Referenda and constitutional amendments

Okay, the candidates I've long been sure of, but I'm still struggling with a couple of these referenda and amendments. Seems like so often they're written as to get an automatic "yes" vote. Can anyone out there better explain referendum D for me, which provides a homestead exemption to senior citizens w/ respect to ad valorum taxes? Also looking for thoughts on proposed constitutional amendment 1 (restriction on use of eminent domain). I saw an attorney on TV last night who said the amendment has been hurriedly written and contains loopholes that could be harmful to private property owners. What about the fishing amendment? Do we need a constitutional amendment for this?

The Homestead Exemption for those aged 65 and over is just another tax evasion proposal designed to do nothing more than pandering to a large, cohesive voting block. The reality is that it is only a further burden on working-age people who already have to work for their own retirement plus those who failed to adequately plan for their own retirements. The actual dollar amount saved by those over 65 by this proposal is inconsequentially small since it's nothing more than ad valorem on property.

The bucolic Hunting/Fishing referendum would basically curtail local municipalities abilities to regulate hunting and fishing codes locally. It's being sold as a "historical protection" for Georgia's traditional sporting pasttimes but that's little more than cute window-dressing which keeps local towns from responding to higher population densities by essentially restricting their latitude to govern gun hunting in city limits. Just another silly proposal routed in the same good ol' boy network that gave us the likes of Tom Murphy.

Due to backlash restrictions enacted locally and at the state level, the eminent domain amendment is just a reiteration of the philosophy opposing the taking of private land by the state in order to increase tax base- usually by turning it over to another private entity. Regardless of any loopholes- and I do not see any- local regulations are more stringent anyway.

Basically, the only referendum which merits any legitimate consideration is eminent domain. All the others are substanceless pandering to people who will either not benefit as alleged or already benefit from other private systems which offer more benefits than the state can.

Vote no on all but eminent domain.

for your helpful insight and thoughts. My inclination is, in general, to vote against changing the constitution, since most amendments and referenda are initiated and backed by special interest groups. I belong to one nonprofit group that is pushing for passage of the license plate amendment, surely in hopes of seeing some of that revenue. It's just that so many amendments and referenda are worded so that the voter reading them for the first time at the ballot box thinks, "Oh yeah, that sounds good," or "Oh yeah, those people deserve a tax advantage."

I just didn't vote on the Hunting and Fishing referendum. I read it several times and didn't understand what it was supposed to accomplish. So I skipped it. Maybe there should be 3 possible responses to these referendums. Yes, No, and what the he.. does this mean ?

The Hunting and Fishing referendum is going to be used to overthrow the prohibition against hunting deer with dogs which was passed last year in the General Assembly and will be used in the future to prohibit regulation of hunting by cities and counties. I'm voting against it. I believe deer should be hunted the traditional way in Georgia... with cars and trucks.

They're afraid the terrorist are going to get a hold of it. But you can "noodle" and "shock fish". Just don't crank the generator while your buddy is in there noodling. He might float to the top along with the rest of your catch.

I have always believed in the baiting with corn and spot light tradition.

Teaching your 9 year old son, or daughter,to blast a deer with 00 buckshot out a jeep window or from the cockpit, is great training. Also, hyping these kids up so that they shoot every bush that rustles while hunting also teaches responsibility. You want them to want to kill a deer, thay they won't eat, to brag about so bad that they will even steal one if they can get to it before the one who shot it does! Also, during season, one can just drive around until you find a deer that has been hit with a car or truck, stop and lash it to the hood, and then drive all through the county, stopping at every convenience store and service station for conversation. Even during non season time, you can freeze the carcass whole and do the same thing. It is a great sport--better than shooting lawyers as Cheney does.

Cheney got in trouble for two reasons.

First, he didn't have the proper stamp to hunt lawyers.

Second, he got his lawyer out of season. It's a common misconception that you can hunt lawyers like most other vermin.

Get of Cheney's back you bed-wetter! It was only a lawyer that got shot. Haven't you ever been to a rat killing?

I voted for some of the window dressing. But you're right. If we give Government the right to take our property to divvy up as they see fit, the Communists have won, after all. Just Say No to Emminent Domain!

That's the way I go about it myself. But you are correct on one aspect, they word the amendments in some crazy ways.
