Did anyone go to the FCBOE meeting last night? What happened? When will they vote on the redistricting?

Thanks for any info.

Why does Bennet's Mill have to be full the first year it's open? Why mess with so many kids? I believe it would eventually fill up within a few years by upcoming elementary kids and would allow kids to finish in their current middle schools.

It's not going to be full its first year. It will be at about a third of its capacity. Not to "stir the pot" as mainframe likes to say, but there are three middle schools in the county that are over capacity. Obviously somebody has to move.

Keeping the school empty to allow kids to finish at their already overcrowded middle schools is going to cost a lot of money. I know, I know, money is evil, everyone's been talking about money as if it's turned our representatives into diabolical liars or something. But money contributes to the quality of a school. We all know it. Why do you think urban schools pale in comparison to suburban schools, generally speaking? It's the tax base. The day our FCBOE stops thinking about money is the day our school system becomes mediocre. I don't think anyone wants that.

They could vote as early as next week but that is not likely. I think the vote will be at the December regular meeting. The meeting last night was short with only 2 agenda items addressed: Class Size Waiver (Vote 5-0 in favor of filing) and Job Description change for Director of Technology (no vote - more info needed)

The Work Session after the meeting addressed two issues: Attendance zones for middle and high schools for 2007/2008 and funding of two proposed new elementary schools. The zoning discussion was carefully staged without input from the public. Basically CW Campbell and Sam Sweat tried in vein to answer loaded select questions from the emails and public meeting while softball questions were asked by the BOE to make them look good. The only exception to this poorly acted stage play was a few intelligent questions from Marion Key (Post 3). She was the only one there who appeared to be interested in doing the right thing for the families and children. The others were just trying to cover up the mistake of building Bennett's Mill Middle School in the wrong place at the wrong time. Elementary school discussion was more candid but not much better.

A few other notes of interest... CW Campbell seemed to think trying to be funny rather than serious with his comments was appropriate. No one was laughing, he WAS the joke. Also, Terri Smith (Post 2) giggled and talked down to the public most of the night. She also left the room several times during the discussions and kept reminding everyone that it was getting late. She came across as selfish, immature and ignorant. Greg Powers (Post 4) wants the committee to consider sending all of Crabapple Lane to Bennett's Mill. Lee Wright (Post 5) didn't speak much but did want the committee to consider changing only the Middle School boundaries and leaving all the High School in place. Janet Smola (Post 1) wants the committee to allow 8th graders the option of staying in their current middle school. Marion Key (Post 3) is the only member who didn't appear to have a preset agenda. She actually asked intelligent questions which the committee was unable to answer. My best guess is that she'll be the only "no" vote and that the rest have already made their "deal with the Devil".

Thanks for updating the rest of us. I hated to miss the work session last night, but I've been to enough BOE meetings to trust that your summary is right on, especially the part about the boundaries discussion being staged. And, based on the responses (or non-responses) I've received from the BOE, I, too, think that they'll vote to approve the map. Most of the questions I've posed to them have simply gone unanswered. Trying to get actual reasons for some of the proposed boundaries has been an exercise in futility. What a disappointment this group is. I wish they were all on the ballot today!

None of this will do anything about the racist administration at FRMS. What do we do, throw in the towel and leave because the BOE gives in to the blacks? Just today, there are a group of blacks at the school wearing "Negro League Baseball" shirts......even though students have complained that this is a racist double standard, they are still at school in class. But if you wear a "confederate flag" you are sent to detention! What's next? Are they going to be allowed to make the decision for everyone in the county on whatever issues they decide to pull out their race card on?
There's no hope in North Fayette county for our students! Anybody want to buy my house?? Cheap....

I don't get it. What does race has got to do with redistricting?
In my neighbourhood we got whites, blacks, browns and yellows, all rich, wealthy families, kids somewhat spoiled but nice overall, why the race slur? what do you want to imply here?

I support the BOE--- PTC and Tyrone and Fayette County will become more diverse every year, no bubble dreams anymore....the Mexicans are coming!!

Please write back in and advise if this is an organized effort to wear
the shirts or just a couple of kids have them on. If this is a group then they should be treated exactly how the Confederate flag wearers were and made to change as this is as disruptive as the other kids. WHY is a double standard allowed to exist at this school? You answered your own question-next year the middle school and high school will probably be surprised at the numbers moving out of this district. I personally know of numerous families either in the process or about to be. Thank you BOE for devaluing the houses in Tyrone by thousands by your decisions that make no sense.

You are right..I paid 240.00 plus for my house in 2000. A house like mine, and you would be surpized at the neighborhood, sold for 250.00 the other day. Ours, use to be a neighorhood that people cruised, waiting for a for sale sign. It is built around a lake and is swim/tennis. What a shame! The problem....is...the...schools....! Other areas in Fayette have gone thru the roof...A house in the Starrs Mill area, that I thought was overpriced in 2000....just sold for $130.00 plus more.... Mine is larger and nicer, and closer to main roads, that is why I chose it. With all that going for it, the prices in this area are hitting the bottem of the barrel....reason? the schools! Kids are being bussed from the NORTH CLAYTON... line...way past FCHS to come here. They are rough kids...period...! The people in this area are moving. The board acts like this problem isn't there. The reason for ...so many problems at that school is that you are trying to mix water n oil... This has been going on for years and the BOE just sticks it's head in the sand. It is awfull at these schools..prove me wrong...why else to they make the papers?

