if by "we all" you mean "you" then so be it. You shouldn't lump yourself in with the rest of the MHS crowd, I’m sure it offends them.

The GHSA rules are clear on who can and cannot maintain athletic eligibility and every school has players and students from outside the designated service area of the school that still maintain eligibility under those guidelines. One set of rules that apply to the entire state.

If you knew anything about the AD at WHS, you'd know that all the players at WHS are fully eligible by GHSA by-laws or else they wouldn't play. I know the AD at MHS, we played soccer together as kids, and I know he'd rather not be associated your rants and fits of self promoting garbage and hypocrisy.

This would be much more fun if you were as smart as you think you are, as it is, you're ill informed and ill equipped to match wits with anyone. www.ghsa.net is where you should start.

Now who's full of excuses?

I believe that there are a couple of errors in this article. From what I've heard and read, if Whitewater should lose to Northgate and Starr's Mill and Westlake both win, then Starr's Mill would finish second and host a play-off game and Whitewater would be out of it.

Conn is correct.

You might be right.

I checked the GHSA web site for how playoffs are done and they have rules, if a region hasn't set up their own rules for determining playoff order.

If Whitewater loses to Northgate, they drop to 5-3 in the region and if Westlake and Starr's Mill win they are 5-3 in the region as well, as is Woodward Academy and Northgate.

And what makes it really confusing is that all of these teams will have region losses to 2 other teams with the same record.

Whitewater - Northgate and Woodward
Starr's Mill - Westlake and Whitewater
Northgate - Starr's Mill and Woodward
Westlake - Northgate and Whitewater

I apologize for missing that. I'll ask a coach or two what the region tie-breakers are to confirm it and I have to now assume that it would go to overall record. Assuming the scenario you mentioned, that would make it:
Creekside (10-0 or 9-1)
Starr's Mill (7-3)
Woodward (7-3)
Northgate (6-4)

Good catch. I'll be sure to include this scenario in Friday's preview.