I thought I helped you pack all day and you were ready to leave? Give it up. It is a buyers market - not a sellers market. We all take a chance when we purchase our homes. Things are destined to change. We'll either make a killing or we won't. The economy sets the standard - not the school districting.

Give it up!

Submitted by head_ragg on Tue, 11/07/2006 - 8:47pm.

Honey...I wouldn't let you pack anything for me...you are soo sloowww...my shoes..would get there next year...as far anything else...I'm glad you know how to sign in...can you sign out? Don't mess with people who try to make a difference...it is better to have tried and given up on an area than to just look down your nose like you do....DA!

Submitted by head_ragg on Tue, 11/07/2006 - 7:42pm.

Maybe you can't read....look at what Gloria said, and I said...yes it is a buyers market...our places in Tyrone are fire sale! Why...? The schools...what planet did you come from? You...look at the market...everyone wants in a good school...and ours in Tyrone...AINT! But...not because of Tyrone residence! We are getting people bussed in are closer to FCHS....what do ...YOU...not undestand...? Can you not read? Have you ever owned/bought a house?

And bought in an area where the market value has increased drastically. Guess I was lucky.

all ours have gone to the dogs, except the ones that are closer to other schools, and rumored to be moved. Mine backs up to the schools, so for this neighborhood there is no hope..the prices bear this out. We were once thought of as elite...(not by me...I thought that was funny) but by others, like I said, people cruised looking for a for sale sign here cause it is pretty...I bought cause I got to buy 2 wooded lots with streams next to each other, just right for a little boy to go play in. No other reason, just a kid in mind.

I din't particularly buy for resale or schools but it was a consideration.

My only contention with you is you are always complaining about something. You remind me of the poem "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost. It's not about the wrong choices you have made. It is always someone elses fault. The police for your tail light, the FCBOE for the schools, etc. You seem to make a incorrect choice and procreate it by another bad choice.

I'm just sick and tired of your blah blah blah and whine whine whine.

I do want to wish you the best of luck with your new home and your new chosen school system.

"it is always someone elses fault" Ok...lets go there badboy ...I moved to Tyrone with an open mind...I was warned by a lot of people who cared for me, not to. I'm not the preppy type, but could be, by your standards...My kid is nice..and we don't want to climb any social ladders, to me, that is sad..I taught my child the same thing. We were gonna move after my kid left Birch...the stories about FRMS were horrible...someone in my neigborhood worked at the SCHS and said that they were gonna get Mann...he was strict...so I stayed n guinne pigged my kid...wrong..

By your own admission, you were warned not to move to Tyrone. Second of all, you know nothing of my standards. You just sound like a very angry person. Angry about way too many things.

Move, get settled, and chill. and a gain, good luck.

What have you done to try to help ...change..something? It is very hard...what have you done?

Submitted by head_ragg on Tue, 11/07/2006 - 8:28pm.

We stayed...we tried..but it is bad...What have you tried.? As far as Tyrone,,, I tried to help make a difference..I went door to door to help to ladies that won..why? Cause I felt most working people didn't have the time to be involved with the day to day and were getting lost in the shuffle...what have you done? I know I wore out at ...least one pair of shoes!

But I despise those that think they are owed something by the white race!! You know the one's I'm talking about! (Maybe your in that group?) Yes, there was a Negro baseball league and there was a confederate war. There might not have been a confederate baseball team, but the confederate war is just as much a part of our history, yours and mine, as any NEGRO baseball league. Why is it that if a white guy wears something pro white he's racist, but a black guy wears something pro black and he's not racist? Like I said, there is a double standard at this school!! The problems will remain at that school until everyone there is treating equally by the principle!

I think you actually may have some rcial hostility their parent. Regardless, can you say - "uniforms" - or at the very least - no 'T' shirts with printing - or - no logo shrts - how about this:

Button up shirts and pants that fit.

Is that too much to ask??

Submitted by dollaradayandfound on Tue, 11/07/2006 - 4:07pm.

There could be nothing wrong with wearing such shirts. But, if they are worn for the purpose of creating a disturbance instead of pride in the negro players, then it is wrong. I see Chipper Jones shirts all of the time, but I doubt it means anything to most. Put on a Klan shirt however and it is a problem. Parents need to evaluate this sort of thing and control what is correct.

For the record, I think it's silly.

But if a child can wear a shirt that promotes "pride in the negro players", why can't another child wear a shirt that promotes "pride is southern heritage"?

If you stayed to the end, Janet said it all. The "staff" was trying to bulldoze the board into decisions regarding the new elementary schools and the board was asking for something more concrete to go on (maps, figures, etc).

This is when Janet said, "We don't want to end up with a school in the wrong place with no students to go there. Like what's happened with Bennett's Mill. The population numbers don't look anything like what you presented when that school was proposed."

Bennett's Mill, wrong place, wrong time.

Submitted by thrownundertheb... on Wed, 11/08/2006 - 1:50pm.

That probably is the root of the problem, but what's done is done. They have to populate the school now. It's unfortunate that a couple of elected officials are taking the heat for poor decisions made my the administrative branch of the FCBOE. Does anyone know anything about the chain of command for the "staff" side? Are there any rules of accountability for these people, and to whom are they accountable? In all the complaining that has been going on by various neighborhoods, has anyone contacted the state?
